FOUR FOR FRIDAY - THE BATHROOM EDITION

Q1 - The Bathroom Door: When you're home alone and find that it's time to use the bathroom, do you shut the bathroom door, or do you leave it open?

Q2 - Door Number Two: We've all seen them...unisex bathrooms in restaurants or in the workplace that have both a urinal and a separate toilet surrounded by a stall, all behind a lockable door. Assuming you lock the door to the bathroom (which I'm guessing every sane/reasonable human being does), if you choose to use the toilet inside of the stall, do you also lock the stall door, or do you leave it unlocked?

Q3 - Under or Over: According to a physics professor quoted by Ann Landers, to get (the toilet paper roll) to turn requires a certain torque, which comes from the tension in the paper being withdrawn. The greater the distance between the plane of the paper being pulled and the axis support line, the lesser the force required and the lesser the chance of tearing the paper before you have enough. Which camp are you in: Should the toilet paper be hung so the paper dangles over or under the roll?

Q4 - Keeping It Clean: How often do you clean your bathroom? When you do clean it, do you clean certain parts--like the toilet or the sink or the shower/tub--at various times, or do you like to get the whole job done in one sitting (no pun intended)?

Comments:

1. I leave it open.

2. I leave it open. I try to not touch anything in public bathrooms. Really, I'm quite annoyed that there is even a door there.

3. Over. I didn't used to care, but right around November of 1995, I discovered it's substantially easier to get your toilet one-handed when it's over.

4. Umm... not sure. My wife handles that. I hope the full deal is done at least once a week. If I lived alone, I'd probably do it about once a month.

As a side note: If you ever want to get over any anxieties you have about using public bathrooms, join the Corps. For a platoon of abot 60 men, there are maybe a dozen urinals and fewer toilets, all without stalls for privacy. Imagine 60 men being given 30 seconds to relieve themselves. Three to a urinal was pretty standard.

1. I, too leave it open.

2. Again, I leave the stall door open. Unisex restrooms cheese me off a bit though. I don't see them as "progressive" or "edgy" so much as a way for a store or restaurant to inconvenience paying customers so that they can squeeze in one more rack of clothes or another four-top.

3. Under. Definitely under.

4. Sink/toilet/tub get cleaned every 2-3 weeks, or when I notice the hard water deposit and soap scum building up. The rest of the room (mirror, floor, etc)gets hit irregularly, and only when necessary.

1) I always leave it open. Sometimes you need all the ventilation you can get.

2) I usually lock the stall door just because it swings open if you don't and can get in the way. I like plenty of space.

3) I like it hanging over the roll so if it is torn short, you can still see where the end is without having to spin the roll.

4) My bathroom gets cleaned a full deep clean each month with a lighter cleaning every week. You don't want too much stuff to start growing in there.

First of all, I can't believe Stuart's wife cleans the bathroom for him. WOW. That is love.

Herewith, my answers:

1. Closed. With the water running.

2. I may have seen one of these weird scenarios once if my life, if at all. But I would probably feel the need to knock down the inner walls. Or else pretend they're not there and just leave the door open.

3. Are you kidding me?! OVER. Not even a question. And if I'm in a friend's house and it's under, I switch it. Maybe I should have a nickname for that. The TP Flipper.

4. Um. Used to once a week. Now, uh, a little more time in between the cleanings. But always, always at once. Unless it's been a really long time, and then the pot gets the scrubbing on her own.

Mikal, do tell.

1) I close it, with the fan on (although I know it exacerbates the global warming problem.) Keeping the door closed helps eliminate "odor control problems" (which is how we would tell a business owner their bathroom stinks when I sold janitorial supplies.)

2) If unisex, the outside door is locked, and the stall.
If it's a men's room, and I use the stall, I leave the outer door unlocked. I feel the stall door (which must be closed for the sake of space) is a sufficient barrier between me and my urinal-using brethren.

3) Over. I think over gives the sense that the TP coming toward you, which is very positive since I'm getting what I want.
Under makes me feel like the TP is trying to get away, very discouraging...

4) My wife does the thorough cleaning at least once per week. However since we have a seven year-old boy with questionable aim, we both take part in regular wipe-downs. I think it's also important to note that when cleaning the bathroom, start with the mirror, then sinks/tub, and THEN the toilet. It's amazing how many people don't clean in this order.
I'll bet they're 'under' people.

1. I love the bathroom theme! Shoot, I leave the door open even when my family's around. I only close it for guests (the collective world breathes a huge sigh of relief) and when Olivia, my 11-month-old daughter, tries to come in. I am a strong proponent of the open-door policy.

2. We have one of those unisex bathrooms at work, and closing and locking the stall door is a definite no-brainer. For some reason, my co-employees try to barge in all the time, even though they see the light on under the door (They even try to barge in on me when they can hear me washing my hands). Sheesh, doesn't anyone believe in knocking before entering? Anyway, that stall door provides an added layer of security in the unlikely and rather frightening event that I'd forgotten to lock the main door. I think of it as my little cocoon inside of a cocoon.

3. Over, which isn't to say that I always hang the roll that way. For some reason, as much as I'm annoyed at ALL the extra effort required in reaching UNDER the roll, I usually forget to hang the roll over. Then I don't care enough to change it. It's a strange, screwed-up world I live in over here in Neal-topia.

4. I'd probably better not admit how many times I clean the bathrooms, but my wife stays on top of it pretty well. I'm definitely a thorough top-to-bottom type of bathroom cleaner, though. My wife focuses on the areas that need it most.

My answers are up on my blog. GREAT theme, though!

