FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q: Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. What do you think about the Beatles... as amazing and groundbreaking as everyone says or overrated?

Q: CBS, which aired Janet Jackson's 'peek-a-boob' stunt during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, has instituted a tape-delay to cut potentially inappropriate footage from next Sunday's Grammy Awards show. Overreaction or a necessary move?

Q: If given the opportunity to spend 48 uninterrupted hours with a special someone, where would you choose to spend it... in a first-class cabin on the finest cruise ship in the world; your first college dormitory room; a penthouse suite in a mid-town Manhattan hotel; a tree house in the middle of the forest; your current house; in a Swiss Chalet; or somewhere else?

Q: If you had a band, what would you name it?

1. While Iíve never been a Beatles fan (I like maybe three of their songs), I do acknowledge their impact on our society. How many bands would never have been formed had the Beatles never emerged? Lots, Iím sure. All of that having been said, I do feel that they're a bit overrated.

2. I actually thought that this was the sort of thing that was already done. That itís just being instituted now is surprising. But I digress. I do feel that itís an overreaction to what happened during the Super Bowl, but because of the sheer unpredictability of shows like the Grammyís, I can see where itís somewhat necessary. At the end of the day, shows like the Grammyís exist to generate publicity for the awardees and profit for the sponsoring organization. That they want to control the environment is perfectly within their right. After all, the show is free to watch on television, so itís not like Iím paying for it and therefore can demand that it be produced one way over another.

3. Iíd take the tricked-out tree house. Not only would we be able to sleep under the stars and listen to the crickets, but weíd also get to explore the forest by day and roast marshmallows by night.

4. ìThe David Credit Band.î David was this kid in my high school, and he just looked like he belonged in a band. I always said that if I ever started a band, Iíd name it The David Credit Band. I just think the name has a cool sound to it.

1. Difficult question. Unless you are old enough to remember the "Beatles-craze," it would be hard to judge whether they are overrated or not, what do we really have to compare it to? Nellie, Brittany, J-Timberlake? How would our parents rate these artists if asked? :-)
2. Necessary move for primetime. I watched the halftime show with two already overly curious, and body conscious 8 year old little girls. It was bad enough trying to hide their eyes from the bumping and grinding from nearly EVERY performer in the show, but trying to explain away why a man ripped off a womanís top to expose her naked boob (and, that it was okay, because they were just joking) was soo not cool. Especially when they are at the age where I am trying to teach them that it is never alright for anyone to touch them like that ever.
3. Definitely a tree house! Days spent hiking and exploring in the woods, nights spent snuggled up with someone I love under the stars. Fresh air, privacy, peace, what a lovely dream. It would have to have electricity and a hot tub though, and lots of hot chocolate and marshmallows for cold nights.
4. This would be a big fat N/A for me. I have many talents, but unfortunately music has never been one of them. Ask anyone whose ever heard me sing in the car. No bands here!

1. Beatles...hmmm. Mikal, I think that, when KBCO would drone on about the virtues of the Beatles, I used to turn my chair around and start a 5 minute rant on how they ruined their own songs and how much I thought they sucked. Right? Well, I still think that they do something in nearly every one of their songs that ends up ruining the song for me. On the other hand, they were incredibly influential and they certainly pushed pop music to another plain. Of course, I think they stole a ton of ideas and just had the publicity, and the skin tone, to bring it to the masses.

2. I don't watch award shows. I think it's silly that they have to censor the show. However, I understand their 'corporate responsibility' and respect their choice. It's unfortunate that nobody will hear Bono eloquently drop the 'F' bomb.

3. I'd spend the time sailing in the Carribbean on a beatiful, sleek yawl or in the penthouse suite. If I got to stay in the penthouse suite, then I'd also have to be given the wardrobe to do the place justice...can that be part of the deal?

4. Monkeyhouse. A nod to Kurt Vonnegut, Jr's "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse." I know that other bands have stolen his titles, Deadeye Dick, but that book, a series of short stories, was highly influential in high school. It also reflects my current workplace. The people on my team make our area a total monkeyhouse.

1. I like some of the Beatles' songs, but I don't think they're genius--so of course it's overrated.

2. I think it's an overreaction (seems like every year people are trying to act more puritanical) but in the end, I don't really care. I don't watch TV. At all.

3. If it's uninterrupted, I don't think it'll matter what the location is.

4. The Alpha Toxins.

1) There was a time when I was in high school or college when I loved the Beatles. There was this series on TV in the '90s...forget what it was called, but I watched it and then wanted to go out and buy every Beatles album. And then they debut a song called "Free as a Bird" or something like that. I also like John Lennon and have his IMAGINE album (yes, an actual record album). I think they had a huge influence on music in the last 30 years, but don't think they're musical gods or anything.

2) I don't care what CBS does. I didn't watch the Grammy Awards. Most of the artists nominated are not any whose music I would buy anyway.

3) Definitely would go with the tree house. When I was a kid, I always wanted to have one, but we didn't have a tree big enough for one. I always like being outside (especially in summer). Get to commune with nature and sit around a campfire (on the ground) and tell stories.

4) I think it would be so cool to be in a rock band.

1 - Whatever you think of their music, you have to agree with Tom Robbins: they have provided the most succinct personality test ever. Just ask a person which Beatle they most identify with and you will know all that you need to know about them.

2 - It was a right-wing conspiracy to distract us from the continuing absence of WMDs in Iraq.

3 - 48-hours with another person? Please let there be a gun involved...o.k., we don't have to be so dramatic, we can settle for ear plugs.

4 - "The Flaming Bras"
