FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - Investing: If you had extra money to invest in 2007, where would you put it? Real Estate, the stock market, municipal bonds, a friend's start-up, in a savings account, in a hedge fund, under your mattress, in a foreign market, in U.S. savings bonds, mutual funds, precious metals, your 401K or IRA, baseball cards, or somewhere else?

Q2 - Execution: As recently as yesterday afternoon, nearly six days after it happened, U.S. President George W. Bush steadfastly denied having seen the video of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's execution. Do you believe him?

Q3 - Gays in the Military: A recent poll from Zogby International shows that U.S. military personnel are increasingly at ease serving with openly gay colleagues. The poll reveals that 73 percent of military members are not bothered by lesbians and gays serving alongside them. Nearly one in four (23 percent) service members polled reported knowing for certain that someone in their unit is lesbian or gay, including 21 percent of those in combat units. Do you feel gay people should be allowed to serve in the U.S. military, and despite what you believe, has you opinion on this matter changed any over the last 5-10 years?

Q4 - Movie: What was the last movie you saw, and would you recommend that I take my Mother to see it?

Comments:

Q1: I would invest in my own Graphic Design business and maybe invest in some safe stocks. Maybe buy a fixer-up house and rent it?
Q2: I believe Bush did not watch the video. I think he has gotten an earful from others..why bother. {what a mess that whole thing was... just like the Iraq War is}
Q3: My thoughts have not changed over the years. People are people and none of us are perfect. Gay, purple or polka-dots should serve anywhere if they want to. Somehow I wish this topic would die away.
Q4: I have not seen a movie in years. I read. I think your Mom might be bored with the books I read{?}.

1. Depends on the amount of extra money I have. I might either put the whole thing on 17-black in Vegas, or put it in a money market account.

2. I tend to not believe much of what comes out of the mouths of politicians, but my guess is that he hasn't seen it.

3. If somebody wants to serve, I say let them! Nobody is telling terrorists, "Gee, you can't be a suicide bomber because you're too old," or "You're missing a limb, forget it." I understand that someone who is not physically fit can be a threat to his/her unit or his/her fellow soldiers. But there's got to be something we can find for these hard-core disabled folks to do! As for gays... my father served in the Navy back in the '60's. He says when you first boarded a new ship, one of the first things you learned was who the gay sailors were. Few people cared in the '60's that there were gays in the military. I don't think anybody who's serious about serving their country cares now. I don't approve of the lifestyle, but it's not my place to tell a gay person they can't serve. And frankly, I'd be proud to serve with anyone, gay or otherwise, that's willing to make the sacrifice. My opinion on the matter has changed very little over the last 10 years.

4. Ummm... I think it was "Grandma's Boy." A coworker [did that thing where he lets you have something for awhile, then you give it back] it to me. I most definitely would not recommend that you [do that thing where you watch something, like a movie] with your mother... or anybody else's mother for that matter.

Sorry for the bracketed comments. I guess I speak a spammy language.

Q1 - Investing: I always tell my wife that I want to buy gold bouillon. And then some land in Idaho or Wyoming. And then guns to protect both. Pretty good strategy I think.

Q2 - Execution: No way. He watched it. So did I. And I thought it was handled very poorly, it was like thugs doing it, rather than a sovereign government. Iraq is jack forked as I like to say.

Q3 - Gays in Military: I think they should be allowed to serve. We're all big people. And yes, my opinion has changed over the last 5-10 years, I've become 'smarter' in some of my thinking.

Q4 - Movie: I saw My Super Ex-Girlfriend with my wife. It was only OK, so I wouldn't recommend it.

1. I'm looking to expand my company, so I'd probably put it there, hiring and training new sales people. Otherwise, I'd sink some more money in to real estate.
2. Yes, I think he watched it. How could you not??
3. Yes, gays & lesbians should serve openly. They already do so in most of the rest of the industrialized nations. My opinion has not changed on this issue at all. Not surprising, given that I, myself, am a gay man.
4.The last movie I saw, 2 nights ago on HBO Comedy, was "The Aristocrats," the documentary about the dirtiest joke ever told. I would NOT recommend it to MY mother, but, Mikal's mother may enjoy it, at least parts of it.

1. Depending on the amount I had to play with: I'd go with a foreign market mutual fund or one of my Merchant Of Death stocks and place at least some if it in my 401 (k). If I had a more substantial amount, real estate.

2. At this point, I don't think I'd believe him (without checking for myself)if he said that water is wet. However, given that his staffers had to compile video of the Katrina devastation for him to watch (presumably so his delicate ears wouldn't be assaulted by media criticism of his administration's abysmal response) it's probably a bit plausible.

3. Yes, they should be allowed to serve, and no, my position hasn't changed. I've always felt that it has been an artificial wedge issue trotted out so that politicians can throw a bone to the nut-case fringe and somehow 'prove' their conservative credentials.

4. Either The Queen, or Driving Lessons. And yeah, I'd recommend either of them.

1) 401K, hands down. That's one of my goals for this year, so I'm not grovelling on the streets when I'm 65.

2) Are you serious? Do I believe anything that jerkwad says?

3) Yes my opinion has changed because in the last 10 years, I left my conservative Christian parents to create life on my own, and I realized how ridiculous I think organized religion is. And yes, I think they should be allowed to serve -- I don't think it's anyone's damn business what others do sexually. Maybe if conservatives would focus on their own lives and problems, we wouldn't have so many problems with divorce resulting from years of hidden lies etc. I'm just riffin here, but really I do have some intelligent arguments against the bigoted viewpoint.

