FOUR FOR FRIDAY

Q1 - Prescription Drugs: Unless you've been living under a rock these past few weeks, you know that actor Heath Ledger tragically died earlier this month of an accidental prescription drug overdose. Despite the fact that doctors and pharmacists are drilled in the art of explaining to their patients and customers exactly how to take prescription drugs, far too many people--a lot of them actors--still get it wrong and accidentally over or wrongly medicate themselves. Have you ever become sick because of drugs your prescribed by a doctor, or have you ever accidentally over medicated yourself?

Q2 - Advice: What advice would you give to a young boy or girl who expresses a sincere interest in becoming President of the United States?

Q3 - The Sky Is Falling: Taking a page from Hollywood science fiction, the U.S. government said yesterday it will try its darnedest to shoot down a broken down, bus-size U.S. spy satellite that's on a collision course with Earth. The Pentagon hopes to smash the satellite as soon as next week--just before it enters Earth's atmosphere--with a single missile fired from a Navy boat in the Pacific Ocean. Do you have faith that the Navy will succeed in hitting the satellite, which will be about 150 to 175 miles above the Earth's surface when the shot is fired?

Q4 - Spam: Which do you find more annoying... email spam or snail mail junk mail?

Q1 - Prescription Drugs: Can Heath Ledger's overdose be considered any more "accidental" than me drinking until I black out? From what I have heard and read, the guy liked getting high. He was an addict, plain and simple, and apparently it finally took so much to get him high that it killed him. I don't think you can explain this away as a situation in which a doctor overprescribed and the pharmacist failed to explain or wave a red flag or whatever.

Q2 - Advice: Study hard and get involved in your community. You can make a difference. Hey, it's the illusions that keep us going.

Q3 - The Sky Is Falling: The more interesting question is should we do it given the fact that we recently criticized China for shooting down one of its dead satellites. I think the U.S. wants to do it to show China and the rest of the world that China is not the only one who can down satellites.

Q4 - Spam: Email spam, simply because I know that once I start getting it, the volume is going to grow exponentially over time. Besides, I don't get much junk snail mail.

Posted by: Joba at February 15, 2008 5:00 AM

Prescription Drugs: I took an antacid (12 hr) while on a prescription a couple of years ago and got really sick. I was away from home, alone in a motel room. I had no idea of a interaction like that even though I'm pretty careful. I believe accidents do happen.

President: I would ask them what their motive is. I would expect the motive would be to help people. If that was the case, I'd suggest they start by actively helping people in their community.

It's Skylab All Over Again: I don't think they'll hit it. Although I hear Dick Cheney has been posted in his front yard with a shotgun as a backup.

Spam Spam Spam Spam: I have a much harder time recycling spam. It takes a little effort to get rid of either kind. I feel a tiny bit of satisfaction when I toss physical mail because I recycle and I'm helping the environment, with the other I just feel like I've only benefited myself.

Posted by: Steve L. at February 15, 2008 8:58 AM

Q1: No doctor prescription has ever had an adverse affect on me. I've never overmedicated myself either.

Q2: I'd teach them how to say: 'Nuclear'

Q3: Do I have faith they can hit it? Sure, why not? I'd rather it blow up and disintegrate elsewhere than come crashing down and kill anybody or cause unwanted damage.

Q4: I find snail junk mail to be far more annoying. I have a primary personal email that is never spammed, and use secondary accounts for online shopping and other spam-inducing activity. It is no problem to clear five email spams a day without even opening them. However, all that goes through my head with direct mailers and credit card pre-approvals is "B@st@rds, stop wasting paper on me!"

Posted by: GIldedCage at February 15, 2008 10:56 AM

1 - I don't really like taking prescriptions unless it is absolutely necessary. Never OD'ed or had an adverse affect.

2 - I'd tell them anything is possible if they apply themselves and work hard enough. Sounds cheesy but it will always hold true.

3 - They damn well better hit it for the amount of tax payer money spent on our nation's missile defense system.

4 - Snail Mail Junk! I hate it! My physical mail box at home can't handle the volume it get! God I hate some Marketing strategies...

Posted by: Tyson at February 15, 2008 11:21 AM

q1: Never suffered any adverse affect. In fact I've only every had one prescription in my entire life--when I got my wisdom teach pulled. I think it was only slightly stronger than Ibuprofen though.
q2: I tell them to be honest and have integrity. That would be great change for the presidency.
q3: I bet they get it.
q4: I get some satisfaction out of recycling my snail mail junk mail. I don't get any out of email spam.

Posted by: Ryan Roberts at February 15, 2008 11:25 AM

1- Never had mix or over medication problems. While accidents do happen, generally the people who have these accidents are those that have histories of drug abuse of some kind, making it hard to believe they're really accidents.

2- Tell them that if they really want to change the world, get a new ambition. On the list of people that I remember as having done some great good for the world, there are no presidents. On the list of people who have changed the world in a meaningful way, very few are presidents. There's also the fact that so much talent, money, and time go into becoming a president that you could really do something special with those resources that would be far more difference making that just trying to convince Americans that they should like you more than somebody else.

