LOW CARB STUPIDITY
About the only thing that makes me want to vomit more than Hillary Clinton's political rhetoric--as demonstrated by her unauthentic remarks at last night's Democratic National Convention--is the extent to which the low carb craze has permeated itself in our society. Tell me, does anyone really need this piece of crap:

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last two years, it's probably as obvious to you as it is to me that there's an idiotic epidemic of low-carb stupidity running rampant thru this great country of ours, and fast food chains, food and supplement manufacturers, and weight loss programs are doing anything and everything they possibly can to capitalize on it in any way they can. From everything I've read or experienced myself, we human beings need carbs to burn fat. Today's low carb diets reduce carbs to a level that is below what you need for the metabolism of normal levels of fat; and what's worse is that programs like Atkins then tell us that it's okay to pump up the fat in our diets to super high levels. Give Me A Break! If you're into this low carb stuff, that's your choice; but if you take it to the point where you're buying the Low Carb Vegetable Peeler, weight loss isn't your biggest challenge.
Dropping pounds ultimately comes down to burning more calories than you consume, and products like the low-carb vegetable peeler do absolutely nothing--NOTHING I TELL YA--to provide any benefit whatsoever to anyone other than the retailers who are selling it and the greedy sons-of-bitches who are manufacturing it.

Looks just like my high carb potato peeler. Wonder if people really fall for this?
Maybe some day we'll look back affectionately on the low-carb craze and compare it to the "Pet Rock" phenomenon??
My current "favorite" low carb item is the new cola C2. Only half the carbs as regular coke. Good grief.. just drink a diet coke!! :-)
Supergirl, my sentiments exactly on the Diet Coke! (I was about to post the same thing, but you beat ne to it.)
The whole No-Carb thing has gotten out of control. People just need to eat in moderation. It seems like these fad diets tend to promote the "all-or-nothing" solution to weight loss. But, low carb foods are helpful to those who are diabetic. (That vegetable peeler is hysterical. Like, if you use it, your food will have less carbs? Give me a break)!
So true about the low-carb Cokes! I was just thinking that. To each his or her own, but I work out with a trainer who has a degree in nutrition. He will not put anyone on a low-carb diet, and if someone is insistent, he sends them to another trainer. They are effective for short term and fast weight-loss, but the long term effects have been proven to be harmful. The body needs carbs.
Also, weren't some of these diets intended for very heavy surgical patients who had to drop off several pounds quickly so that the doctors would have less fat to cut through? The diets were not meant to be a way of life, just a crash.
Yes Bluestocking you are right - it is used when people needed to lose weight quickly for surgery...

Mikal is right "Dropping pounds ultimately comes down to burning more calories than you consume". Once I started keeping a food journal to compare the amount of calories I consumed, I started losing weight... even with carbs in my diet!
The thing I hate most is when people ask me which diet I did to loose weight....atkins, south-beach, etc. Fad diets don't work!
I have to respectively disagree here.
First of all the item you are showing is from a brand name called "low carb chef" it isn't implying that the veggie peeler is only for special low carb veggies.
Second how can anyone with a straight face say that counting carbs is ANY more out of control than counting calories.
Restaurants and convenience foods have been catering to that crowd for decades.
The fact is that counting anything to stay thin isn't the best way to do it... so the carb "craze" is no more ridiculous than Weight watchers, or good old fashioned calorie counting.
Also...
Humans need carbs.. but not the invented kinds.
GOOD carbs are available in vegetables, cheeses, nuts, fruits. All sorts of wonderful foods.
People who are educated enough on the low carb routines to inelegantly debate them know that the low carb diets generally allow for these and tell people to avoid pastas and breads and processed sugars.
Those are all "invented food" (the don't grow or graze anywhere) and the human body DOES NOT need them.
People survived for many many years without them.
In fact:
People who follow a GOOD regimented restricted carb PROGRAM (not just give up all carbs because that's what they've HEARD it was about) are doing nothing differently than what doctors have advised people with insulin/ sugar issues to do for a very long time. It's even been the PRESCRIBED diet for people considered to be at risk of such things long before Attkins or south beach made them "popular"
I'll respectfully disagree. We are mincing words here. Low carb and diabetic insulin tolerant diets are not the same at all. The Zone advocates eating large quantities of bacon and pork products, nothing healthy about that. Low calorie diets do not advocate eating processed carbs or foods of any sort. If you look at glucose-tolerant diets pr hypoglycemic, there is still about 40-50% carbs, just "good" carbs, not Twizzlers and Twinkies, but whoel-grain breads, wheat pasta, fresh fruits and veggies.

Yes that's exactly my point.
You said:

They are in fact very similar.
I have family members on sever diabetic diets and the only real difference is the first two weeks of a "low carb diet" is very severe.
Incidentally... the uninformed usually site this admittedly severe first two weeks as why these diets are wrong. Attkins himself was careful to point out that his two week "jump start" phase was not something one wanted to do for long. Most people don't read the book before they start bashing it though.
You said:

The Zone doesn't advocate eating large quantities of anything.
The Zone is all about taking in a certain percentage of each type of food.
It isn't even a low carb diet.
You said:

That's right they advocate curtailing your eating so that your body goes into some degree of starvation mode.
That causes your metabolism to slow and in the long run won't work either.
The only way to get into shape without subscribing to some form of "plan" is to eat in moderation and exercises.
Period.
The point of my comment was that there's nothing more "out of control" about the low carb diet than any other.
Unless of course you count the many people who will debase it without understanding it and talking to their doctor about it as out of control.
In that case I would agree with you.
Wow! I thought only religion and politics could get this type of response!
I agree with Doug (and Cindra!!
Arggh! Another comment system that doesn't like my left handed smilies and cuts off my comment when I make one! Let's see if I can remember my rant. No one has mentioned that the old food triangle has been debunked and that a healthier diet should include LESS CARBS than was prescribed by the triangle. It was meant to help sell our farmers products which were mainly GRAINS. I think Atkins takes it way too far, and is unhealthy because of all the fats, but others, like South Beach, advocate a healthier diet, not just less carbs. And as far as the vegetable peeler, most vegetables are healthier for you if they are NOT peeled anyway, potatoes in particular. You lose a lot of vitamins and nutrients when you peels them, just mix them into the mash. My kids have never had them any other way and they love them!
Just saw low-carb cookies, candy, and liquor. Does that just seem ironic, or what?
i have been on a lower carb way of life and have kept off over 50 extra lbs i had on me, i did follow the
Atkins LC but without all the fat etc,
lots of people out there do low carb and arent extemists as mentioned, my doctor fully supports me and my weight loss and the fact i have lowered my chances of getting diabetes which runs in the family
people need to be tolerant of other peoples choices, its amazing how some can judge others and it doesnt even affect them,
