FOUR FOR FRIDAY
Q1 - Cookies: The Oreo cookie is an American favorite, whether drenched in milk chocolate, loaded with extra creamy filling or dipped in a glass of milk. Now the Oreo is headed overseas to Britain where it's manufacturer, Nabisco, hopes to please the British palate (can you say "Oreos and Tea"). In any event, what is your favorite type and/or brand of cookie?
Q2 - Music: Helping to alleviate pain and stress in premature babies could be as simple as offering them a few verses of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" -- at least that's what a new study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children shows... that music could help premature babies get out of intensive care units sooner. What role or impact if any does music play in your life or in the life of your friends and family?
Q3 - You: What do you think is the biggest misconception about you?
Q4 - Spending Your Own Money: Jared Polis, a 30-something Internet generation entrepreneur--who together with his parents founded and then sold an online greeting card website (bluemountainarts.com) for $780 million back in 1998--is now running for a seat in the United States Congress (2nd Congressional District--Colorado). According to recent reports, Polis, who legally changed his last name in the late-90s from Schutz to Polis, is said to have already self-funded his campaign to the tune of nearly $3.7 Million, which according to the Boulder Daily Camera is three times as much money as he has raised from contributors, and dramatically more than any of his opponents have been able to raise or contribute themselves to their own campaigns. Do you think it's okay for people to self-fund their race for public office in such large amounts--like Jared Polis and other wealthy American politicians have done over the years--or, should limits be placed on the amount of money people are allowed to pour into their own campaigns?

1) Oreos - dunked in milk. And I like the final sip of milk with the Oreo crumbs in the bottom too.
2) I think of music as a soundtrack to my life. It's almost as important as food. I try to match the music to whatever I'm doing or feeling.
3) People think have no control about my baldness or my height. Haha, silly fools!!
4) It seems reasonable that a campaign would be looked at as an "entity" just as a corporation is. The person running is a contributor just like anyone else and should be limited.
Q1 - Cookies: Oreos are right in there. Although the Pepperidge Farm Chocolate Chip and Macadamia nut cookies are my staple for my backpacking trips.
Q2 - Music: Big time impact. I play the piano, and I hope my kids play some sort of musical instrument. And I'm listening to music almost all day long, at work, the car, etc.
Q3 - You: That I'm the smartest person they know. I'm probably at least in the top 3 for most people though, so it's not too much of a misconception. In all seriousness: probably that I don't care about other peoples thoughts/opinions.
Q4 - Spending Your Own Money: Better their own money than money they'll owe favors for. Ultimately, people without money or influence to get money will never be elected in this country unless someone tries to create a level playing field standard, and you'd probably have to use taxpayer money to level it out, so that will never happen. So if you want to spend (should I say waste?) your hard earned money on running for office, more power to you. Me? I'd buy an island in the bahamas or something cool like that.
q1: I like oreos. I think chipahoey are gross, okay with milk though.
q2: I listen to music most everyday at some point or another. I usually wake up to music.
q3: That I'm as dumb as I look. I am at least of average intelligence.
q4: I think rich people should get all the benefits normal and poor people don't. I think they should be able to buy a seat in congress (for themselves or otherwise). I think they should get more tax breaks and at the same time more subsidies from the government. I mean after all if the rich people weren't around who would look out for the rest of us?
1. Yeah I heard about that, something about the British thinking the oreo was kind of nasty because of its black residue on the teeth. I really don't think the British have a leg to stand on talking about teeth.I like oreos though I guess I eat whatever, but then again I come from a long line of white trash mayonaise eatin' mother scratchers.
2. Music harmonizes the soul. Although, there can be too much of it. I don't see how people can walk the street with an ipod or whatever. I think that can lead to a easy mugging. Sometimes you need quiet to settle the thought stream too.
3. That I'm reserved and quiet. Just because I'm not saying anything doesn't mean I can hatch an clever, slightly evil plan.
4. Well it's no secret that money carries clout in every aspect of life. We have a ton of dipshits in power but they have money to pay for people to help them say the right things, at the right place , and to market and propagate their agenda. So if he's funding his own campaign it's no different. Just a little more obvious about what needs to be done to get votes in our "democratic" society.
Q1 - Cookies: I like Chocolate Chip with Walnut, not chewy. If I pick something off the shelf, then I prefer Fig Newtons, Chips Ahoy, Golden Oreos, or Nutter Butter. I like cookies!!!
Q2 - Music: I love to jam in the car ... it helps to relax me, and I like almost all types of music. I like to sing in the church choir, and I love singing with my kids. I really thing music brings people together and brings a software side out too. Well, unless you are listening to some Death Metal of something.
