FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - Kids and School: A local car dealership in Yuma, Arizona, has announced it will hold a raffle at the end of the school year awarding brand new cars to two high school students who achieved perfect school attendance records for the year. How do you feel about incentives and awards for perfect school attendance?

Q2 - Religion and Government: Earlier this week, a federal district court judge ruled that the prayers opening the daily sessions of the Indiana House of Representatives must be nondenominational and may not advance any one religion in particular. In the court-issued opinion, U.S. District Judge David Hamilton wrote that the "official prayers" offered at the Indiana House ěconsistently advance the beliefs that define the Christian religion", and that moving forward, prayers in Jesusí name--or anyone else's name for that matter--would no longer be allowed. How do you feel about Judge Hamilton's ruling? Should prayers invoking Jesus, Moses, Allah, etc. be allowed during the opening of the daily sessions at the Indiana House of Representatives, or do you feel the judge's ruling was appropriate?

Q3 - Christmas Decorations: According to the National Christmas Tree Association--yes, there really is such an organization--in 2004, Americans purchased 27,100,000 real Christmas trees (with an average price of $42.60) and another 9,000,000 fake trees (with an average price of $96.50) for a total of 36.1 million trees valued at $2,000,190,000.00. Do you plan on purchasing a Christmas tree this year? If so, will you be buying a real tree or a fake one?

Q4 - Cheese: What's your favorite kind of cheese? How often do you eat it?

Comments:

Q1) Incentives are good. I know I wouldn't have skipped some days if I had known I might have won a car. Unless they were giving away a Pontiac; then I would have skipped.
Q2)I think they should let everyone pray from any faith, or no one, ever.
Q3) We own a 7.5' artificial tree and love it. I'm allergic to pine sap and untreated pine cones, so I have to have the fake variety.
Q3)I have to go with very sharp cheddar. I eat it a few times a month.

A1 : Good idea. I bet more Perry Township kids would be interested in perfect attendance (and all the things associated with it) if this was offered by Hubler or Beck or Tom Wood.

A2 : as a Christian, I feel the judge's ruling was inappropriate. But, to be reasonable to people of other faiths, I would decline to offer any kind of prayer before the legislative sessions. I don't want to offend the Muslims (forbid that their radical brothers would rather kill us than figure out legislative details with us) or the athiests (who can't explain why we are here in the first place).

A3 : Fake all the way! My lovely wife has put up one of the fake trees we bought years ago.

A4 : American. Once a day if we have it.

Got mine up.

Q1 - I don't have anything against such an incentive, but I really do not see what the point is. I mean anyone can show up to school and go through the motions.

I think the emphasis should be elsewhere.

Q2 - Hallelujah! That's a no-brainer. Our constitution protects against the establishment of any one religion, the legislature should have known better.

Q3 - It's a fake tree and we're not buying a new one.

Q4 - I am pretty simple. I'd say Tillamook Cheddar. I eat it any time I can get it.

Q1: I am not a fan of awards or recognition for perfect attendance--not for school children or any age, or for employees of small, medium, or large companies for that matter. There are too many valid reasons for why someone misses school or work--like the death of a family member, being legitimately sick or ill, or for a high school students interviewing for college--for these types of awards to continue to exist. While the intention may not be there, these types of awards inappropriately differentiate and bestow rewards upon those who very well may not even--based on other factors like coming to school or work sick--be deserving in the first place.

Q2: I felt the ruling was long overdue. Religion, I feel, has no place in the legislative process.

Q3: This year I purchased a fake Christmas tree, and it's the first X-mas tree of any kind to ever be erected and decorated in a house I've lived in. It looks really nice too. I wish I had a reason to do it before!

Q4: Sharp Cheddar, and I don't eat it anymore because of the cholesterol.

Q1 - Kids and School: I feel that incentives are wrong, I donít want a sick kid coming to class and spreading their germs around just to get the car.
Q2 - Religion and Government: I didnít think that religion should be in government, but I recognize to futility in fighting it. No legislator in his right mind would vote to ban it.
Q3 - Christmas Decorations I usually have a live Christmas tree, but not this year, too busy to trim it this year. One year I had a 28í tree; it was in the entry room that has a cathedral ceiling. I trimmed it by leaning over the balcony and using a long pole where I couldnít reach. When I brought it home it stuck over the station wagon by a couple of feet on each end.
Q4 - Cheese: Munster, Gouda, Extra Sharp Cheddar, Blue Cheese, Provolone and just about any other cheese except limburger. I usually have some cheese in the house all the time.
