FOUR FOR FRIDAY--THE SUMMER EDITION

Q1 - Summer Movies: Which movies are you most looking forward to seeing this summer... Lucky You, Spider-Man 3, 28 Weeks Later, Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Day Watch, Mr. Brooks, Knocked Up, Ocean's Thirteen, Surf's Up, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Evan Almighty, A Mighty Heart, Live Free or Die Hard, Evening, Ratatouille, Sicko, Transformers, Rescue Dawn, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, 1408, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Hairspray, Goya's Ghosts, The Simpsons Movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, Becoming Jane, Rush Hour 3, Stardust, The Invasion, Good Luck Chuck, or Halloween 9?

Q2 - Summer Vacation: Are you planning to take a summer vacation? If so, where you are going? If not, where would you go if you were taking a summer vacation?

Q3 - Summer Jobs: Growing up, did you ever have a summer job? If so, what were the best and worst summer jobs you had?

Q4 - Summer Travel: Last week, the Denver Post published an article tallying a host of problems that might only worsen by the higher number of airplane travelers this summer, including that the nation's outdated air traffic control system might be overwhelmed; pilots may refuse to work overtime which may cause more cancellations; and, with most flights flying at or near capacity, there might be no open seats on other flights should yours be canceled or delayed. At the same time, some airlines have said that starting this summer they will charge between $15 and $25 extra to air travelers who wish to request aisle or exit-row seats. Are the airlines nickel and dimming you to death or is it about time we started paying extra for better meals and specific seats in coach?

Q1 - Summer Movies. Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ocean's Thirteen, Live Free or Die Hard, Harry Potter, Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3

Q2 - Summer Vacation. Yes, going to Italy with my wife.

Q3 - Summer Jobs. Yes, started when I was 12 basically managing my neighbor's farm while he went to rodeos all summer. Fought forest fires for the BLM, worked for Del Monte driving Pea Harvestors, worked construction. Didn't ever have a worst job, I liked them all.

Q4 - Summer Travel. Bottom line: charge me what you need for my fare to make money, don't try to make money by charging me 30 other fees. Although a fare for a better seat, makes sense.

1. Summer Movies: I'm a huge Marvel Comics fan, so I'm really looking forward to Fantastic Four. Transformers I'm also very excited about, though I've heard rumours they jacked up all the real famous Transformers.

2. Summer Vacation: I usually do my vacation in February or March, so probably nothing this summer.

3. Summer Jobs: Nope, never did have a summer job. I had friends that went to Hawaii to pick pineapples though.

4. Summer Travel: That's a tough call. But I have to admit, everytime I hear about union workers whining and crying, I just shake my head and wonder what's become of work ethic and pride. That aside, based on what I've heard airlines are losing lots of money, so maybe prices do need to go up. I'd rather they just charge extra for "better seats" or whatever the case may be rather than raise prices across the board. I say go for it.

q1: pirates, rush hour 3, harry potter, bourne ultimatum
q2: yes, st. george and then somewhere else too (tbd)
q3: hucking melons (picking water melons out of the field and loading them into the truck) - good; 3 am milking cows - bad
q4: they're killing me

1) Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Ratatouille, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

2) Yep, we're headed for the Lone Star State (Texas to the lame man. I'm sorry, did I say lame man? I meant lay man). We'll be spending most of our time water-skiing and what-not on the shores of Lake Conroe, but we'll probably swing by to San Antonio for a day or two to take in the River Walk and Sea World.

3) My worst summer job is a toss-up between a full- time, cold-call telemarketing gig in California and running my own lawn mowing business in Houston in the middle of summer. My best summer job was working the info desk in the Wilkinson Center (the student center) at Brigham Young University. It made a great perch from which a single guy could scope the BYU co-eds. MmmmmmÖhmmmm!

4) I understand that the airlines needs to cover their expenses, but for heaven's sakes. My dad just paid $1400 bucks for three regional flight tickets, and he bought them four months in advance. That's screwed up.

1. I am so lame. I didn't even know half of those movies were coming out. I haven't been to the movie theater in ages. So, so sad. After reviewing the list, I am most excited for the Bourne Ultimatum and Harry Potter. However, if we are talking about summer releases, the BIGGEST excitement is the final Harry Potter book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. I am going to Lake Mead in July which should be exciting. However, my life is pretty much a vacation all the time given that I live a block from the beach. So, I might just take some time off work and enjoy the HB lifestyle!

