FOUR FOR FRIDAY
Q1: If you were offered an opportunity to travel free of charge to any destination on earth for just a 30 minutes visit, where would you choose to go and why?
Q2: Have you ever taken a cooking class? If so, was it fun and worthwhile, or did you feel it was a waste of your time and money? If you've never taken a cooking class, would you like to enroll in one? If so, what cuisine or techniques would like to learn?
Q3: With Category 4 and 5 hurricanes dominating the news, how prepared would you say you are to successfully ride out a major storm like Katrina or Rita? Said differently, do you have enough supplies on hand to be able to cope with the fallout that accompanies power outages and the like? If not, are you now thinking about stockpiling supplies such as drinking water, food, gasoline, medicines, batteries, etc.?
Q4: The average automobile stands still 23 hours a day. How about yours... how many hours a day would you say your car sits idle (not counting being caught in stop-and-go traffic)?

1. I would go to some uninhabited Carribean island, preferrably on an amphibious aircraft. Why? B/c I've dreamt that dream for years.
2. Never. N/A. I would. Chinese & Mexican.
3. I'd be pretty well off. I have quite a bit of 'dry food' goods. I have camp stoves with plenty of white gas. I have a water filter and purification tablets. I'm could likely go a little over a week, possible squeeze a bit more time if rationed carefully.
4. Umm...yeah, 23hrs...sounds good.
Q1. Maybe Antarctica, just so I can say Iíve been there.
Q2: Nope, I have never taking a cooking class. But I have taken two semesters of chemistry, which is basically the same thing. Add a little of this and pinch of that, heat and stir. ;-)
Q3: I think I am well prepared; I have all my camping gear from my backpacking days (stove, sleeping bag and etc.), woodstove for heat and cooking, plenty of canned foods and the hot water heater has 50 gallons of water in it. I think that here in the northeast, the bigger threat is winter blizzards where we can loose power for a week and be snowed in for several days. That is exactly happened in í78 we were snowed in for three days and without power for over a week.
Q4: Maybe an hour or two less, work is only ten minutes away, but I go out a lot at night to meetings.
1. Antarctica. It's too cold to visit any longer than 30 minutes.
2. I haven't taken any cooking classes but I think it would be interesting to do, whatever the cuisine.
3. I don't live in a location where hurricanes are a problem. But if I were, I'd definitely get enough supplies to let me survive for a while.
4. 23 hours sounds about right.
1. This is an interesting question and I need to ponder it more. I like the idea of Antarctica for the aforementioned reasons, but I actually think I might say Baghdad or Iraq right now. To get a real perspective. But I'd be too frightened to stay for a long time.
2. I've never taken a cooking class, but I would love to take one for working mothers. Basically, an upgraded home-ec class. Good non-fussy food for cheap that isn't over processed. Far and away the hardest part of being a parent for me is coming up with something relatively healthy to feed my family 7 days week, 52 weeks a year, that I can afford, make quickly, will satisfy at least 3 of the household members, and provide some leftovers. I have plenty of "stock recipes" but they take a lot of time, which is not something I have a whole lot of. Three days a week, I get home at 6 with two hungry and picky kids. Obviously we eat out sometimes, but I always feel guilty doing that.
3: If we got some more fuel for our campstove (PowerMax fuel), we'd be good for about a week, but my kids would starve anyway b/c they'd never eat that stuff. We usually have 2-4 cases of water, a blanket, flashlight, matches, and our emergency weather-only radio ready to go if there's a Tornado warning in our area.
4: I'd say 21 or 22 hours. Wow. Talk about over-designed; we should all be driving European "smart cars" and just rent the big vans/etc. for vacations and long road trips. I wonder if anyone's ever done the math on that. Hmm.
And, BTW, Happy Birthday, Mikal. I hope you're doing well. Let me know where you land.
Cheers,
Ami
1. Not sure, there are so many places I'd like to see, but either the North Pole or South Pole. I think with the exterme temps. 30 minutes would be more than enough.
2. I have never taken a cooking class, but have considered it. Not sure what type I would take though.
3. I do not have a lot of supplies not do I plan on stockpiling. Living in the midwest the chances of a hurricane are nill. A tornado might destory some homes, but will not bring a city to a hault as Katrina did.
4. I have been doing a lot of traveling recently. My car spends a majority of M-F in the parking lot at the airport. So I would say 23+ hours a day. Its mainly used on weekends
Mine is done. I noticed I'm not the only one who selected Antarcticia.
Maybe if we pool our resources...?
1. Only 30 minutes? Hmm...well, since it's raining today, I think I'd like to go somewhere sunny, with a beach and blue ocean that I could swim in.
2. Not really, the closest I've come is Home Ec. in school. We learned basic stuff. I think I'd like to learn how to make more Italian dishes.
3. I could probably be better prepared. I have lots of candles and matches, but would need the essentials: canned food, bottled water, First Aid kit, etc.
4. About 24 hours. I don't need to use it everyday. I use it more on the weekends.
