FOUR FOR FRIDAY
Q1: It's Friday afternoon and you're just about to leave work when your boss approaches and says she has been really impressed with your work as of late, and she'd like for you to take her credit card home for the weekend to be used for a meal and drinks for two at any restaurant of your choice; oh, and by the way... she also tells you to spare no expense, because you've earned it! Taking into consideration that turning her down isn't an option, what restaurant do you go to, and who do you bring along to celebrate.
Q2: If you listen to the radio on your way to and from work, do you tune in to the same station each day? How about on your way home... do you listen to a different station than the one you tune in for the morning commute? If you don't listen to the radio, do you listen to tapes or CDs instead? If you listen to tapes or CDs, are there certain genres that you prefer to listen to in the morning verses on the drive home at the end of the day?
Q3: Kid Rock was arrested last week on charges that he punched a disc jockey at a strip club. Kobe Bryant agreed this week to a settlement with the woman who accused him of raping her. Michael Jackson may or may not have molested children in his California home. Robert Blake stands accused of whacking his wife. Martha Stewart is about to be released from federal prison after serving five-months for insider trading. Honestly, does anything surprise you anymore?
Q4: Do you drink coffee or tea on a daily basis? If so, what brand/flavor is your favorite, and, do you find that you drink it because you like it or because you just canít operate without it?

1. Ruth's Chris Steak House, and I take my friend Tiffany.
2. Depends on my mood. If I listen to radio, it is either NPR or KS107.5, the local hip-hop/R&B station. If I listen to a CD, then it is likely a disc full of rap MP3's. Lately, I most often listen to my iPod, on shuffle. If I have an important meeting, then I listen to the Cash Money Millionaires', "Money Ain't a Thang."
3. I'm surprised that the media gives them so much attention, they get off so easily and that the general populace cares so much.
4. I drink coffee almost every morning. My favorite roaster (brand) is Batdorf & Bronson (http://www.batdorf.com/). However, it's a hard brand to find locally. So, I normally buy Peaberry or one of the local roasters. Every now and again, I will break down and get some Yukon Blend from Starschmucks, which makes a delicious french press. I drink coffee because I love the taste, aroma and ritual. I drink far less coffee now than when we worked together, but wish I could consume it all day.
1. Any place except this one restaurant which I heard was the place of several credit card frauds. I don't usually eat out, so I'd have to ask for recommendations. I'm not sure who I'd bring as a dinner companion either.
2. Anything except country or rap.
3. No.
4. I don't drink it daily, but I do like mint tea.
Q1: Since breaking the rules is what probably what got me noticed in the first placeóand Iím not talking about blatant rule breaking here, but if my boss said this to me, it probably means that I operated somewhat outside of the box to achieve unusually good resultsóIím going to break the rules on this one too. Rather than take someone to one of my favorite restaurants, where I may have ended up spending between $200 and $300 dollars on a really good meal with drinks, Iíd spend that $200 to $300 dollars at a local grocery store, buying enough food to feed a whole bunch of needy people. Rather than celebrate my supposed work-related success with just one other person at some swank/tony restaurant, Iíd impact a much larger population with the generosity.
Q2: I always start off by listening to the Bob & Tom Show (94.7 WFBQ here in Indianapolis). I flip to WFYI (our local NPR station) when commercials come on, and then back to WFBQ when I think their commercials have had their run. Before I leave my car, I change the station from WFBQówhich is classified as a ëclassic rockí stationóover to 87.7, which is where our local ABC television networkís signal can be heard on the radio. If I like whatís playing (usually the local news), Iíll keep it there for the ride home, but if I donít, Iíll usually switch over to WIBC, an AM talk station.
Q3: Nothing, and I mean ënothingí, surprises me anymore. Diane Sawyer, Bert & Ernie, and Sandra Day O'Connor could all be accused and convicted of pulling off a robbery at the U.S. Mint, and I wouldnít be surprised. Amused, yes; surprised, not in the least.
