FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q: Do you know anyone who was affected by a wildfire in the past year?

Luckily, no. One of the authors Iím currently working with lives just outside San Diego, and he almost lost his home, but not quite.

Q: What hobby have you always wanted to take up?

Playing the piano, which I plan to learn starting in 2004.

Q: What's your favorite thing about your country?

That our destiny is not given to us by any government.

Q: What one object in your home or apartment are you most embarrassed about owning?

Itís so embarrassing that I canít even say!

Q1: No.

Q2: Playing the guitar. Writing an interactive fiction game like Zork. Taking photographs regularly. Attending pottery classes. There are a lot of hobbies I would like to take up but I simply don't have the time.

Q3: Being able to do what I want. (In principle.)

Q4: As a student with only a limited amount of space to work with, I've become pretty utilitarian so I don't think I'm embarrassed about anything I own.

1. My sister-in-law in Poway, CA has been on the alert and ready to evacuate a couple times in the last week. They are going stir crazy because they have basically stayed in the house due to the fires and the air quality, but they are safe.
2. Painting - oil or acrylics. I used to paint many years ago and I miss it.
3. The variety that is offered. There are people from all over the world, with different cultures, religions and ideas. Also the variety of scenery. We have the Grand Canyon, a variety of mountains, deserts, plains, rivers, waterfalls, you name it. As a child we would go to a different area of the country. I have walked the Black Hills and under the Niagra Falls. The variety of things and people to see are endless.
4. An animal trap. It is not mine and I hate it. My husband hates the wild cats that stalk this area. All we catch are raccoons and he just moves them out to the country. It is now in our garage. I put my foot down.

1. Yes personally and professionally.

2. Playing the bass...I'm really slacking on my practice.

3. I love the feeling it gives me. Knowing that I live in the United States of America truly provides an emotional high. I know that we have our problems, but I love our potential. I get VERY riled up about non-voters, because - to me - they are the cause of our problems. Those who choose not to act/vote are the ones that have caused our country to begin its sad deterioration. We've come a long way from our horrific beginnings, but we have a VERY long way to go. Still...I love the US, as unconditionally as I love a parent.

4. That strap on...oops. I'm not really sure about this one.

1. No.
2. Skydiving
3. Freedom of speech & thought.
4. Well, I don't own him, but I'd say my brother. He's overworn his welcome to stay after he and his girlfriend broke up. God, when will he ever get out???!!!!???

1. Yes-- an author I work with. He lives outside San Diego and an entire block burned down two streets away from him.

2. Knitting. Actually, I started knitting last year. Finished several scarves, mittens, and an entire sweater and then stopped. Now I've lost the knack. I want to pick it back up this Winter.

3. Diversity of the landscape and the American tradition of fighting for what you believe in.

4. Argh. My roommate technically owns this, but it's in our rec room/basement, so I have to live with it-- a black ceramic panther that her mother gave her. Fortunately she turned down the velveteen panther wall-hanging that went with it.

1) No, but my cousin burned his house down. He was frying fish and the grease ignited. About a $300K disaster just because he turned his head away for a minute to watch the kids playing in the yard.

2) Woodworking. In my dreams I have a large shop, equipped with state of the art tools that would turn Bob Vila as green as Kermit with envy. I'd routinely turn out masterfully crafted, personally customized hardwood furniture for friends and family. All gratis, of course. In reality, I bought a new SkillSaw at WalMart last week, on sale. . .

3) Liberty, tolerance of ideas, and the undying optimism that is part of America's heritage. That's all I can say without sounding suspiciously myopic.

4)Hmmm. Nothing too embarassing that comes to mind. Oh, I may or may not have, shall we say, certain items purchased at "head" shops over the years, which might bring up some uncomfortable questions if asked by say, my mother in law. Questions like "What's a Zigzag?"

During All Souls' Day the veil between this life and the next is supposed to be so thin as to allow the dead to visit the living. So, I have my own question here: is the Asta Shinsky with the vibrator the ghost of the Asta Shinsky with no regrets who died in 1928, or a younger and still living relative?

Meanwhile,
1 - No.

2 - Flying an airplane.

3 - The lack of bombs falling or armies invading/raping/pillaging on a daily basis, the lack of rampant disease with no health care, the lack of routine and violent human rights violations, the lack of "Survivor" living conditions for broader swaths of our society than most others, and the general sense of entitlement that this general safety (relative to the majority of the world) is the way life should be. I'm not proud to be an American, I'm lucky.

4 - Depends on who is visiting; but then, wouldn't answering this honestly go against the spirit of the quote of the week? And why hasn't Mr. Blogger answered this? Eh?
