FOUR FOR FRIDAY
Q1 - Thanksgiving: Eleven percent (11%) of Americans admit to unbuttoning their pants before, during, or after their Thanksgiving day meal. How about you...do you keep it buttoned up or do you enjoy a little extra room when eating a hearty meal?
Q2 - Education: How well do you think math and science is being taught in American schools?
Q3 - Politics: If you could choose the major candidates for the 2008 U.S. presidential race, who would you designate to run, and who you like to see win out?
Q4 - You're in Charge: If you could run any corporation, college or university, or organization in the world for one month, which one would you choose and what sorts of changes do you think you'd make?

Q1. Thanksgiving: So far, I haven't had to unbutton. Maybe it's because I mostly wear loose fitting shorts. ;)
Q2. Education: Probably better than a lot of other things because of No Child Left Behind only testing 4-5 major categories (where are music, art, physical education on the tests?), but still not near well enough.
Q3. Politics: Honestly, I think anyone that thinks they should be in the race ought to be banned from running. Bring in true outsiders in both parties and shake it up.
Q4. You're in Charge: I'd run the entire US Government. I'd lock every single Senator, Congressman, Cabinet Member, Advisor, the President, Supreme Court Justices, etc. in a room, and they wouldn't leave until we had a strategy plan to solve problems like balancing the budget, etc.
Q1. Thanksgiving: Who says I even wear pants to the dinner table??
Q2. Education: Absolutely not. It still astonishes me the lack of education in K-12 when it comes to Statistics. It's the only form of mathematics I use everyday.
Q3. Politics: VOTE JOHN EDWARDS! A lawyer I know...but the combination of strategic intelligence and charisma goes a long way.
Q4. You're in Charge: I'd start a large corporation whose focus was solely on micro lending within impoverished communities, domestic and international. Not only is it one of the most effective means of lifting an entire out of poverty, the juice attached and low default rate on micro loans makes it an appealing model.
1. I don't unbutton because I eat about the same amount as I do at every dinner. Stuffing myself like the turkey is totally asking for a painful bellyache. Besides, I like leftovers.
2. Very poorly. It's a wonder I still like science after those grade school teachers got through with me.
3. I'll pass on this question.
4. Hard to decide. Probably an organization dealing with health and/or the environment and try to get rid of the bureaucracy from within so something constructive could actually be done.
1. I usually eat enough to fill me up, like at any other meal, not over stuffed. I like to save room for dessert.
2. This is really sad to say, but I was trying to do long division today...and I forgot how! Shows you how much I like math (not). I think our education system needs a complete overhaul, and there should be more exploratory and experiential education so children can try a variety of things to help them decide what they want to do in the future for a career.
3. I'm not much into politics, but I agree...get some new, good blood in there. Politicians today are nuts.
4. I'd probably work for a nonprofit organization doing something to improve living conditions for people in the U.S. who live in poverty, but can be taught to end the cycle.
Q1 - Thanksgiving: I wear Spandex.
Q2 - Education: I think the educational system in the U.S. is the best in the world. The root problem with education (math, science, whatever) lies with our society--the crumbling family and our lousy values.
Q3 - Politics: Joe Biden vs. Newt Gingrich, and I'd like to see Newt win.
Q4 - I'd like to run Hamas, declare the right of Israel to exist, and establish peace with Israel. (Okay, that might take a little more than a month.)
1. I eat very lightly and I even pass up some dishes because I know they pack a whollop I don't need.
2. I think our educational system stinks. We need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what is important. We never needed to have our kids in school 6 days a week with evening study classes like the Japanese do in order to be the smartest in the world before, why do we need that and more now? The majority of kids I talk to today haven't any common sense let alone a good foundation in the 3 Rs. I don't think the old system when I was growing up was the greatest but is sure beat today and turned out fairly well rounded people who could function for themselves. Sorry, one of my soapboxes.
3. There isn't a one out there that I really think much of. I agree that I'd like to see them all fired. Then I would like to see terms limits for every political job there is and limits on what they can spend as a candidate. After that, we'd give them 2 years and if they didn't at least make a start on the things they promised as candidates, we'd be able to fire them and start over. Today they aren't for the people, they are for the power and the recognition.
4. Government! The first thing I would do is what Jeremy suggests. Then I'd implement a flat tax no person or corporation could get out of and which would get rid of the majority of one bloated bureaucracy and help toward balancing the budget. Second, I'd push through a law that you can't have any addendums (pork barrel addons) to any law. Then I'd fire myself and have the people vote on someone who is hopefully better than I am at understanding this complex world we live in and who would listen to the real experts and not some big spender or their crony. Can you tell I'm sick of the political scene but smart enough to know that I am not the answer (as no one person is)?
1 - I wore leggings and a long sweater on purpose. LOL. And I did end up eating a little too much, but one meal won't kill ya........course I did eat lightly for a few days afterward!
2 - I'll let you know as my kids progress through the school system.
3 - I can't answer this one well based on the facts because I don't know everyone's positions on enough issues, but I do like Guiliani (sp?). Not sure if I like him enough to vote for him, but I also just heard an anecdote about him and his son which made me like him more. Integrity wise.
4 - I would have to go with HP and I would streamline and unify their supply chain and spare parts organization.
Crap! I don't know how I missed this one! Here's a belated response:
1. My body isn't equipped to stuff itself. I can only eat until I'm not hungry anymore, which happens long before I'm stuffed (the one exception is when I was a Marine boot. I would be stuffed, but not anywhere near satisfied of my hunger.) Never had a need to unbutton.
2. Generally, horribly. I have an incredible interest in science, always have, but the schools I attended sure had a way of killing it for me.
3. I heard a rumor that 45% of Americans (est.) have said that they would NEVER vote for a Mormon candidate. If it's true, then that puts Mitt Romney out. In his place, I put John McCain, who I was rooting for when he primaried against Bush. His opponent: Hillary Clinton. Why? Because I'm a Republican and believe that the same 45% who would never vote for a Mormon would also never vote for a woman. But in all honesty, if I could pick anybody, I still like Bob Dole for the job and a NYC street rat as his opponent.
4. The Mormon Church, simply out of pure curiosity to see how it is all the way at the top. I'm sure after one month I'd prefer going back to my lazy, bland life. As far as changes, hopefully only the ones the Lord instructs me to make. However, I might not be able to resist the temptation to disband the Relief Society (or at the least break them up into two groups of older and younger women).