Q4: Iíve recently taken up drinking tea in the morning at work, and since I tend to drink the caffeine-free variety, itís not a dependency-based habit like drinking coffee might be for some people. My favorite, favorite, favorite tea is English Toffee Dessert Tea from Celestial Seasonings. As for coffee, I absolutely love Dunkiní Donutsí decaffeinated blend, poured over a full glass of ice, toped with low-fat milk and a sprinkleójust a sprinkle mind ofóof Sweet & Low. I call it the ultimate oxy-moronic drink in the history of coffee.
Q1) Keystone Grill. My partner. (In all seriousness, I'd start looking for a new job. These kinds of "gifts" often come with a karmic "catch" in my opinion. That, and the fact you might get in trouble for using someone else's credit card.)
Q2) WFYI FM90.1 NPR & PRI all day, all night.
Q3) MS was convicted for lying to a federal investigator even though she was never under oath; the insider trading was dropped.
What surprises me is how sick we have become by getting off on pointing fingers at other's mistakes.
Q4) No, I can't drink either as it contains ergots that make me nauseated. I'm a bottled water man.
(1) We go to Dunaway's, I bring my wife, and most of the money goes toward the best wines we can find on the list. Mikal, being altruistic is cheating -- the rules were you have to spend it on dinner for yourself! It also makes the rest of us look bad!
(2) I alternate between WTTS (a holdover from my Bloomington days) and WFYI (NPR). There was a time last summer when I tried out Bob & Tom for a month, and not that I didn't like it, but I just got tired of it after a month. Believe me, if I had a CD player in my car, I'd use it. It would justify all the money I've spent on CDs over the years.
(3) Never surprised by the depths to which we can go, constantly surprised by the heights we can achieve.
(4) I've never been driven by caffeine. I will only drink coffee with a meal, almost exclusively breakfast, and then only at a restaurant where someone will make coffee for me (I don't know how to use a coffee maker). I used to be a much bigger tea drinker than I am. Maybe I should start that again.
Q1: I would feel uncomfortable using someone else's credit cards, so I would thank her, tell her I appreciated the offer, and then graciously decline. If she feels that strongly about buying my dinner, she could give me cash or a gift certificate. Unless the real reason she asked me was because she "liked me" then I would let her take me to dinner herself. : )
Q2: I always listen to 87.7 on my way into work to catch up on the news. But on my way home, I always listen to CDís, I burn new ones most everyday at work, so I always have mood music to listen to on the way home depending what mood I am in.
Q3: Yes, I am surprised that people are still bringing children into this hell on earth.
Q4: I drink both on occasion depending on my mood. My favorite tea is an apple cinnamon herbal tea, and my favorite coffee beverage is a mocha latte.
1. I'd take my partner and we'd probably go to Marco's. I would feel equally uncomfortable spending a whole lot of money or too little.
2. Almost always, NPR to and from work. If I'm listening to CDs, I'll listen to something quiet, like Sarah Brightman, going to work, and dance music or rock on the way out of work (especially if I'm going to the gym).
3. It surprises me that Martha Stewart's crime garnered as much or more hype than the others. While the others are accused of muderer, rape, child molestation, all Martha did was try to save herself some money. She didn't hurt anyone and yet she might be the only one to serve prison time.
4. Coffee. Starbucks Sumatra. I don't think I'm addicted to caffeine, I really do love the taste of coffee.
1. Well, I too wouldn't feel comfortable using her personal credit card--if it was a company card, maybe. But if she insisted, I'd go to a nice restaurant I've never been to and take my boyfriend.
2. I usually listen to NPR in the morning, and sometimes Howard Stern if he's not being too gross. If there are commercials or NPR is rehasing something about Iraq I switch over to KOOL 96.7--Good times, great oldies...or listen to one of the CD mixes I have. On the way home, a CD.
