Allergic Reaction - Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

Mikal_Eye_KFC.jpg

Last night, against my better judgment, I ate a tortilla-wrapped sandwich from KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) that I believe is the cause my swollen left eye (above) and smaller hives near my right wrist and on the bottom of my left foot. I took a look at KFC's website, and they do a fairly decent job of providing nutrition information and safety warnings for their menu items. From the site, I'm able to see the ingredients that went into preparing my sandwich (it's called the Toaster Wrap with Tender Roast Chicken): lettuce blend, tomatoes, chicken, wheat, MSG, gluten, soybeans, and something called pepper mayo.

Since people in my family have similar reactions to pepper and MSG, I'm going to go with the combination of both as the cause of my reaction, but since I hardly ever have such a reaction to either ingredient, I'm wondering if it could have been something else. For example, is it possible that KFC uses an over-the-top amount of MSG or perhaps uses Splenda in preparing the Ranch Dressing that was slobbered all over my sandwich/wrap?

Has anyone else experienced similar allergic reactions or food intolerance with KFC products?

Wow, Mikal. How do you feel compared to your last reaction. You need to link to your last reaction photo.

All I can say is - STOP eating fast food! You are much better off with healthy, fresh food than KFC or any other junk in a box. :o)

Dude! That's not what the Colonel intended. I also cannot eat KFC as it makes my intestines unhappy.

I love it too, but I literally feel ill after eating it. I've always thought it was the type of oil they use, but I have no proof.

Hope you feel better soon.

The only thing KFC gives me is heart burn and oily skin. I used to love it as a kid, even as an adult, same with Church's chicken, but it's all pretty bad now. I long for Mama's pan fried chicken, but she swears by Pop-eye's chicken now, so I don't even get the homemade stuff anymore. I'm Hungry ... need to sign-off and go eat! I hope you feel better soon!

Dude, this is what you should have posted under your photo: "You should see the other guy!"...not some hoopla about an allergic reaction! There is no shame in beating someone up for stealing your KFC! :)

Wow... I'm feeling for you! Well, I too have a negative reaction to KFC. Last time I ordered there, we caught the biggest chicken bone in my sandwich that you've ever seen. Seriously, it must have been like a freakin' T-Rex thigh bone or something!

Okay, that was an exaggeration.

STOP IT!

You are marring your "permanent record"...not to mention the internet!

That unfortunate lunchroom incident from the 4th grade (yes, the one when you catapulted the spoonful of mashed potatoes which landed on Mr. Thompson's toupee!) has not been expunged. Not to mention a few years later in undergrad (agreed, while it did appear that you were going to the launder mat, very few people "trip" into a huge water fountain with a full super-sized box of Ivory Soap Flakes!) which still bubbles up on your record. And just last year...three words...Boston & Duck Boat!

Mikal, most of us try to mask our afflictions and suffer quietly in our little bubbles of existence. And to that I reply, Thank God! I don't want to start my mornings at the "Vortex of Knowledge & Wasted Time" with the sight of a mangled limb, an open wound or some other lovely visual treat.

Most importantly, I worry that your "Babe Magnet Quotient" is going to suffer. Granted, you have enjoyed the past 7 years with your ranking in People Magazine's Most Beautiful People Issues, but time is not your friend. It might not be this year, or even the next 10 years, but it's coming!

Look at poor George Clooney. His last film...not so great. And where is he this year? Yeah, he's still in the Top 5 (OK...#2) BUT, you see my point!! Don't mess with excellence!

Sorry to hear of it, Mikal! Hope you're feeling better. Do you have an allergy to Splenda? What happens?

Gah..they slobber special sauce all over the wrap. Sounds like an adjective their ad guys don't want to use so much.

Hope swellage goes away dude. But on another note, these breakouts make for good blog material. You should have a nice collection of allergy swelling pics for a med student to make a dissertation with.