4) HA. that's all I have to say. actually, i saw the holiday last in the theater, and I don't recommend it to anyone. It's probably the cutest mainstream flick I've seen in a while, but I never, ever recommend any mainstream movies to anyone who has any creativity or an intellectual cell in his/her body. Take her to see Borat, if anything. Otherwise, get a good independent flick from the library and watch it at home. If you need suggestions, I have a whole host of them.

1 - China, China, China
2 - Of course he saw it. Wouldn't you want to see the execution of the person who tried to assisinate your father!?
3 - Why not? My opinion has never changed on this subject.
4 - 'Little Miss Sunshine' Excellent show for the Madre, or anyone else for that matter, to see.

1. My retirement IRAs.

2. I doubt he saw it. He isn't much for TV from what I hear.

3. Anyone who wants to serve and possibly die for my country is welcome to do so. No change in that.

4. Pride & Prejudice--the one made in England with Colin Firth. The better of the 3 out there. Yes, anyone could watch it. It wasn't too bad.

Posted by: Deb at January 6, 2007 12:53 PM

1. If I had any extra money, I'd invest it in retirement savings. Don't want to be working forever.

2. I think he did watch it, or at least saw photos of him when it was over. He's the President of the United States, he purposely went into Iraq to get rid of Saddam, I think he'd want to make sure the guy was really dead.

3. Oh please, who really gives a crap if someone in the miliary is gay? I bet there are hundreds of men and women who are already serving who are in the closet. It makes no difference to me who serves, as long as they serve by choice.

4. Hmm...can't remember the last movie I saw, but it was probably a romantic comedy, so yeah, I'd recommend it to your mother.

Q1 - Investing: I would send my daughter to flight school. We have a tiny local airport where pilots provide flight lessons. I think she would love it and it would be an investment to last a lifetime.

Q2 - Execution: Nope. I think the whole Bush family probably sat around the big-screen, HDTV and cheered. Personally, I was a little happy to see the guy leave this world. He did worse things than watch people die on the tellie.

Q3 - Gays in the Military: Gays should be allowed to serve in the military but not in the navy... too many sea men... and if you read my response to the next question, you'll know why my sense of humor is in the gutter. But seriously, I have no problem with gays in the military. They have a right to die, just like everyone else.

Q4 - Movie: Just saw Clerks II. No, I wouldn't recommend that you take your mother to it.

Posted by: Joba at January 6, 2007 2:33 PM

Q1 Thinking of my family, mostly my child, I would set up an account so when she grows up, she has some money waiting for her to use; hopefully for school. I actually have something set up similar to that, but not as...organized.

Q2 I would think that he has seen it. I know if I invested that much time, money, life and trust into the ending the Saddam era, then I would most definitely look at it. So, yes, I think he actually viewed it.

Q3 Gay people are...still people. If they choose to enrole in defending their country and ours, go for it. I have no problem with any type of person defending the country I live, love and believe in as long as they follow orders that back what our nation stands for.

Q4 I saw Invincible with Mark Wahlberg. Great show for anyone who has dreamed of well...following their hopes and dreams. Doesn't have to be football like in the movie. I do have to say that I will be pursuing my destiny in becoming a rock and roll star. Keep an eye out. Yes, you can take your mother to the movie and my concert when it comes to a city near you. Thanks for the Water Mikal!

Q1 - Investing: Well, as a stay at home mom, extra money is just a dream. If I had extra money, I'd plug it into a IRA or CD for retirement.
Q2 - Execution: Don't believe him. This is coming from a man who pulled the truth to start the war in the beginning? I would be surprised if he hadn't had a live feed to the event.
Q3 - Just because they are gay, doesn't mean they can't do their job. Period. Who cares? My opinion hasn't changed over the years. I frankly don't give a crap if someone is purple, gay, and likes to sleep upside down. I don't agree with many people about their lifestyles choices. But, it's not my life. You have to respect the choices others make for themselves and move on.
Q4 - Movie: I last saw Cars. So yes--You can take your mother too it. It's a cute movie with a little lesson in it too.

Posted by: Twirp at January 7, 2007 3:20 PM

1. For retirement or for the college fund of my non-existent kid.

2. No. He probably saw it.

3. If someone wants to serve in the military and they are able to, then just let them. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with job performance.

4. The latest Bond flick, [title omitted because your commenting system thinks it's spam]. Of course I would recommend you take your mother. I took mine.

1. I invest a good portion of my exta money into my wife's business. The monetary returns so far have been pretty insubstantial, but it makes her happy, and I don't think you can put a price on that. I don't know if happy wife always equals happy husbund, but I can tell you that unhappy wife will always equal miserable husband.

2. I don't beleive it for a second. Of course, there's a lot of things he chooses to tell the public that I don't beleive. IMO it would be irresponsible of him NOT to watch it. After all, the method in which it was handled should give him an idea of how the government there is functioning--something he should be very concerned about if he ever wants us to successfully exit Iraq.

3. I think that gays should most definitely be able to serve. My opinion hasn't changed on that. However, I have to admit that that's a pretty easy thing to say since I don't serve in the military.

4. The last movie I saw in the theater was The Holiday. I have no idea what your mother's taste in movies is, but I think my mother would have enjoyed it. My wife definitely did.
