FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - Books and Movies: When a movie that is based on a book is about to be released--like "Into the Wild," which is scheduled to open nationwide in early-October--do you try to read the book first or do you believe in the separation of books and movies?

Q2 - Dancing: Do you feel comfortable dancing in public, like at weddings or holiday parties? If not, would you be willing to take lessons and then try dancing in public, or is the thought of dancing in public just so unappealing that lessons aren't even a possibility?

Q3 - I Want That: If you were able to own or have one thing that a friend, colleague, or neighbor has, what would it be?

Q4 - Public Funds: The senior pastor at an Indianapolis-based Baptist church is publicly objecting the placement of special sinks that would aid Muslims (at the Indianapolis airport) in preparing for prayer because he opposes what he calls "the fraternization with our open enemies during a time of war." The sinks, which are set to be installed near a parking lot where Muslim taxi drivers wait between runs, would aid Muslims in washing their feet in preparation for ritual prayers. Despite what the pastor thinks, do you feel it is appropriate to use taxpayer funds for the support of a single religion?

Comments:

1) Always read the book first, because it is going to be better than the movie and you can create your own movie in your head as you read.

2) I am fine with dancing in public. It is not my favorite activity, but get a few root beers in me and look out!

3) Moxy

4) I don't think public funds should be used to support a single religion because if you do it for one, you have to do it for all and that is just not possible. If I started a religion that required full body massages every day at noon, do you think they would install tables at the airports? Neither do I.

q1: I don't go running to read the book first. In fact I've seen all Harry Potter movies before reading the books so far.
q2: I feel completely comfortable dancing or at holiday parties. Sometimes my wife doesn't really want to dance with me at parties though (nothing against my dancing I'm sure).
q3: I'd like Jake's Harley.
q4: The pastor's comments are off base, but I don't support the use of tax funds to support any single religion.

Q1 - I watch the movie first, and read the book later. Having a visual to draw upon helps me retain the story, and to delve into it deeper, than just having the words to go by. Books are inherently more detailed than movies, for the obvious reason that movies have a time limit, and books don't. I love when authors embellish on what the movie portrays.

Q2 - I haven't been invited to a wedding or a party for so long that I don't know how to answer. I'm not out to win a prize for best dancer evar, but I don't mind risking looking like a fool as I jiggle my body, as long as I'm in a group and can either blend in or copy movements. lol

Q3 - I want the same job as the apartment leasing agent. Those who know of my trials and tribulations about mine have heard me gripe that I want her job, but they may not know that I'm quite serious. I think I'd be really good at it.

Q4 - Not all taxi drivers are Muslim, and not all Muslims are taxi drivers. I don't feel it appropriate for taxpayer funds to be used for a single stereotype. If the sinks were funded by a special interest organization or by some private entity, and the airport agreed to the installation of these facilities, then I have no concern over whether they're there or not. However, if taxpayer funds are being used for these sinks, then I also believe they should be used for curbside Eucharist tables, Wiccan and pagan altars, and Davey Jones lockers for Pastafarians. If you cater to one religion, you must cater to them all.

As for the pastor's opinion on a religion that is not his own, he can go stuff his head in a bucket of water.

Ah ha! Here it is. I been waiting several hours for this!

1. Books and Movies: Well, I only read books that I'm interested in, so no. And, since the movie rarely has any semblance to the book, there isn't a whole lot of point to it (Dune being the exception... unless you read the book, the movie made absolutely no sense!)

2. Dancing: If I'm among close friends, sure I'll dance and make a fool of myself. It's pretty rare though.

3. I Want That: My boss' huge house in Vegas. I'll covet his house, but not his wife, manservant, maidservant, ox, or donkey ;)

4. Public Funds: The pastor's reasoning is way off the mark, but taxpayers obviously should not be paying to support any religion.

