FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - What Should He Do: A friend of mine found a dollar bill yesterday in the stairwell to our office building. What do you think he should do with it?

Q2 - Name That Town: If you could rename your town, what would you call it and why?

Q3 - Ante Up: To the best of your recollection, what is the most you have ever paid for a meal (either for yourself or for yourself and one other person), and...was it worth it?

Q4 - Fly Away: How many trips, if any, did you take on a commercial airliner in 2006? How does that compare to the amount of air travel you think you will do in 2007?

Comments:

1) He should buy M&Ms with it and put them out for all to eat. That way the person who lost the dollar will at least get something back.

2) I would name it Devonshire, so I could tell people I am from the Shire.

3) The most I have ever paid for a meal was $100 for myself and my wife at The Melting Pot. It was worth every penny.

4) I took 6 trips on a commerical airliner in 2006, which is more than usual because I got married. I will probably take less in 2007.

1. My wife found a $5 bill just outside the building yesterday. Is Somebody leaving a trail of money or something?

Anyway, she gave it to the receptionist to give to anybody who came looking for it. I told her nobody was going to waste their time looking for a lost $5 bill. So anyway, I started spreading the news up here (in case anybody had lost $5), and found out that somebody's young son had lost $5 while here the day before. That's a lot of money for a young kid, and he was pretty upset when he discovered he lost the money. While I thought nothing of it at the time, and probably would not have turned the money in myself, I'm glad now that the young boy will get his money back (if I can just convince the father to go claim it now). Perhaps that boy will grow up to be a better person from the experience. Hopefully he won't grow up thinking everybody cares only for themselves like so many of us tend to.

But a dollar? The "right" thing to do would probably be to turn it in. The justification is the same as mine: It's essentially impossible to find the original owner and he/she won't miss it anyway. So why bother? Well, after some thought I feel (and perhaps hypocritically so) that doing the "right thing", no matter how insignificant it may seem, is the appropriate thing to do.

2. Stuville, just so when I die people will continue saying my name without ever realizing why ;)

3. Right around $50 about 12 years ago... absolutely not worth it. I've never had a meal in my life (some that cost much more than $50) that was worth $50. I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on food anymore because I can't help but think of how much food it would buy the starving people in some third-world country (thank you Children's Christian Fund for putting the guilt trip on me!) And yes, this is another hypocritical thing for me because I eat out way more than I should. All those $5 meals add up pretty quick. And truth be told, if I were rich I'd be blowing my money on $100 plates left and right.

4. No flights at all for 2006. In 2007, I'll take maybe one flight for business.

1. If you find a dollar bill, you should do with it whatever your heart so desires. Finders, keepers.
2. Rifflesville, after my 4th grade teacher. We did a similar thing in the classroom and voted on a name for our new town. So, I'll go with this.
3. I've spent well over $200 on a meal a few times, at the Brown Faculty Club, at Images in the Sears Tower, and at Windows to the World in the World Trade Center. Of course, I've had many tabs well above that when drinks and wine are included.
4. I took no flights in 2006, given that I was otherwise detained for 7 months this year. I plan to take 4-6 domestic flights next year.

1. Dang. A whole dollar? When you're talking about THAT kind of capital, he should definitely make a strong effort to find the owner. If not, then he should OBVIOUSLY hire a financial planner and put that Washington to work in a stable mutual fund. I dunno, though. I've never had that kinda money, so I'm havng a hard time wrapping my imagination around spending it.

2. Paradise City, cuz then every time I tell someone where I live, I'd get questions like: "Cool! Do you know Axle Rose??"

3. Right around $100.00 at a swanky French restaurant in Houston, Texas. It was some killer good eats in an atmosphere dominated by snobbery and literally hundreds of trophy animal heads displayed with sadistic pride on the walls. I'd like to say that it was worth it based on the quality of food and the unique atmosphere alone, but I'm just not that much of a conoisseur. It would have been worth it if I ended up marrying the girl I took out, but she chose instead to break my heart into a zillion pieces later on. Ever since then, I've spent very little money on my dates. I live by a very hard-and-fast mantre: "never spend money on someone else's wife." Fortunately, the woman I ended up marrying could endure my mantre.

4. I took one business trip to San Fransisco last year. That's the extent of my air travel for '06. I predict flying to Houston next year to visit family. That should be it for '07.

1. Keep it.
2. Hickville. Not for nothing, I am not from the midwest. (no offense to anyone that is)
3. 150
4. 4 in 2006, around the same in 07'

Posted by: Stefan at December 15, 2006 11:15 AM

1. I'd keep it. Unless it was really easy to find out who lost it.

2. Due to the weather recently, Windy Junction.

3. I am a total cheap skate. I only eat out when someone else is paying.

4. This year so far--two. By next week, three. Next year, at least two.

I put my answers at my blog....

1. I like Ryan's idea, but at this time of year, I'd probably put it in Salvation Armn kettle instead.

2. Sleepytime City. For all that Indy has managed to re-image itself over the past decade, it's still a remarkably small-town, roll-up-the-sidewalk place.

3. If I remember correctly, without tip it was about $150 dollars for my meal at a co-workers going away party at Janko's Little Zagreb in Bloomington. And yes. It was worth Every. Last. Penny.

4. No air travel this year, but I'll probably take at least one flight in 2007.

1: Put the dollar in the Salvation Army bucket.
2: No idea.
3: Almost $100 at Italian place in town, it was good. Any meal that's nice, fresh, that I don't have to cook or clean up after myself is worth money. How much money -- I don't think there's a whole lotta food worth more than $100.
4: Just one, to/from FL in '06. At least two are already scheduled in 07 -- one to NY in Jan, one in Feb. to SF, CA. I'm hoping for a third time later in the year. We'll see.

1. If it would be easy to find out who lost it then at least try. Otherwise or if not claimed, the Salvation Army kettle.

2. Indy. Cause that's what I call it now.

3. $50+ at Cheesecake Factory. Well worth it.

4. 0 in 2006. Maybe 1 in 2007.

Posted by: Deb at December 16, 2006 9:11 AM

1) Use that $1.00 for the tax on a gift you might buy for "Toy's for Tot's"(a great program).

2) MARGARITAVILLE (The Obvious)

3) I had a $100 gift cert. to Ruth's Cris and ended up spending $170 (that "market price" lobster will get you every time).

4) 3 in 06 and 1 big one to CHINA in 07!!!!

Posted by: JJ at December 17, 2006 9:33 AM

1. Uh, keep it...it's just a buck.

2. If I could rename my town I'd call it Happy Town because who wouldn't want to live there? And maybe some of the people who live here would be nicer.

3. The most I've ever paid for a meal: probably close to $100, and yes, it was very much worth it. :o)

4. I flew round trip once in 2006. I think I will be taking more than one trip in 2007.

Posted by: Missy at December 17, 2006 2:28 PM

1 - I would give it to my kids for their piggy bank, unless it was in a place where the rightful owner would be easily found.

2 - Windy Island - because the rumor around here is that Brigantine is literally the windiest place in the country. I have heard that is not true, but it has to be one of them - strong winds are routine where we are - my patio furniture is regularly moving around the patio without my help. It makes bike riding here a GREAT workout! Talk about resistance!

3 - Easily around $150 for 2 of us, and worth it almost every time.

4 - None this year. We were supposed to take a trip around now, but that has been put off until next summer. So for next year it should most likely be 1 trip.

1. I like the idea of giving it to the salvation army
2. no idea.
3. I would say around $75 bucks for one at a steak house, it was good but not sure it was that good.
4. at least 30 mostly for work. Hopefully less next year.
