FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1: When you were in high school or college, did you purchase/wear a class or school ring? If so, do you wear it anymore?

Q2: How often do you use a public or college or university library? What's the last book you checked out of a library?

Q3: Earlier this week, Apple introduced a video-enabled version of its ubiquitous iPod. Do you own an iPod or MP3 player? If so, do you download and listen to non-music podcasts? If you do listen to podcasts, which ones are you currently subscribed/listening to? If you do not own an iPod or comparable device, would you like to have one? If so, do you think you'd use your new iPod mostly for music or podcasts?

Q4: How concerned are you about a widespread outbreak of what's being called the Avian Flu?

Comments:

1. I did not purchase a ring; would've liked to at the time but was too poor. Just as well b/c I wouldn't wear it now.

2. I use the local public library so much that the librarians send us a christmas card. The last book I checked out was El coronel no tiene quien le escriba by M·rquez.

3. I use an M P 3 player to listen to music while I run.

4. Maybe I'm naÔve but I'm really not all that concerned about the bird flu.

4. Oscarina, and everyone else, should be very concerned about the bird flu. I am. What could be worse than a bunch of dead birds all over the place? Also, just think of the danger to people driving to have dead birds falling from the sky. And who is going to clean up all of those dead birds? The cleanup problem in New Orleans is bad enough without the added burden of dead birds. Finally, what about the impact to the economy? This could drive KFC and Popeyeís out of business and could even hurt the chicken McNuggets movement.

Q1: It has been 38 years since I got my high school ring, 34 years since I got my college ring and they just donít fit anymore.

Q2: I use to go all the time, but lately due to all the groups I am involved with I find it harder to finish the books on time. So I have been buying the books and donating them to the library when I finish them.

Q3: I find FM radio stations that play the music I want to hear and listen to those stations. However, I do listen to a webcast on my computer, a weekly talk show from MIT. As for the videos, I donít watch that much television, so I donít have much desire to buy an iPod and watch TV on it

Q4: Not too concerned about a widespread outbreak of what's being called the Avian Flu. After all there can just as easily be an outback of a half a dozen other type of diseases. That just happens to be the virus de Jour. You could just get bit by a mosquito and get the West Nile virus or bit by a tick and get Lyme Disease.

1) I did not purchase one; I really didn't have much interest in them, quite frankly.
2) We use the public library about once every other week, once a week in the colder weather. The kids love story hour/craft time there. The last book that was on my card was some Berenstain Bears book about picking up toys. I did not check out a grownup book for me at our last trip, but I did check out Nora Jones CD.
3) My hubby owns an iPod and loves it. He uses it almost exclusively for music. I wouldn't mind one, but don't need all the bells and whistles. What I would like is an iPod-shuffle that lets me make two lists; one laid-back/one energetic. That's it; nothing more, nothing less.
4) I have totally tuned out any information about the bird flu. I just can't handle the thought of another impending crisis at the moment, so I'm living in blissful ignorance at the moment.

Q1: I had a beautiful class ring. It was platinum with a square mother of pearl setting. It looked very antique. I bruised my knuckle once because I hit my steering wheel wearing that ring (the boy at the time had upset me.) I don't wear it anymore because I had it in a velvet bag in my old car and when it died I took everything out, put it in the garage and have never found it since.

Q2: I go to the public library a lot. I used to go to my university library about every other day. The last book I checked out from my library was a book about writing with interviews from authors.

Q3: First of all, I have no idea what a podcast is. I have a cheap MP 3 player from Target that I use constantly because my car stereo is busted and I have to use one of those radio interceptors to hear the MP 3 player through the radio. I would love to have an iPod but they're too expensive and, knowing me, I'd break the damn thing anyway. I use my MP 3 player for music only.

Q4: Is that the bird flu? Not at all, really. Until there is a threat near home, I'm not losing sleep over it.

1. No, I didn't really like high school, so I didn't get a class ring. I didn't get one for college either. I think those class rings are ugly anyway and never liked how they looked on people's hands.

2. I used to go to the library quite often, but I haven't been reading much or watching too many movies at home. I love the library, though, all those free books to read!

3. I don't own any of those things, but think they are pretty cool.

4. It totally freaks me out! I sincerely hope nothing bad happens and that it's all just hype. I hate living with that kind of fear.

1. I bought one in High School, but didn't see the point in college. The high school ring is sitting in a box somewhere, just like it has since I graduated.

2. I'm at my library branch at least once a week and checked out a book or two just this afternoon. There's too many books to read and not enough money to buy them all.

3. Don't own an ipod, but woudldn't mind having one.

4. Not very. Every day there's a new deadly threat to our health, so I tune it all out. If something's gonna kill me, it'll kill me whether I worry bout it or not.

Hi Mikal, I love your blog. I found the link to it in Mcfedries blog. Lets not rant on and on and start answering those questions:
1)In Singapore, we don't wear school rings.
2)In my school, the library just sucks so I go to my neighbourhood library(thats wear I found Mcfedries' book.
3)Don't own an Ipod but I have a Besta Dictionary that comes with the same function other than a dictionary.
4)It does not spread properly from humans to humans. Just don't go and hug birds and chickens like you do to teddy bears and you should be alright. Theres no reason to worry!

Posted by: Terry at October 14, 2005 8:46 PM

1. No. It's a waste of money and I wouldn't wear it anyway.

2. I use the library all the time. I don't have money to buy all the books that I need or want so I go there at least once a week.

3. Nope, I don't own an iPod or M P 3 player. I just use my laptop.

4. I'm somewhat worried but not terribly. The spread of the virus from human to human at the moment isn't that efficient.

1. Did not buy a class ring in high school (Class of 1975) nor in college (Class of 1980)

2. Several times a month. Most recent book checked out, "A Crack in the Earth," Simon Winchester's account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

3. I use my Treo 600 smartphone as an MP-3 player and it does a great job. I use it to listen to music as well as books from Audible.com. I have one of those FM transmitter thingys, so I can listen to my own music or Audible books on the great sound system in my car while I drive (which I do way too much of!).

4. Interested, not yet terribly concerned. Need to see more deaths than 60, to be candid.
