FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1: When shopping for food or related sundries, how important are brands in your decision-making process? For instance, let's say you're standing in the cereal isle at your local supermarket, and right there in front of you are two of essentially the same item, but one carries a brand name or label you're familiar with, while the other is labeled with the name of the supermarket? All things being equal except price, which box of cereal do you purchase?

Q2: If you wore eyeglasses, based on what you know today about the procedure, would you choose to have elective laser surgery to correct a common eye disorder such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or an astigmatism (distorted vision)? Do you know anyone who has had this sort of surgery, and if so, what have they said about the experience and/or the results?

Q3: What do you do when you're given the wrong amount of change when purchasing something with cash? Does your reaction differ depending on which side of the equation you land, i.e., receiving too much change verses not enough?

Q4: Do you have confidence in the airport screening procedures in place in the United States?

Q1: when it comes to cereal i'd choose the brand that to me, is tried and true. if it were over-the-counter medication, however, the store brand works for me.

Q2: absolutely not. i'm totally nearsighted but i don't like people messing around w/ my eyes when it isn't necessary, nor do i know anyone who's had this done.

Q3: heh heh. if i'm shortchanged, i'd speak up, for sure, unless it was say, under $1 and the line was really long. if it were the other way around, i'd keep it.

Q4: no, but that wouldn't stop me from boarding a plane.

1. I'll buy the name brand cereals. My favorites are Total and Optimum Slim (which is Organic).

2. I've never had the surgery, but a couple of friends know people who have had it. Most seem pleased with the results.

3. I tend to speak up either way. I've been a cashier before and had to deal with a "short" drawer. It's no fun!!!

4. Yes... am I just being naive?

1. Actually the reverse of what someone wrote earlier. I would alwalys buy tried and tested brands if I am buying medicines, but for non-lethal stuff like cereals and household items, I wouldn't mind giving an unknown brand a go at least once. Of course, I tend to have very specific tastes in alcohol...:)

2. I wouldn't have laser surgery unless I had very bad vision where my glasses were restricting my daily life. If I had minor hypermetropia, myopia, or astigmatism (the last I do, actually), I prefer remaining as I am with glasses. In any case, glasses, when selected carefully add to the the face value. I think I look more distinguished and better with glasses than otherwise. ;)

3. I would mention it most times, and I have, unless I was pissed with the cashier for some reason (rudeness, slowness etc.).

4. The measures seem comprehensive enough, till you hear news like a plane being diverted 6000 miles because Cat Stevens was on board! Then it becomes ridiculous and we get the impression that the maybe screeners are clueless and really don't recognize the enemy.

1. It depends what I am buying. I have a favortie cereal that only comes in one brand, but I'll buy the store brand if it's frosted flakes. They taste just as good. But cosmetics and things like that I buy specific brands. I'm into more organic items and foods.

2. I don't wear contacts or glasses. Anything concerning the eyes and touching them makes me squeamish. Not sure I'd have the surgery unless I really needed it. My friend's mother had Lasik sergery and now no longer needs glasses.

3. Well, it would be helpful if the cashier would hand me my change first and then my bills, otherwise the pennies and dimes and nickles are all sliding out of my hand. Also, cashiers used to count back your change...I don't see that som much anymore. But, if I got the wrong amount returned I would tell the cashier. I alway count my change before I leave the counter. Don't want that person to get in trouble for giving out too much and possibly be blamed for stealing.

4. I NEED to have confidence in the screening procedures, since I've been flying lately. I just hope the screening is working. But I did read that a checked bag went through with fireworks inside. How'd that one get past? Duh!

My answers are on my blog.

A1: Brands are somewhat important...especially in regards to organic-type foods. For cereal...I'm a fan of Kashi products or a good, all-natural Granola.

A2: If I wore eyeglasses (which I don't), I would not have the laser surgery. As for potential problems resulting from the surgery...I do know a high altitude climber who had the surgery, and it significantly effected their vision at altitude, virtually making them blind. This happens due to the change in pressure.

A3: Always either give back or ask for the correct change.

A4: NO...nothing is ever 100% safe. I have a significant lack of confidence in anyone trying to protect our airlines in this age. Either way...I feel that our country has somewhat over-reacted and has given in to scare tactics used by media, governments, and organizations.

1. If the products are same in every way except for the price, I'll go with the cheaper one. I go with the brands if I know that qualitatively they are better.

2. Well, I do wear glasses and I do not want laser surgery. (If wearing glasses makes me forever a dork, so be it.) Have you ever seen videos of the actual surgery? That stuff totally creeps me out.

3. I always speak up when I have the wrong change.

4. No.