Q1- I place no extra effort in trying to read the book first. If the movie appeals to me and/or gets decent reviews from those I trust, then I'll usually view it as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Q2- I'm a white boy, never known for my skills on the floor. I have danced in public at weddings and other events, usually slower songs. No chance ever on lessons, better things to do.

Q3- Probably the stock that my buddy as amassed in his company over the past couple years. He's basically retired now at 28.

Q4- Public funds spent on an item to cater to a specific religion is fully stupid. If indeed that is true, then I'm against it.

1 Books and Movies: Since I am still in school, I have to say that my reading for entertainment is non-existent. So, I just go see the movie and never worry about what I may have missed in the book.

2 Dancing: I don't dance at weddings, but I do like dancing at actual dances. I feel awkward at a venue that everyone didn't come to just for dancing.

3 I Want That: I've got a friend with a super nice Nikon D80 digital camerea. I really want that Mikal!!

4 Public Funds: Using tax dollars I have a problem with. But, setting up the sinks is fine, if the Muslims fork out the money for it. I would expect the same treatment for any other religion as well.

1. I think I would read the book after watching the movie if the movie was good. I've read "into thin air" and enjoyed it, but this looks pretty cool too. I may watch and read. Screenplay by Sean Penn? I can only think of Spicole from Fast Times coming out of his van in a haze of bong smoke.

2. I Dance in public, but I would be a little hesitant to be the first to hit the dancefloor unless I was dressed for it (velvet and polyester blends). I would take lessons. Maybe cha cha.

3. I don't want for nothin.
4. I disagree with the pastor's approach, but I agree that since no other religion is singled out in the funds use (which is a state issue too [separation of church and state])then this project should not be paid as such. If the Catholic church was cool and practiced more of what they preach, why don't they fund raise for a project like this to create some bonding rather than friction.

1. Reading before the movie: I like to be surprised by a movie. So I usually wait till after the movie to read the book. But just because I watch the movie doesn't mean that I will read the book. However, if I read the book I will almost assuredly see the movie.

2. Dancing: When I was young and in High School I didn't mind making a fool of myself on the dance floor. Now, I am more influenced by my peers and I would fear their ridicule. But if my wife asked me to, I would do it for her. Lucky me, she hates dancing. I took a few dance classes in college. It was fun. I would take some more if my wife would do it with me.

3. I want that: I would like Elwon's chest hair that pokes out of the top of his shirt.

4. Public Funds: I am more of a Free Capitalist. I don't really believe in Government subsidies. The wash room should only be created if it is funded by a private organization. In fact I think that the Government should get its fumbling hands out of all airports and let private businesses take over. I believe they would do a better job.

Q1 - Books and Movies: I watch the movie first for two reasons. 1) If I read the book first, I'm usually disappointed by the movie. & 2) By watching the movie, I get a general idea of the plot and characters, and then when I read the book, I can fill in all the details.

Q2 - Dancing: I'm somewhat comfortable dancing in public, although I think I'm not very good at it. Not sure about dancing lessons. I tried them once and even felt worse about my dancing.

Q3 - I Want That: A vacation.

Q4 - Public Funds: I think we should tolerate all religions, not cater to them. As much flack as Christians take in our society for displaying religious icons, why should we be installing prayer-preparation sinks for Muslims? It's absurd. Can't they use wet wipes?

Posted by: Joba at September 21, 2007 2:59 PM

1. If I haven't read the book yet, then it is usually too late. I just go see the movie and get to the book when I can, which usually doesn't happen.

2. I dance whenever possible. Life's too short to worry about others.

3. I'd really like a stress free job like the window washers that come around the office once a month. They just listen to music to squidgy windows. Looks like a life.

4. Hey, the sinks double as an aid for midgets so I have no problem with that. Midgets have a bad wrap anyway.

My responses are posted on my site.

Posted by: JHS at September 22, 2007 12:48 AM

1. If it's a book I've read before, I'll read it again before seeing the movie. If I haven't read it before, I usually read it after watching the movie.

