FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1: If a stranger leaves a voicemail message on your home phone for someone you don't know, do you call the person back to tell them they reached the wrong party? If your answer is no, are there any circumstances under which you think you would call the person back?

Q2: Currently, no federal laws exist which prohibit using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Proponents of restricting cell phones while driving point to studies that show that their use while driving contributes to distractions, which lead to accidents. Opponents of these restrictions say there is insufficient evidence to conclude that mobile phones are any different from other distractions to drivers. What do you think...should automobile drivers be allowed to talk on the phone while driving?

Q3: Industry conferences and trade shows afford their attendees with opportunities to see 'what's next'. For example, at the Outdoor Retailer Show, outdoor recreation industry professionals, i.e., manufacturers, retailers, guides, and the media, all get a sneak peek at the outdoor gear we'll see in stores at some point in the future. If you could choose to attend any one industry conference or trade show, complete with full access to everything and everybody at the show, which industry would you choose?

Q4: Do you have a favorite weird food or weird drink combination? If so, what is it? If not, did you ever have one when you were growing up?

Q1: Well it all depends on the nature of the message, if it sounds important and urgent, I will call back and tell them that they had the wrong number. But if itís just chit-chat Iíll just ignore it.
It actually happened to me, I called my cousin about my mother's death. They called back and told me that I got the wrong number.

Q2: Good question, I believe something has to be done but what I donít know. I think they are ok to use in certain circumstances and road conditions. If the traffic is light or if itís just a quick message I think that would be alright. You just have to use common sense and how do you legislate that?
I use mine like that, if the traffic gets heavy, Iíll hang up. If there are too many distractions I wonít use it. I keep the calls short and use it to get directions or if I am running late, not for idle gossip or business. One other thing I wonít do, use it when I have someone else in my car, I think it is very rude to be talking on the phone and ignoring your passenger.
Once I got run off the road by someone with the phone cradled under their shoulder while they were writing on a pad on their steering wheel.

Q3: I think I would like to go to the Consumer Electronics Show in Los Vegas, so many gadgets to play with.

Q4: Nope, just regular American and some Mexican cuisines. Well many be, I like barbeque sauce on fried eggs instead of ketchup.

1. I call the person. It's just the polite thing to do.

2. I just got back from Italy and I saw some of the most exhilirating driving known on this planet. I saw VERY few people on their cell phones while drving. Oddly, I saw quite a few scooterists that had pulled to the side of the road to answer a cell phone. Our driver from the airport to the hotel had a system in his car that played the conversation through the stereo system and had a discrete microphone near sun visor. That system was ideal. It was truly hands free, more so than those damn boom mics or tear-drop mics that people wear in their ears. I think that I'm going to look into getting that system installed on my vehicle. I'm pretty sure that that my stereo system is compatible.

3. I would go to computer/electronics industry shows. That's not to say I would turn down an invite to OR, cause I'd go in a heartbeat, but I would drool myself into a prune at an electronics show.

4. In Italy, I found this phenomenal drink, pompenello. It was a multi-vitamin beverage made from carrot, lemon and orange juices. It was SOOOOOO good. But it had a very odd, nuclear orange color to it. As a kid, we used to make 'suicides' at Burger King. Essentially, you would put a little bit from all of the soda fountains into your cup. Often, you could get some tasty combos.

1. Generally I try and call the person and let them know.
2. I think the same people that can't smoke and drive, drink (any kind of liquids) and drive, eat and drive, plain old drive, should definitely not be allowed to talk on a cell phone and drive. I would be willing to bet that those who have problems with cell phones and driving have problems driving period. A common sense person knows when and how much one should do anything else in addition to driving. I have seen people reading and driving!!!!
3.The tech trade show in Las Vegas. I would love to see all the new computers, video and digital cameras, audio gadgets... what fun!
4. What's weird? Do you mean like peanut butter and pickles, or cottage cheese and catsup? Nope, not me. I'm pretty normal. Some people might think I am weird because I love sushi, but many people would not.
I'm back Mikal.

1. I usually would not return the call...I would imagine the caller would eventually figure out they had the wrong number. Unless the call sounds like it is urgent, then I would call them back.
2. I feel the government has enough control over our lives...we don't need them controlling what we do or do not do in our own car. If they ban cell phones, they might as well ban eating while driving, putting make up on while driving, elderly driving..etc. I agree there are people out there whom have pratically killed me while they were driving with the phone in their ear oblivious to the world around them. I'm not sure I have an answer, but government control surely is not the answer.
3. There are a couple of make-up conventions I would love to go to.
4. I LOVE cold, left over Chinese food (especially rice!) and cold pizzia. I also like peanut butter on celery.

1. No, I don't call them back. Chances are that if the person they intended to call doesn't call them back, they will try again and get the number right. I'm just surprised that people don't recognize the voice on the answering machine (unless it's computerized VM).

2. I don't think drivers should be allowed to use a cell phone while driving unless it's an emergency. I've seen too many people driving behind me, NOT paying attention to the road or signals because they're so focused on their conversation. Plus, you have to take your eyes off the road and steering wheel to dial. I think a law might make it better, but people always break laws.

3. I'd love to go to a book trade show. Imagine all the free books I could scoop up. Also, a candy or food trade show. All those scrumptious things to eat.

4. Hmm...I don't think I have ever had any weird food combinations, none that I remember. Oh, but when I was a kid I used to mix vinegar and oil together in a bowl and dunk my break (funny, now it's "chic" to do that at some restaurants)-must've been my Italian upbringing. My sister used to eat mustard sandwiches when she was little. And the one thing I can't understand is dipping pizza in ranch dressing.

1. I do not have voicemail (yeah, yeah, I live in the dark ages) so I do not have to worry about this problem. However, if I did, I would only call back if it was an emergency.

2. I am not sure a complete ban would be reasonable. Sure, I'm annoyed by people talking on the cell phone and driving, but I would make an exception if it was an emergency.

3. Maybe a computer show.

4. Milk and miso.

Q1) NO. Color me rude.

Q2) Only unless you outlaw the following while driving, too: eating, shaving, smoking, putting on makeup, drinking hot coffee, driving with a child, driving with a pet, fumbling for CDs, etc.

Q3) Art suppliers, Furnishings

Q4) Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches w/ mayo. My grandmother used to make them for me when I was little, and every once in awhile I make myself one.

1: Yes I would. Just because I would like to be told if I were the one leaving the message to the wrong number. Common courtesy.
2: I would agree with the law. I also agree that with common sense you can keep it short and safe, but as read above, you can't regulate common sense, and I'd rather decrease the chances of someone getting hurt (like wearing seat belts). I don't have stats to back this up, but I bet there's more people out there talking on their cell phones than people eating or shaving or putting make up on while driving. And you can always pull over if it's an emergency... and if it's really, really an emergency, a fine would be worth taking that call.
3: I'll go for electronic gadgets. There's so many new things every year it's difficult to keep up.
4: I don't think so, although for some people it is weird to eat raw seafood... i grew up with sushi and ceviche, so not big deal there...

Q1: Oh, I almost always call back. I think itís both responsible and kind to do so.

Q2: I think it's okay for drivers to talk on phones while driving but only with the caveat that they be required to use a hands-free device in order to do so.

Q3: The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the National Restaurant Associationís Restaurant & Hotel-Motel Show, and the FMI Show (Food Marketing Institute Show).

Q4: The closest thing I have today to a weird-food combination would be Boca Ground Beef with raspberry salsa mixed in.