3. I worked for a Juice Shop and Limited Too. Limited Too was much better!

4. That is the lamest thing I have ever heard. The seating choice is half the reason you book your flight early. Flying has become such a pain.

Q1 - Summer Movies: I have a few favorite movies I always look forward to watching again and again: Goodfellas, Barfly, Pulp Fiction, and The Dear Hunter.

Q2 - Summer Vacation: No summer vacation. If we were going to take a summer vacation, we would probably go to Bemidji and Becida, Minnesota to visit friends... or maybe to Orem, Utah. I have a good friend who lives there.

Q3 - Summer Jobs: My worst summer job was as a maintenance man at a nursing home. The job itself wasn't bad, but about 2 weeks into the job I spent two months getting, the staff went on strike. I wasn't about to give up my paying job, so I was one of the scabs. Little old ladies who were calling me such a sweet and responsible lad only a week earlier were now cursing at me as I crossed the picket lines. Once the strike was over, they were nice to me again. Weird.

Q4 - Summer Travel: I don't really understand the root cause, but I think I agree most with Jeremy on this one--charge however much you need to stay in business, pay your people a decent wage, and earn a fair profit.

1. I haven't given much thought to summer movies yet, but I'm sure to see Spiderman 3. I just love Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" sounds interesting.

2. I just got back from vacation and plan to return to RI, NYC, and maybe Atlanta by summer's end.

3. Summer jobs: After I graduated from high school, I spent the summer as a merchandiser for Coca-Cola, thru a temp agency, in Florida, working Thu - Sun and spending the rest of the week at the beach. I stayed with my aunt & uncle in Pensacola, FL and enjoyed the beautiful white sand. I interned for Sen. Jack Danforth (R-MO) the summer of 1990, living in a Georgetown apartment with 2 other Brown friends, in Washington, DC. Mikal, that was the summer of the now infamous Santa Barbara van trip across the border that was the impetus for the urination & ID story.

4. We have too much protection and too many fees already just for the supposed extra safety after the 9-11 attacks. I'd trade a little less safety for faster and shorter lines and less pat-downs.

1. Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Ocean's Thirteen, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Transformers, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Simpsons Movie, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

2. McCall, Idaho. My grandparents have a large ranch up there, making for a perfect escape from my current day to day.

3. The worst was definitely letter opener. I vowed never to work for another temp agency again. The best has to be when I was a ranch foreman for my grandparent's ranch.

4. I'm taking the train.

1. I am so excited for Harry Potter!! Why wasn't that on the list? It is just my luck that Doba is paying my way in. No waiting in line either!

2. I have no defianlty plans, but hope to join my mom in Florida. I have a lot of family there, including my grandparents.

3. I have always worked for my parents in the summer, and still do. They direct mountain bike races. I have also worked at a Dry Cleaners.

4. I am not sure that I like the idea of paying extra for an aisle or a window seat. Paying extra for food never bothered me because I never ate it anyway. But I do not think that pilates are paid even, so I am fine paying so extra fees.

My answers are posted at my blog, including a rant about the airlines.

Posted by: Cat. at May 4, 2007 5:19 PM

1. Pirates and Harry Potter, mostly.

2. No vacation this summer, but if I did, I'd head back to Belize.

3. Ugh! Detasseling corn and putting up hay. Hay was the worst becasue we did it for my Brother in Law and got paid in beer. Honestly--how much beer can a fourteen year old drink, anyway?

4. Yes, they are kinda nickel and diming everyone, but I'd have no problem paying to get a guaranteed seat of my choice. It'd certainly stop people from complaining about their seats or meals though. If you don't request and pay for it, you can't complain about the seat you get or the lack of the generally inedible meal.

Q1 - Shrek the Third! My kids can't wait and the first two were pretty funny! Not sure what the others were, but my kids have also been asking to go see the new Spiderman, but I think it looks a little too scary for them - they're still pretty young.

Q2 - I promised my soon to be ex I'd bring the kids down to TX to see him this summer. So I guess I'm headed down to outside Austin. I do plan to leave them all there for a few days and escape to Houston on my own to see people. LOL

Q4 - Who knows what to believe anymore. If the airlines are doing so poorly financially, why isn't something being done to help them run more efficiently? Of course, it always comes down to the consumer...

Mikal, why aren't you answering anymore?