2. Dancing in public doesn't bother me. I figure that most of the people don't know me well enough to care what I look like. If it's something like a tango or a foxtrot though, I'd probably need lessons or I'd be a menace on the floor.

3. Nothing.

4. I don't feel it's appropriate for tax dollars to be used to support any religion. That being said, our tax dollars already being used (in a way) to support all religions. Given their exemption from property taxes, others have to take up the slack and of course, that means us. As to the minister? He got what he wanted--a couple minutes of fame, and exposure of his decidedly un-christian beliefs.

Q1 - It depends. I usually prefer the book in general over the movie, so I prefer to read hte book first. But sometimes the movie looks really good adn I happen to go see if first... And if it was a really really good book and the movie looks only fair, I won't see the movie for fear of ruining the book.

Q2 - Yes, I do. I enjoy dancing and don't usually worry about it - I will try to learn a new dance and laugh at myself if I make a mistake or misstep.

Q3 - Can't think of everything.

Q4 - It's wrong. Don't use taxpayer funds for this.

Posted by: Marjorie at September 24, 2007 1:17 PM

1. If I've already read the book, then I will see the movie, although the movie is not always the same as the book. Screenwriters tend to use poetic license in order to make it movie friendly. Also, I won't see the movie before I read the book because then I will have the actors in my head and imagine their faces on the characters in the book. I like to "see" them for myself. If it is a very special book that I loved and don't want to ruin, then I probably won't see the movie. I've read the first two Harry Potter books, and saw both movies, and in both movies, a lot was left out.

2. I'm not comfortable dancing at first - like at a wedding or party, but if I have someone or a group of people to dance with, then I will get into it. I'm not the greatest dancer, but neither are most people at those events. I would definitely take dance lessons and strut my stuff on the dance floor!

3. There really isn't anything I want that someone else has, but if I had to choose, it would be a house.

4. I don't think taxpayer funds should support it. You don't see confessionals in airports. Why should we cater to one religion? If you do it for one, you have to do it for all. It's not my fault they need to wash their feet before praying, why should the taxpayer pay for it?

Q1 - Books and Movies: I think this question implies that I read books. With the fact that a picture is worth a thousand words and movies shoot 32 pictures a second I have already got my work cut out for me.

Q2 - Dancing: Are clothes optional?

Q3 - I Want That: If any of you have seen meÖyou would knowÖI have everything I wantÖIím the neighbor, friend, and colleague everyone wants something of. WellÖexcept my debtÖthey probably donít want that.

Q4 - Public Funds: Hmmm, let me think, build a new military base in some random country that I couldnít give a flying fudgecicle about which oppresses their culture, or help support a religious sect of a culture. This is like asking to either go and bully some kid at school around or share my lunch with him. I think this pastor has some insecurity issues, sounds like he doubts his beliefs to the point he has to lash out at every other religion out there so that his followers will think that others are bad, he is good. Its either that, or he is part of some Baptist special needs program that is allowing grown adults who have IQs below 55 to have a chance to speak out in publicÖyeah thatís probably it.

1. I love reading, so I'm far more likely to read the book than watch the movie. When I do get both, I've generally read the book first, but I also tend to approach the two as really being two different stories that happen to have the same title.

2. I'm really not a dancer, and have no desire to learn. My wife can usually persuade me to dance with her, but there are usually a million things I'd rather be doing than dancing.

3. Financial security.

4. Isn't separation of church and state one of the basic tenets of our government? The pastor is a little mental, but there are some reasonable objections that can be raised here, so no.

Installing the foot sinks has nothing to do with religion. It is a customer service issue. The airport needs taxi service for its customers to get to and from the airport. The vast majority of taxi drivers in this market happen to be of the Muslim faith. The sinks are a courtesy to the drivers provided by the airport in order to better serve the airport's customers. A happy cabbie is a happy cab rider.

The Indianapolis air port already supports Christianity. A clergy person is on staff to offer Christian comfort to distressed travelers.
