FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q: Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day--a national holiday here in the US and a day off from work for some. On days such as these, do you commemorate the day by doing anything related to the purpose for the holiday, or is it simply just a day off from work where you're concerned?

Q: Earlier this week, President Bush announced that he would ask Congress for $12 billion over the next five years for research and development costs related to returning humans to the Moon and using it as a stepping stone for future exploration of the universe. How do you feel about this?

Q: What one question would you like to see on next week's Four For Friday?

Q: If you could be a cereal box cartoon character for a day, what character would you be, and why?

1. Honestly, I tend not to be terribly commemorative on national holidays, and in a sense, I suppose it actually does bother me that Iím so lackadaisical about it. In an ideal world, and maybe someday starting soon, on MLK day Iíd do something to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change that Martin Luther King aspoused and promoted; on Presidentís day I'd take the time to read up on leadership and to learn about our past Presidents; on Memorial Day Iíd consciously do things to honor and recall the sacrifices made by others so that I may live in this free society of ours; on Flag Day I would be sure to display the American flag, proudly; on Independence Day Iíd be sure to read and to contemplate the Declaration of Independence; on Labor Day Iíd be sure NOT to go into work; and on Veteranís Day Iíd be sure to reflect on all who have served in our armed forces and succumbed to the tragedies of the war.

2. Iím all for it. The human race's time on Earth is slowly but surely someday going to come to an end, and something bold needs to be done now to prepare for our future existence. My only concern surrounding the whole thing is the amount of money being proposed. $12 billion is not nearly enough to make the sort of advances necessary to evolve into space and beyond. $87 billionóthe same amount weíre spending in Iraqósounds more like it to me!

3. See every question on all previous Fridays.

4. Iíd be the Dig'Em Frog from Sugar Smacks / Honey Smacks. Aside from the fact Iíd stand a better chance of being kissed by a pretty girl and turning into a prince, Iíd get to greet everyone with a high-five slap, wear that really cool base ball cap, sport some floppy Converse Chuck Taylorís on my feet, and carry around that dripping wet honey stirrer all day long (dripping honey; way too much fun!).

1. For the most part I have to be honest and say no. I have always been opposed to Martin Luther King holiday for the main reason that it goes against everything I felt he stood for. Very few people "celebrate" the holiday. Most, and this includes the school kids, can be seen hanging at the mall or at the movies. I am sure he never intended for kids to be set "free" from school to do nothing. I have never understood Labor Day. Memorial Day and Flag Day offer lots of thought provoking ideas. A good holiday should be practiced year round.
2. I have always wondered where we would go when we ran out of room here. Space has always been a fascination and I believe there is a lot to learn out there, so I support his effort. Dollars? I have to admit that the number of dollars they are talking for most everything today is more than I can conceive...wonder if Bill Gates would chip in?
3.Having just finished "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," I would like to see this question: "If when you died you had an opportunity to wait for 5 people to greet into heaven, who would they be?" Sorry it's so weak, but it was on my mind.
4. The Toucan - I think he is on Fruit Loops. The only reason I could think of was so I could fly. I have always wanted to fly and have tried in many of my dreams. But I just look like a silly person leaping into the air. I'm sure that means something weird.

1. Our church usually commemorates MLK Day with something special. In the past, I've done community clean-ups, prayer breakfasts, and a host of other things to commemorate. I normally do NOT work on MLK Day and do not require my employees to work on that day.
2. I think Bush needs to fully fund existing programs before he commits additional funds to space exploration. His proposals are not revenue neutral - they require an additional $200 million per year. That money is probably better spent on block grants to states, fully funding "No Child Left Behind," or re-funding Head Start programs.
3. I suggested one of the questions last week, so I'll take a pass this week. Oh wait - choose the order of the Democratic NH primary.
4. The Lucky Charms leprechaun. Irish AND magic. Wow!

1. Sorry, I'm not off on any holiday except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and some random weeks in the summer. If I'm lucky, I'll go to the museum to see their tribute if I'm not stuck too long at the lab.

2. More space research? I am all cool with that. My problem with the plan are the time and financial expectations. Nobody in the administration is a scientist, are they?

3. I don't know; I'm sure you'll figure out a good one.

4. Tony the tiger from the Frosted Flakes cereal. I'd be buff and tough and say "Grrrreat!" all the time, not to mention having the ability to actually bite anyone's head off if they annoyed me.

1. I typically attend the MLK, Jr. rally at the courthouse in Boulder.

2. I think this is absurd. We are already messing up one planet, I don't think we have to start plotting ways to ruin other galaxies far, far, away. Besides, don't we still have people dying from AIDS, starving and sleeping on the streets in our own country. Are we still the richest nation that will not provide universal health care for our own citizens. We need to be exploring space like we need a rash.

3. Do fat puppies really hate fast cars?

4. Count Chocula, I think chicks dig that Goth thing he's got going on.

1. I like to hear his big hit speech at least once that day... it really gets to me. It has not been that long, at all, since discriminatory laws existed. I don't do anything though... just listen to the speech. Houston is a very integrated city... race relations were an issue in my childhood neighborhood so that probably taints my view here.

2. Forget the moon. We have been there. Heck the robot on Mars is probably doing way better than an human astronaut (is that spelled correctly?) could and Mars is waaaaaay farther away. 239,000 miles for the moon and 46,500,000 (on a good day) for Mars. I think for space we need to be designing and researching spacecraft to take us out of our solar system. Since Bush has no idea just how close or far the moon is from earth, he and his cabinet have no idea why they came up with this further exploration of the moon. It is laughable to me and a waste... probably can be tied to Lockheed Martin's (sp?) contributions to W.

3. Agree with Lee.

4. Uhhh... did Speed Racer ever have a cereal?

1. I won't do anything special but I will explain(again) why the USA is celebrating this holiday to my boys. Personally I think there should be ONE holiday celebrating ALL great American's. My children are NOT off school for Presidents Day... only MLK Day. My 2nd Son is thinking MLK is a Better American than others... I don't thinks so! Humpf!

2. It's great and I am awed. In reality it may cost a bunch, but it is THE only way to protect our country. Orbiting spacecraft can do amazing things.

3. What is the one luxury item you can't live without and therefore limiting a necessity like a car/stove/ ect...

4. "Tony the Tiger" on Frosted Flakes. He is always positive, STRONG and wears a smile.... and GRRRrrrrreat! A definite positive image.

we all in the world should celebrate this day because who would you be if he were not born, where would you be if he were not born, would you have the same friends? See he made the perfect changes in our life. Now if he was never born. We most likely wouldn’t be in the most best place for us now at this time. So thank this holiday and if you could just use all of your respect to the citizens around you.
