FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1: A 14-year-old Australian boy, Christopher Harris, announced yesterday that next Spring he plans to become the youngest person ever to attempt to climb and summit Mt. Everest. How do you feel about someone as young as Harris attempting such a risky endeavor?

Q2: Are you better off or worse today financially then you were four years ago at this same time (in December of 2000)?

Q3: Do you personally know anyone who has made it really big either in Hollywood, politics, sports, or business? If you don't know anyone directly, how about thru that whole X Degrees of Separation thing?

Q4: If you could choose one event from any point in the future whose outcome could be known to you now, what would you like to know?

1. Well, I don't see any harm as long as his parents are okay with it. Of course, they should accept their liability if anything untoward happens on the climb as well. We have to remember that a 14 year old has a lot of enthusiasm, but not enough judgement. So the inus has to lie strictly with the parents. Not everything is child's play, after all.

2. I am better off financially, no doubt about it, but not so much as I had expected. Unfortunately moving to a higher income bracket meant I got hit with far higher taxes...:(

3. Hmmm...I do know the women's national Table Tennis Champion in my country since she was a child. That's about it!

4. I would like to know when I'll be able to house of my own so I can stop worrying about that now.

1. Kids think they're invincible, so it'll be up to the parents to decide and take responsibility for what they let him do.

2. I'm better off now, but not by much.

3. I guess famous scientists don't count, huh? So, no. Perhaps a friend of a friend knows someone who's famous in Hollywood, sports, etc., but so far, no one has enlightened me yet.

4. I would choose not to know what's happening in the future. I want to retain my little illusions about how the future is not deterministic.

1. I say go for it. I'm sure with him being a minor that he will have a team follow him. I think another point that we as Americans need to consider...people in other countries are in my findings, are very different from our culture of thought. I find in my travels, children are so much more mature and athletic. Think of the Olympics...foreign children start training right out of diapers! This kid just may be very experienced.
2. I am better off in every shape and form!
3. Actually I personally know many stars! Coming from Los Angeles I went to school with many, knew them through friends or work. Andre Agassi, Teri Hatcher, Tom Petty, Flea, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Juliette Lewis (she beat me up and burned me with her cigarette in grade school), Michael Hasselhoff...I can keep going.
4. I'm not sure. It is very enticing to know the future, but on the other hand..depending on what it is; it can weigh heavy on one's shoulders.

1. At first I thought it wouldn't be a good idea, but if this boy is determined to do it, he should at least try. But, if it was my kid...I'd be hesitant to let him go. It's a risky adventure, and he may not be able to endure it. Either way, good for him for taking the chance to do something big at such a young age.

2. August 2000 I got promoted to a position that gave me more work and more stress, but yes, relatively speaking for where I worked, better pay. I'm happy to say that I do earn more now than I did 4 years ago, but not by as much as I probably could be earning.

3. I don't really know anyone who "made it big", but I do have several friends who are actors--a few roles in movies, on TV shows and acting in plays, but nothing HUGE. I'm also acquainted with the actor Amy Brenneman on "Judging Amy". A lot of famous people live in my town/county (does that count)?

4. Not sure I'd want to know the future. What if it was bad? Then you'd spend the rest of your life until that point worrying about it (at least I would). Just have to live each day and hope for the best.

1. If he has the right skills and abilities and his parents are OK with it why not.

2. I am slightly worse off but that is a result of being unemployed since May otherwise I think I would be in better shape

3. I don't know anyone personally but an acquantience of mine went to Broad Ripple High School with the guy who play Jerry on ER, also David Letterman's mother and my grandmother are cousins.

4. The winning lottery numbers

1. I'd want to know more about his mountaineering experience. But, my frist impression is that his parents need to pass the pipe. Fourteen is a really young age to die for a mountain.

2. I am better off, of course I was just 6 months out of college in December 2000.

3. I was a trip leader for the Travel and Recreation Program at the Univ of FL with Coleman Lafoon. He is now married to Ann Heche and father of their child, Homer. Does that count?

4. My wedding day.