3. I'm so sick of the news and celebrities who are arrested. Just because they are famous it doesn't mean their crime is anymore worthy of news than anyone else. I refuse to read, listen to or hear about any of the Michael Jackson crap. I have no interest in him. Martha was sentenced because she is a woman with a lot of money and some power and "the man" just wanted to bring her down. Nothing surprises me anymore. The news media had jaded me a bit.
4. I'm a tea drinker, and usually drink it more during the winter. I love going to High Tea. My favorite flavors--Nutcracker Sweet and Vanilla Hazelnut by Celestial Seasons; any kind of mint, lemon and a good green tea. I've never even had a whole cup of coffee...too bitter!
1. Mikal's and "No Name" get my vote on this question. Guess, I cheat too.
2. I listen to WTPI almost exclusively when the radio is on. NightBreeze is my favorite... of coarse one of my Best Friends is a DJ there so I am biased.
3. Sensationalism sells things in this county. It does not surprise me when the media exploits itself. I am glad there is an off button on the TV and radio.
4. I love coffee 24/7/365. I grind my own beans and mix many varieties. My coffee has to have cream in it. Tea is good too. I always get some when I go to Steak/Shake... weird!
~Great questions BTW!
I would go to a moderately price restaurant. There is a nice inn up near Uconn in Mansfield CT that was an old mill which was built in the early 1800ís. I would bring five others friends and I would want the table by the window that overlooks the countryside. After the meal sit outside on the balcony and have some wine (Of course it would have to be in the summer).
The drive to work is just four miles so I donít get to listen too much. But, I usually list to talk radio or NPR.
I donít pay much attention to those types of news stories with celebrities. I get most of my news off the web reading newspaper from around the world.
I drink tea in the morning and coffee at night. Itís easier to make good tea at work than it is coffee. Iím one of those persons who do not pass any Dunkín Donuts or any other coffee shops on the way to work and I wonít drink any vending machine coffee.
At home at night I can make fresh ground coffee with dinner.
I'd tell her, I can't take your credit card, but I'd love to have dinner with you, I have some ideas I'd like to throw around with you. I know a great Indian restaurant.
If I am craving human contact, Bob and Tom in the morning. NPR otherwise. Sometimes I listen to 87.7, but sometimes when I listen to network news I feel like I'm being programmed by big brother or something. I just got an ipod so lately I've been listening to music mostly. I listen to everything.
MARTHA STEWART FREE AT LAST!
sigh, I'm so sick of the media. If it snows it's freaking armageddon. Doomsday I tell you, doomsday. I'm pulling away from all that hooie and picking and choosing all my own news. Of course I still read that crap!!!!!!!!!! Trainwreck.
I like Chai Tea. Celestial Seasonings Decaf Chai is great with creamer and splenda. It's like having a spicy dessert. Otherwise it's diet soda.
A1: Oh heck...I'd go all out!
A2: I'm an NPR fanatic, but always have my iPod with me that is packed with podcasts and all my music. Makes no difference what time of day...any genre is fine.
A3: Makes no difference if someone is a celebratory or a celebrated personality...no one is ever immune to human fault and error.
A4: tea - prefer a good double Earl Grey. coffee - a good French Roast or lightly cut espresso. Recently started drinking YurbaMate. I truly enjoy the taste and experience, but I also rely upon the ritual.
hi once again!!! Just wanted to know if i could comment on your four for friday????
i mainly ask because your website says only local residents may answer??
Laurie:
If that's true, I've been breaking the rules all this time... a rule that I didn't even know existed! :)
I guess I've just been corrupting 4FF with my Southern Liberal* thought all this time!
*It's not an oxymoron. Of course, I don't really consider myself a Southerner anyway, since I'm originally from a land of snow and cold, but I've gotta do my part for free thought down here...
Laurie (and anyone else who wants to know)... anyone and everyone--from far and wide to my own street in downtown Indianapolis--is welcome and encouraged to post comments, anytime and anywhere they're asked for on 'this here' site!
Well, thank-you so very much for answering my comment! I look forward to many wonderful hours in and around your (blog?). Sorry, I am a bit computer ignorrant! Chow for now.