3- If they can't figure out where the thing is going to land (given that truly is a difficult physics problem), it seems kind of ludicris that they can hit it in one try with no hitches. I think the only reason they want to is exactly what Joba pointed out.

4- I tend not to really care about either very much, but spam email is slightly more annoying because the stuff in snail mail tends to be slightly more innocuous.

Posted by: Greg at February 15, 2008 11:41 AM

1. DRUGS: The public thinks Ledger's death was more likely drug abuse rather than mis-and over-dosing. I never have overdosed or over-medicated myself on prescription drugs.

2. ADVICE: My advice would be: run as a centrist Democrat.

3. MISSILE FAITH: I haven't given this one much thought, but would imagine we will be able to shoot it down.

4. MORE ANNOYING: I find email spam is more annoying because some of it seeps past the filters and is a nuisance. At home, I simply toss it in the trash.

Posted by: Lee McD at February 15, 2008 1:20 PM

Q1- I have never had a negative experience with prescription drugs, but I'm a bit neurotic about the effects of drugs on my system. So I pretty much avoid them whenever I can.

Q2- Start small. Check out student government, clubs, and other organizations and see how you like working within those types of systems.

Q3- Sure, they'll hit it. Although now it strikes me that this is a completely foreseeable issue, and maybe these satellites should be equipped with a self-destruct of some type.

Q4- Snail mail, for sure. It's such a waste of resources - it makes me angry on an environmental level.

Posted by: Crissi at February 15, 2008 1:32 PM

1. I have never had trouble with prescription drugs and I don't believe for a minute that Heath Ledger accidentally overdosed.

2. Don't waste your time. Do something productive.

3. I give them about a 30% chance of actually hitting the thing and then if they do hit it, how can they know where the debris will land. Maybe we should just roll the dice and let the thing crash. We could get lucky and have it hit the Clinton campaign bus. It would save us a bunch of money and some headaches.

4. Snail mail is the worst because I have to throw it away or shred it. Spam is easily deleted without even getting up from the computer.

Posted by: Zirker at February 15, 2008 2:41 PM

1. Prescription Drugs: I took two Excedrin that had expired over a year ago. My stomach hurt for a week. Not entirely sure it was the drugs though. Aside from that, never overdone it... well, unless you count the one time I over-boozed myself and spent most of the night hurling.

2. Advice: Unless you want to become a hollow shell of what you could have been, stay as far away from politics as possible. Become a Jedi instead. That way, even if you do turn to the dark side, you can still choke people to death with just your thoughts.

3. The Sky is Falling: I have complete confidence in the military's ability to shoot this bad boy down. With today's advanced targeting technologies, it should be a walk in the park. Hell, we can hit a jet controlled by a human who can anticipate being hit and take evasive maneuvers, I think we can hit a chunk of metal that doesn't change course.

PS: The reason they give for shooting it down is some NASA scientist is concerned that the fuel (which never got used) has frozen, and as such will prevent the satellite from completely burning up on re-entry, thus allowing the toxic fuel (which is expected to have turned into some kind of slush from re-entry) to leak all over the place. Hitting it with a missile is expected to break the thing up, fully exposing the frozen fuel, and having the entire thing disintegrate as usual. Were it not for the frozen-fuel theory, they would just allow it to re-enter where disintegration would take care of the problem. Although, as Joba has mentioned, I don't doubt for a second the military is pretty anxious to take a shot at it just for fun.

4. Spam: Definitely snail mail junk which, thanks to my superhuman-like skills of technical savvy, I actually get more of than the other most days.

Posted by: Stuart at February 15, 2008 3:25 PM

1. No, I hate pills and medicine and do all I can to avoid taking them.

2. hmmm, study hard and stay off drugs? Oh and be good. :)

3. Yes, I bet the Navy can hit it!

4. Junk mail because of the use of natural resources and the ability for it to be stolen.

1) When I was 5 the pharmacist gave me wrong medication accidentally and it made me quite ill and dizzy. They did apologize and gave me a plastic race car as an apology. I loved it (the car, not the illness)

And I have taken so many different kinds of cold medicine at once it made me quite ill on top of being ill. I learned from that mistake...

2) must be comfortable with lying and never holding on to your promises. Only TWO presidents in the history of the US have actually kept their campaign promises.

3) They are touting the shoot-down as a public safety issue. And it's really the fact they don't want foreign countries to possibly access the technology. Typical government B.S. And yes they will shoot it down.

4) Email spam is by far more annoying. At least with junk mail you can legitimately have it stopped for the most part. You don't have to put filters and such on your physical mailbox.

4)

Mine's posted!!! Happy Friday!

Q1: I took some Allegra and it was so strong, I suffered for days with dry eyes, tongue, everything. I think I drank my body weight in water and gatorade :P.

Q2: Be honest, don't let the power get to your head.

Q3: I think they can do it and I think it would be awesome to have a camera mounted on the missile, hehe.