Q3 - You: That my good looks get in the way of my humility. No seriously, it is tough to be this handsome. ;>)
Q4 - Spending Your Own Money: I really think people should be limited to loaning themselves money for their campaigns ... maybe $100k or something. The rest needs to be rasied from the public with donation sources made public too. This takes away the advantage of the rich running for office and makes the peoples choice more likely to run for various offices.
Q1 - Cookies: I'd have to say my favorite is something from Mrs. Field's. But since I can't afford to pay $10 for a single cookie, I usually go cheap and make my own.
Q2 - Music: I played the piano as a pre-teen and the trumpet as a teen through high school. I would say those experiences allow me to appreciate the musical artists of our day a little more than the average Joe. But other than the fact that I listen to music on occasion (my iPod "only" has around 600 songs on it) it doesn't play much of a role in my life. However, it certainly helps relieve the stress after a hard day's work.
Q3 - You: That I have somewhere on the order of 23 confirmed kills as a member of some elite military unit (most commonly the Navy SEALs or Force Recon).
Q4 - Spending Your Own Money: Spending 10x more money than everybody else combined doesn't change your views or policies. I say let a person spend all they want. The more they spend, the bigger the hypocrite (if they really wanted to change the world, there are FAR better ways to do it if you have millions to blow). It's up to us normal folk to be smart enough to choose a candidate based on their stance rather than the number of times their face appears on the television. I'll admit that I find it rather insulting that politicians think so little of us that they think we can be bought.
1. I just heard something on the news that the Hydrox cookie, similar to an Oreo, is making a comeback. I like most cookies, but my favorites are the chocolate chips ones that my sister makes. She is a great cookie baker. Pepperidge Farm are good cookies.
2. I always have the radio or a cd on in the car when I am driving. I used to be into music a lot when I was a teenager, but I rarely turn it on at home, probably because I don't have a CD player, except on my computer. I use my iPod when I work out or when I am traveling. But, that perfect song can really lift my spirits. I have no doubt it can help heal the sick, especially babies.
3. Just because I am a generally quiet person, people tend to think that I am innocent and would never do something unexpected. I am wild at heart, I guess I only express it when it's necessary or when I feel like it.
4. I think it should be an even playing field so everyone has a fair chance to run for public office, whether they have the money or need to raise it.
I played along.
Have a great weekend!
I played! Click my name for the link.
Great questions; this is my first time here.
Stepher
1- Chewy Chips Ahoy, plastic death I know, but oh so delicious.
2- I'm non-functional without music. I have no money to finance it yet, but someday I indent to have a continuous life soundtrack.
3- I think I'm generally a 'you get what you see' kind of guy. Some people might mistake my laid back attitude for apathy though.
4- I think that running for a political office should be changed entirely. All the campaign funds and contributions should be pooled into one big bucket that all the candidates for a particular office must divide up equally. Maybe you could say that no one can dip in until they get a certain amount contributed, but let's level the playing field a bit.
1. I dig the cookies from the Double Tree. They are the best cookies in the world. If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'.
2. Music is a huge part of my life. From playing guitar to discovering new music to seeing live shows, I love it all!
3. Hmm, that I'm a goodie two shoes.
4. I'm a big fan of Jared Polis. He can do whatever he wants with his own money. He has donated to the Cottonwood Institute and is a huge philanthropist in the Denver community. The real question is why do politicians have to raise so much money to compete in politics these days. The answer, 30 second national tv ads. They are expensive and not the way we should discuss complex campaign issues. Read Al Gore's book, "The Assault on Reason," for more info...
Cool blog! I just posted to the 29th's discussion.
1. Oreos rock and definitely stand in a class all their own. No Hydrox will ever stand up to an Oreo. Outside of the Oreo, homemade choc. chip cookies (Toll House recipe) take the cake (har, har)!
2. Music is huge in my life. I have an eclectic collection of albums ranging from the Indigo Girls to Yanni to Ozzy Osborn. Each group allows the brainwaves to jog into motion and let the emotions flow. I completely believe that music would effect babies' development.
3. I am a crusader at heart. I can't stand highly paid, incompetent and mentally insane people in the business world impacting others lives. I believe that those who can stand up for their values without jeopardizing their family owe it to those who have families depending on them, to document and present injustices to the appropriate party(s).
4. Spending in political campaigns is out of hand. We need a politician with a break through simple message - kinda like the Apple commercials with two guys, a white backdrop and a non-confrontational about why Apple stands out from the others.
1. Soft chocolate chip cookies are my favorite.
2. I don't listen to music unless I'm driving, and I often just drive in silence or listen to talk radio. I rode a 2003 yzf r6 for a few years and never listened to music while riding. I've never owned an ipod... so I guess that says plenty. If I'm listening to music, it's Jay-Z most likely.
