FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1: Do you think law enforcement officials, i.e. police officers, state troopers, sheriffs, etc., should be allowed to drive police cars during their time off (say to the mall or supermarket on the weekend)?

Q2: Whose autograph would you be willing to stand in line for an hour or more to receive?

Q3: How many ice cube trays do you have in your freezer, and have you ever used them to make anything other than traditional ice cubes?

Q4: If your personal safety were guaranteed, what two or three things would you do that right now you would not even remotely consider doing?

Here in Connecticut they allow the state troopers to use their cruisers for personal use. I donít think that towns and cities police departments allow them to use the cars. I am not entirely in favor of them using, but now it is a perk that would be hard to get the unions to change. The practice started with the rural towns that didnít have their own police force and a resident state trooper was assigned to the town. It was felt that they were on duty 24/7 and have should have a car available to them all the time. And of course if the rural officers can use their car, than they all should. I think it is an outdated practice since there are no more resident state troopers I believe.

None. I have had books autographed, but I never stood in line for more than a couple of minutes.

I donít have any ice cube trays in the freezer. I guess you can say I never thought out of the box and used the trays for anything other than water.

If I didnít have to worry about my safety and health, I would like a ride in the space shuttle and also a hang glider.

2. Probably the authors of books I've loved, but many of those authors are no longer living.

3. Two trays. I haven't frozen anything other than water yet, but I might if I were to make my own spaghetti sauce. It'd be a convenient way to defrost a small serving.

4. A double axel or any triple jump and driving in a demolition derby.

1. I think it's kind of odd to see a family getting out of a police car together to go shopping at the grocery store, but if it's not against the police department's rules, then I guess it's okay. Maybe it's the only other car in the family or it's safer to drive because it is a police car.

2. These days there really isn't anyone I'm too crazy about receiving an autograph from, but if I had to choose, maybe Jon Stewart. He seems like a nice guy and he'd probably crack a few jokes.

3. There are two ice cube trays in my freezer. Aside from ice, I haven't used them to freeze anything else, but it would be fun to freeze some flavored cubes and use in a drink.

4. I'm not much of a risk taker, but if my personal safety was guaranteed I'd probably go whitewater rafting, that may sound tame, but it can be very dangerous. Another thing I might consider, driving a race car.

Q1: So long as they do not abuse the privledge, I think it's fine for law enforcement officials to use work-issued vehicles for personal use. More police cars on the road are always a good thing, in my opinion. That being said, it is a bit unsettling--and I can't say exactly why--to see a family of four unloaded from police car that just rolled up to Bed Bath & Beyond (in other words, it's the cop's day off, and he's using the police cruiser to take the family out shopping).

Q2: I'd be willing to stand in line for an hour or more to receive an autograph only from someone I knew. Doing so would be my way of showing my respect to the person.

Q3: I have four ice cube trays in my freezer, and they've never been used for freezing anything other than water. I'm intrigued though about what else I could freeze using ice cube trays, so I'm interested to see what other people say they've used theirs for.

Q4: Free-climb Yosemite's El Capitan; punch a few people in the face, and roller blade.

1. I have a friend who is a police officer, and as a rule, he doesn't drive his car off duty. He has told me of situations when an off duty officer was in the right place at the right time and driving the "official" police car came in handy for a police situation. I am sure this has happened more than once. It doesn't bother me as long as it isn't misused.
2. I stood in line twice for artist James Christensen to sign a couple of books and prints. His signings are so creative and original and he is so entertaining and down to earth. I would do it again and again.
3. I don't have any ice cube trays.
4. I would love to hang glide.

1) Of course the issue is not black and white. I don't like paying for the car's gasoline. I don't look forward to the day when that car has to be replaced and a new one purchased on my tax-dime knowing that it may have lasted a year or more if it had been parked when the officer was off duty. However, more Police cars driving the streets give the illusion of more active patrols. If this slows down a reckless driver, or dissuades a would-be carjacker, then great. Drive along officer.

2) I haven't stood in line for hours for an autograph but I did recently sit through an 88 minute B-movie to get Bruce Campbell's autograph. I sat through a reading by Margaret Atwood to get her to sign _Alias Grace._ And I stood as a sort of cheap "crowd control" for Kenny Loggins to get his autograph. I don't know if I would stand in line for anybody but probably not.

3) My girlfriend's 9-year old daughter freezes all manner of drinks...sodas, flavored water, tea, Kool-Aid, milk. However, now? Nothing. All ice trays are sitting beside the refrigerator.

4) I don't remember the last question...daredevilly stuff, was that it? Bring it.

1. Not at all. I know that one of the reasons that it's allowed is because of some imagined "deterrance factor," but realistically? That cop driving to Wal-Mart or Super Target with his wife and kids in the car isn't going to be in any hurry to respond to a call or pull over a drunk driver. They also say its a fringe benefit at times. I say assign a value to the perk and pay them that amount instead.

2. Jo Rowling, Eric Clapton

3. None, but in the past, I've used them for all sorts of flavored cubes. Those Bloody Mary cubes stained so bad that I just chucked the trays out and started with new ones though.

4. Climb Everest, dive on the Andrea Doria, participate in a swordfight

1. Yes, but to a limited extent. I'm perfectly fine with some cops using their cruisers to go commute to/from work, and maybe reasonable stops along the way. However, I don't believe that the cruiser should be used for running personal errands. Essentially, I believe that the visibility of the police car in a neighborhood is a positive 'security' measure.

2. I might stand in an extended line for ...ahh, never mind. An hour, that's a long damn time. The longest I've waited for an autograph was about 15 mins. I got the entire (two person at the time) band to sign my shirt. That band was/is Ween, only the greast band to walk our planet.

3. I only have the one 'tray' beacause I have an ice maker that just dumps the ice into a tray.

4. I'd fly. I would throw myself off a building and fly. I would fly without the aid of wings or motors. I would throw myself at the ground, and miss.

Q1: Do you think law enforcement officials, i.e. police officers, state troopers, sheriffs, etc., should be allowed to drive police cars during their time off (say to the mall or supermarket on the weekend)?

No, I do not think that police cars should be used during personal time. The taxpayer is footing the bill for gasoline and repairs for the police cars, so it's no right for the officers to use them when not protecting the people.

Q2: Whose autograph would you be willing to stand in line for an hour or more to receive?

Jessica Simpson, I know, but just to look in to those vacant eyes for three minutes, it would be bliss.

Q3: How many ice cube trays do you have in your freezer, and have you ever used them to make anything other than traditional ice cubes?

I have three, I made Kool-Aid pops with them once.

Q4: If your personal safety were guaranteed, what two or three things would you do that right now you would not even remotely consider doing?

I'd go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, I'd "get with" a couple a dozen porn stars, and I'd go to Brunei for a week or two, try and get in the good graces of the monarchy.

1) Same as what everyone else has said.
2) I'd wait for an hour or more for Nelson Mandela's autograph, maybe John Mellencamp, too, if he wasn't smoking.
3) 2 trays, water only.
4) I'd go to a safari in the Okavongo Delta in Botswana, if safety were not an issue. Of course, I'd also have to find a way to afford it. In general, I'd probably travel a lot more if I had more money and had less worry about safety.