Q4: Definitely hate snail mail spam, we get way too much of it, not to mention the previous homeowners junk as well. Gmail does a really good job at keeping the spam out of my inbox, so I'm happy :)

1. I find it strange that one can overdose "accidentally" on prescription drugs. If the doctor, and the prescription on the bottle, say something like "Take two pills once a day," then how hard is that to follow? Maybe some people think that if one pill is good, maybe taking a couple more will work even better. Who knows? Maybe the prescription isn't always the correct dosage for the person. I rarely take prescribed medicine, and if I do, I take only what I need.

2. I'd say, go for it, why squash their dreams? I would also explain that it can be a tough road, with a lot of negativity. I think one needs to have a thick skin and a very secure personality to be president.

3. I had heard about this, but I have no idea how they can target something that far away. Then again, they probably can.

4. Snail mail spam annoys me more because of all the trees that are wasted with useless junk mail that just gets thrown into landfills. I usually recycle mine. Email spam I just delete with the push of a button and it doesn't end up in a landfill.

Posted by: Vera at February 18, 2008 9:20 AM

1. No but I don't know if eljuan posted yet or will, but he drove with me to montana and had a tooth infection. He was going to be my wedding DJ (another story). anyways, he ended up forgetting he took his antibiotic pills, and stacked a double doser of amoxacillin or something (horse pill sized) and broke out into a red rash all over. his dr. told him he would be cool eventually but in the mean time, he was writhing in cramps in our back seat, red as a tomato, looking like a chyrnobyl fire fighter. He's an actor too, so if ledger was as flaky as E with drugs, then maybe he mistaked big time and screwed the pooch. never saw him on tabloids drunk or baked, so I think he just F'd up.

2. I would say do the opposite of what I tell them.

3. yeah they should probably nail it. It's probably just an excuse to test out a nuclear defense system. or like J chrisman said, keeping their secret safe.

4. junk mail dude, I probably toss 26 trees a month in the recycle bin. email spam is just blips and shtuff. What up MIKAL !! this is my four for Presidents day post. late as usual LOLZERZ

Posted by: Aaron V at February 18, 2008 11:26 AM

A1. never over-medicated, but have been sick from several medications that my reacted to

A2. let's do the numbers! 43 presidents from 1789 to today. It cost President George W. Bush $274 million (primary and general elections combined) to run and secure office in 2004. Given the process, number of "applicants", and the length of the "interview", I would say: best of luck in this most expensive, rarest and non-lucative job on the planet! One has a better chance of accomplishing the task of astronaut, Olympian, Tour de France winner; accomplishments we often think of as "rare".

A3. Faith? This doesn't require faith, but an understanding of science. The USAF and NASA regularly track more than a 1000 items orbiting our planet. Think about how the space station and satellites avoid collisions with space debris. Now, think about how large our planet is. What are the chances of something like this satellite actually hitting "a person"!? The media has built-up the "high risk" of this damn thing hitting "us"! How absurd! If by chance it did, I hope it lands on Fox News Bill O'Reilly's head! Will the US Navy be capable of shooting it down? Of course... that's one of the reasons we have "satellites".

A4. Email spam; because I get so much more of it!

Q1 - Prescription Drugs: No. I try to keep prescription drugs to a minimum in my life. I'll take a little more pain, or maybe deal with a little more Tylenol, before taking prescription pain medicine. I'm no superman, so I have to have take prescription drugs, like Amoxicilin, but again I try to do it sparingly. I council my family to do the same.

Q2 - Advice: Well, I still hold onto this dream ... maybe one day I will dive into the political arena ... likely a day when my family is ready for it. My advice would be to live as if you want to the role now, which means you need to make good/healthy choices, stay involved in school and public affairs, and learn to speak comfortably in front of groups. Learn to love people and relationships, not the money and glory, which will also help you make right/good/heathly decisions in life.

Q3 - The Sky Is Falling: Yes. My brother was in the Navy team firing cruise missiles far off shore during one of the conflicts in our near past ... he reports that the missiles were very accurate and very predictable. The question is, why aren't we trying to recover this satellite using the Space Shuttle's robotic arm. It seems like we made an immediate decision to shoot it down. Is there something else about this satellite that is not being discussed?

Q4 - Spam: Spam mail in all forms should be banned! I block just about everything these days, and I am sure most people do, so what is the real effectiveness of this marketing vehicle; it surely can't be good!

Good to see that China didn't miss a chance to point out the hypocrisy of the U.S. shooting down a satellite shortly after criticizing China for doing something similar. Check out the Voice of America story, "China Urges US to Provide More Information About Satellite Destruction," by Stephanie Ho.

Posted by: Joba at February 22, 2008 5:25 AM

1- Fortunately no... and, i don't really buy the "accidental" either.
2- Go for it, so much will change in 50 years, setting the path might alone be worth it for them.
3- Of course, it's just physics.
4- Junk mail, while more than annoying at least spam email is just killing time.