All that being said, I have a rather rich background with music. I played the piano for 9 years, alto sax for 3, and the tuba for 1.
3. I'm not sure, to be honest.
4. 9 times out of 10, I'm against regulation. In this case, though, I would have to say that putting a cap on how much a candidate can self-sustain a campaign would be reasonable.
1. Mint Milanos from the freezer
2. When I was pregnant I listened to Van Morrison alot. After my children were born and they started crying, they would stop when I played Van Morrison (or I sang I'm a little tea pot). I believe everyone should play an instrument. I can play guitar-Jingle bells, Horse with no Name & I've got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates. (I'm aging myself) Thinking of taking lessons again to update my repetoire.
3. Not really sure what people think. Probably that I'm alot stronger/independent than I am or than I want to be.
4.There should be a limit on the amount people are able to spend. Everyone should have a fair playing field. Lets see how well they can manage their own budgets before they play with ours.
C-ya when you look out the window!
A1. Pepperidge Farms Brussels - mmmmmm.....
A2. Absolutely love being surrounded by appropriate music, depending on what I'm doing. I'm not a big concert goer, but do enjoy the occassional live show of small bands, bluegrass, folk, etc. Music, in general, is quite important to all cultures. It's inherently a part of our story and history.
A3. That I'm not always dependable. It's very situational and depends upon factors of principle and priority. I can't be everything to everyone and that tends to frustrate me. My personality is a "pleaser" type, but I can fall short of meeting everyone's expectations a 100% of the time. But, that's life! I have to first live to my expectations.
A4. Not sure how I stand on this issue. On one hand, I'd like to see politicians stand on their own merit without the race of money. But, then again!
1. I usually prefer fresh baked cookies (even if they're baked from frozen store-bought dough), but if I were going to buy a cookie, I like Chewy Chips Ahoy, Iced Oatmeal, or Fudge-Striped Shortbread cookies...of course that assumes I'm buying cookies from a store. If a girl scout drops by, it's a different story. Then I'd be going for Samoas and Tag Alongs. Also, I really miss Passa Tempos--a really great cookie they have in Brazil; it's a sandwich type cookie (like the oreo) but uses two square shortbread cookies with milk chocolate in the middle--delicious! I guess I really like cookies. In fact, that only type of cookie I can think of that I DON'T like are those containing raisins.
2. I love music. I often use music to change my mood if I don't like the way I'm feeling or enhance it if I do.
3. That I'm honest. :) Actually, I don't really have any idea. I guess I'm really bad at reading people. If they don't tell me what they're thinking about me, I usually can't figure it out on my own.
4. I don't think there should be limits. This may be naive, but I think it's just an opportunity for less-wealthy candidates to get creative with their campaigns and raising money or getting their message across with less. If they are truly going to be a good candidate this is one of many challenges that they will have to face and overcome if they are going to succeed. Plus, if money were really the sole factor for winning an election, wouldn't Ross Perot have been president?
Q1 - My moms homemade chocolate chip cookies are the BEST!!
Q2 - Music is big for me. If I listen to right kind of music, it impacts my entire day. If some good songs come on the radio on my way to work, it puts me into a good mood.
Q3 - I'm not really sure. I guess I don't usually care what other people think of me.
Q4 - If they have their own money, sure, spend it! I don't really care either way.
Q1 - Oreos Doublestuff. What more is there to say?
Q2- I used to make up "soundtracks" to my life - there are about 52 songs on that soundtrack now, from all different genres. A song only makes it to my soundtrack if it has major significance in my life - not just if I love it. Music is a huge part of my life alone and with my family!
Q3- I think people think I'm "flighty" and I play the part (maybe it's easier that way), but I'm actually a very deep thinker and like to think of myself as very reliable and dependable.
Q4- I'll leave this one for Huckabee to wine... I mean comment about.
Q1 - I like homemade cookies. Barring those, I would have to say I'm partial to Girl Scout Cookies Thin Mints. Yum! (they're really good frozen, too)
Q2 - When my babies were little I used to sing to them all the time, but not usually the traditional lullabies. I sang the songs I remember singing with my Mom, often songs from the 50s or songs from Sound of Music. My daughter so loved those songs, at 3 she would sit through most of that movie. Nowadays, I listen to music on my computer, in the car and working out. My kids sing along with me in the car, and sometimes we put it on at home and sing and dance along. It's a big part of my life - music can transport me immediately to another mood or place or feeling.
Q3 - I don't really know. I know I have a group of online friends and somehow despite my bad habit of saying sometimes outrageously sexual things, I guess I show enough of my real self that they have a good sense of the person I really am. Phew!
Q4 - I think they should be limited. Otherwise, it is like they are truly buying their way into office - we all know, that advertising plays a very large role in public perception of politicians.
