FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - Automobiles: A gallon of gasoline weighs just over 6 pounds. When burned, the carbon in it combines with oxygen from the air to produce nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). With that in mind, and with the price of gasoline continually on the rise, how likely is it that the next car you buy will be a hybrid?

Q2- Television: How many channels are on your television, and approximately how many of them do you watch on a somewhat regular basis?

Q3- How Are They Doing: Do you think pharmaceutical and drug companies generally do a good or bad job of serving their consumers?

Q4- Right Now: What is the closest object to your left hand?

1. Yes, if I can afford one.

2. Cable TV...hundreds, but I only watch about 10 of them regularly.

3. Probably not so good...the cost of drugs are high.

4. Black Sharpie pen.

Q1 - Hybrid: This would take some serious research to provide an educated answer. I read somewhere that burning a 60W lightbulb for 24 hours produces over 3 lbs of carbon dioxide, assuming the energy to fuel it is from a coal burning plant. A day's worth of running a waterbed heater produces 24 lbs of C02. What if we ran cars on methane gas? Methane is more effective than C02 at trapping greenhouse gases. What about hydrogen... that takes gas to produce. Is the overall process cleaner and more efficient than burning fossil fuels--not yet. Electric cars, are they better for the environment? Depends on how you produce the electricity. This is so complicated, I can't really answer it. What will happen is that when the oil runs short, something will become more affordable and perhaps cleaner or we'll all be dead, and it won't matter all that much.

Q2- Television: Too many channels with too few programs worth watching. Good thing ESPN2 has boxing, or I'd probably pitch the TV and go on a search for alternative fuels.

Q3- How Are They Doing: I think we're just beginning to see the long-term damaging effects of modern medicine and nutrition. I've seen many more sick kids now than I did when I was a kid. To me, that's the measure of success, and I think pharmaceutical companies share much of the blame.

Q4- Right Now: Closest to my left hand is a girlie magazine. What's closest to my right hand, I can't say.

1. Fairly likely, especially if the price comes down.

2. I only have over-the-air television. I think there's about eleven channels I can pull in. Of that, I watch maybe five.

3. Depends on what you mean by customers. I think that the untold millions spent on advertising to the general population (so that the sheep demand drug X over their doctor's recommendation) and providing freebies and meals to Doctors and their staffs could be better spent on education lowering the price of prescriptions.

4. Other than my mouse. that'd be a 30's vintage Cunard Line cream pitcher from either the Qheen Mary or Elizabeth that's being used as a pencil holder.

Dang it, entered my answers and then snapped the window closed before posting.

HYBRID: yes, you bet, probably not for my immediate next car, which may be a small SUV.

TV CHANNELS: i think the dial goes up to like ch 75, of which i prolly spend some amt of each week visiting maybe 40.

DRUG COMPANIES: i am quite sure i would find them to be highly corrupt if i knew more about them, but what American industries aren't littered with companies of that ilk?

LEFT HAND: beyond the keyboard, closest thing is a bird toy for my birdie Teddy.

Q1: I'd love a hybrid. It would make me feel good about myself and the environment. Though the price still needs to come down on them, and I'm sure it will a bit.

Q2: Only the broadcast channels and really I don't watch any on a regular basis...reception isn't that great.

Q3: Um...if I were to guess I'd say no.

Q4: At the time you asked it was my left cheek, that'd be the one on my face.