By the way, in response to the comment about order of bathroom cleaning, I clean the toilet first because I want to rinse the brush off thoroughly under running water in the tub and let it drip-dry a little before I put it back in it's little house. So if I did the toilet last, I'd have to rewash the tub. :-)

You're so funny Mikal! OK, here goes, my first Five For Friday.

1. I am the mother of a three year old. Every time I shut any door she immediately opens it. She has no concept of privacy. So, I always go the the bathroom with the door open.

2. I've never noticed what I do, but, knowing me, I would lock both doors.

3. I'm a TP over the roll kind of gal. Isn't that something passed down from mother to child?

4. Our bathroom gets cleaned once a week--by my housecleaner. I haven't cleaned a bathroom in over a year and I'll never look back!

Q1 - The Bathroom Door: What bathroom? I just tinkle outside.

Q2 - Door Number Two: I must say that I have never had the pleasure of using such a bathroom. I've been in bathrooms with urinals and enclosed stalls, but they've always been marked "Men." Admittedly, I don't get out much. I was in a Men's bathroom once, using the urinal next to an enclosed stall, when I heard a woman's voice coming out of the stall telling me not to worry, that she wouldn't peek... or was it "wouldn't peak?"

Q3 - Under or Over: Definitely over.

Q4 - Keeping It Clean: My wife and daughter usually get to this job before I do, thank goodness, but when I clean, I do the entire job at one "sitting." My parents owned a catering business--two bathrooms. A men's with 3 stalls and 3 urinals and a woman's with 4 stalls. I cleaned both every Saturday and Sunday morning and on Monday mornings when I didn't have school from the time I was 8 years old till I left home at 17. I figure I put in my time. By the way, the women's bathroom was always filthier than the men's with the exception of nights when there were all men at the party.

Bathroom tip for women: My wife puts a Rolling Stone magazine on top of the flush box, so I can't possibly leave the seat up.

1. When I'm home alone, I just swing it shut, and if it latches, fine, but I don't lock it. If no one is home, then there's no chance of anyone coming in while I'm in there. I grew up in a house with several sisters and one main bathroom with a shower, so there was always the chance of more than one sister being in there at the same time for different purposes. And then on some occasions I close and lock it just for the heck of it, even if I'm alone in the house.

2. I haven't been in too many unisex bathrooms, but I would definitely lock the main door, and then use the stall (since women can't use urinals). I would lock the stall door too, just out of habit.

3. T.P. ROLL. MUST. HANG. OVER.

4. I usually clean the toilet/sink area more often than the shower. But when I get ambitious, I clean everything. I like the feeling of a clean, sparkling bathroom.

Cute Mikel.

1. Closed

2. Close both--I was once walked in on by someone who was given a key.

3. Over in my bathroom. Mom likes it under.

4. I wipe down the sink and countertop every day in my half-bath. Clean the rest very thoroughly once a week. Mom takes care of the main bath. The shower in there gets cleaned every couple of weeks.

1. Sometimes I close the door. Soemtimes I leave it open. I often wonder, when I do close the door, why I do so, when no one is around.
2. I always close & lock the stall door, even in the assurance of a locked bathroom door. It's a habit, I guess. I LOVE unisex bathrooms, by the way.
3. Ah, a classic question. I prefer that the paper rolls over the top. In fact, I routinely switch the position at my folks' house so it rolls OVER the top when I am using the bathroom at their home. Does this beahvior require or suggest a mental health consultation?
4. I routinely, as in "after-every-time I use it," wash/wipe the sink & toilet, but I almost never clean my bathroom. It's not that I'm disgusting, it's just that I usually pay someone to do that, usually once a month. It's a great use of $40 and the whole house smells and looks good.

1. Open whenever alone. The dogs don't seem to mind.
2. Lock everything I can. Not a big fear but why take the risk?
3. I answered this Four For just to address this...ALWAYS OVER!!! I can't understand why anyone would ever do otherwise...with paper towels too. Few things I am passionate about. This is one of them.
4. I wipe the toilet down frequently but rarely do an all out cleaning. It stays pretty clean though...at least to the eye. This will change though as now I have regular maid service which starts this week. Hear that ladies? Cmon over...my bathroom is now cleaned regular.

1 - Unless there are visitors, it's usually open. If it's not locked, the kids would open it anyhow. If it's open they could care less but if it's closed it's like an invitation to see what you're doing.

2 - Lock both.

3 - Has to be over, drives me nuts under, always have to search for it. However, haven't yet been able to teach my husband that the rolls, when replaced go ON the holder, not on the top of the toilet. Thankfully, the kids insist on it. LOL

4 - The floor gets cleaned the most often - by all of the soapy water my kids splash out. I look at it as a good cleaning routine. LOL. The toilet bowl is my husband's job, but seems like I'm haveing to take it over since it's not done enough for my liking......I prefer clean bowls with nothing growing in them. He did keep them clean during my last pregnancy when I was sick in them daily and threatened him. LMAO j/k. I would say once a week to once every other week for the whole thing at once. I tend to wipe things down regularly and do bits at a time rather than one cleaning day - who has time to do a whole house at once?

I want to know where Lee lives where it only costs $4o to have someone come clean the house! LOL

And when is Mikal going to answer these things? LOL ;)

Unbelievable...I was always under the impression that bathrooms got cleaned twice a week and the floors once a week. At least that's the way I was raised and anyone I have ever asked agreed with me. Maybe they are just like the people here and just didn't want to tell me different. Maybe I am the odd one out. I am waiting for a double lung transplant and have an autoimmune disease so I think I should stick to what's being done now which is once a week though I would like it done twice. (I'm not the one who has to do the work though so I really don't have much of a say in it anymore}.
