FOUR FOR FRIDAY
Q1 - Help, I'm Stuck: With gas prices hovering at more $4/gallon, motorists are said to be putting less fuel in their tanks, then coming up empty on the highway. Though national statistics on out-of-gas motorists do not exist, there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that drivers unwilling or unable to fill 'er up are gambling by keeping their tanks extremely low on fuel. In the Philadelphia area, where the average price for a gallon of regular broke $4 last Friday, calls from out-of-gas AAA members doubled between May 2007 and May 2008, from 81 to 161, the auto club reported. Have you ever run out of gas? If so, what happened?
Q2 - Summer 2008 Movies: Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Sex and the City: The Movie, Kung Fu Panda, You Don't Mess with the Zohan, The Happening, The Incredible Hulk, Get Smart, Wall-E, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Dark Knight, Step Brothers, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, The Mummy 3, The Rocker, Pineapple Express, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Tropic Thunder... which movies are you most looking forward to watching this summer?
Q3 - Reviews: I recently joined the consumer review website Yelp.com, where I can read, create and post reviews of everything from restaurants to my local cable provider. How likely are you to write, create and post reviews on sites like Yelp or Amazon, and how likely are you to read consumer reviews as a part of your purchasing process?
Q4 - Bookstore: When you visit a bookstore, which sections do you normally gravitate to and which do you avoid at all costs?

1- I only ran out once, and it was as I was turning in to the gas station. Unfortunately it was uphill, so I had to get out and push the last 40 feet or so to the pump. Now I'm way more cautious about the tank being so low, and try to fill up more frequently.
2- Iron Man is the best one I've seen so far, and the Dark Knight is the one I most want to see.
3- I rarely write reviews, and I consider those that write them to generally be the vocal minority so I ignore them. I'm much more likely to be influenced by what my friends might have to say.
4- I head right for the SciFi/Fantasy, but there's not really any part of a bookstore I find myself averse to.
Mikal, when I was poor, I literally ran out of gas and coasted into a gas station. I was obviously on my way to fuel up so I anticipated possibly running out. I have never done that since. I understand that running your car low might not be a choice for some consumers, but in general, motorists need to be responsible. If you run out of gas, I think you're an idiot.
Q1 - Help, I'm Stuck: I ran out of gas in 1994 coming home from work once when my "low gas" warning light failed. I ran out of gas just short of my freeway offramp, which I was able to coast down and walk to the gas station right at the corner there. They gave me a gallon of free gas. Another time was with my motorcycle. I had just gotten it, and, since there was no gas gauge, didn't know how far I could get on a tank. I didn't think it had run out of gas already, so I started taking it apart to find out what the problem was. I eventually got the gas tank off and that's when I realized it was dry.
Q2 - Summer 2008 Movies: Iron Man was the one I most looked forward to. Now I'm waiting for Hancock.
Q3 - Reviews: I've left a few reviews for computer stores, but it has been awhile. I always read consumer reviews when considering shopping at a new place. I've had too many bad experiences with crappy retailers.
Q4 - Bookstore: Haven't been to a bookstore (of my own volition) since college, where I usually would be looking for a computer programming book (the geek section). But normally I'm a SciFi (the other geek section)/Semper Fi fan, so one of those are what I'd go for I imagine. Avoid? The cooking section I guess.
Q1 - I thought only girls ran out of gas?
I kid. I kid. Though, I have never run out and every single one of my girlfriends through the years has...multiple times.
Q2 - Dark Knight fo sho. Wall-E will probably be good just cause it's a Pixar film. That's about it. Indiana Jones...
sigh...
Q3 - I'm on Yelp too. It helps a lot when you move to a new area. I probably wouldn't write a review unless the place pissed me off. Hmm...What's that say about me? I check consumer reports before I buy stuff all the time.
Q4 - Magazines, Outdoors-ey books
I stay away from the religious and the GLBT section. Not that there's anything wrong with those subjects, they just aren't for me.
1. Yeah, just last month I pooped out on a busy ass road, kept her too close to E. I didn't have any cash and Chevron doesn't carry a gas can loaner (wanted a Hamilton for a half gallon plastic can, wtf!) also I forgot my $$. Long story short, a generous man ended up buying me a can of gas and on top of that giving me twenty bucks. I refused but he insisted; so I am in charge of carrying that karma forward
2.I can't say that I'm anticipating summer movies. Kinda tired of these blockbuster remakes of older ideas, hyper stylized and churned out for the masses. But sometimes I bite the lure and feed the machine.
3.Yeah I like Yelp, I was checkin it out before I went to LA. I would totally write a review. I do it once in a while from the facebook app on books and restaurants.
4. I like art, photography and classic books. My inner nerd finds me looking at the Dungeons and Dragons manuals (I'm lucky to have a wife admitting that)
1.Ha, the funny thing is I have run out of gas 50 feet from a gas station. This was before gas prices started to sour.
2. I would have to go with You Don't Mess with the Zohan, Wall-E, Hellboy II, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, The Mummy 3.
3. I am not one to really read before I do something. It usually depends on price, I expect to get what I pay for. On the flip side my wife is freak about reading consumer reviews, but does not post reviews.
4. I have not been to book store since high school. the only book store I go to is a t UVSC, and those are required.
Mine's up! Have a great weekend!
1. No, I have never run out of gas and gotten stuck on the side of the road. I have gotten to the point where my gas light went on to remind me I was very low on gas, but I never ran out.
2. The only movie in that list that interests me is "Sex and The City: The Movie". I will probably go and see it.
3. I don't usually post reviews, but I will usually read them if I am interested in purchasing a certain product.
4. I always check out the new fiction, self-help, and magazines. I usually avoid science fiction and mystery. Not that I don't like a good sci-fi or mystery novel, but they are not my favorites.
Q1 - No, actually, I never have run out of gas. I've gotten pretty darn close, and it's just because I'm just trying to get to Xday before I fill up my car.
Q2 - First, Sex and the City. Second, Dark Knight. Third, Pineapple Express. Fourth, Hellboy II. Fifth, Tropic Thunder.
Q3 - I totally look for customer reviews before I buy anything of consequence. I do sometimes use them before visiting a new restaurant, but mostly just for large, electronic purchases. Oh, and TripAdvisor is the best thing ever. But I really stink at leaving my own reviews. I have the best of intentions of contributing to that community, but I always forget.
Q4 - I always go to the Mystery section, and to the Crafts section. I love looking at those books that come with little kits. A always avoid the kids area (fortunately, it's normally sectioned off) and the self-help aisle.
1. Nope. I'm pretty sure I've coasted into a gas station on fumes a time or two, but I've been lucky enough to never run out.
2. I don't think Iron Man would have been in my most anticipated list, but it should have been. Indiana Jones was on the list, but it shouldn't have been. As for movies I haven't seen, I'm most excited about Batman and Helboy II. I'll probably end up seeing the Hulk, Get Smart, The Mummy, StarWars, and possibly a few more in the theater, but the rest will wait for netflix.
3. I don't usually write reviews unless someone does something to really piss me off, but I do check them regularly for products or service I'm going to spend my money on.
4. I usually end up in the business section, self help for writing or making movies, or Fantasy/Sci-Fi. I don't know that there's an area I consciously avoid--they're just less interesting so I don't gravitate to them.
1) I HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS MANY TIMES! The reason? The last 3 cars my gas gauge has not worked right. Lame I know.
2) Anal Intruders 15: The Jersey Tunnel. The first 14 installments have really left my hanging and there is alot of plot lines and story elements to resolve.
3) I like online reviews and reviewing I find them very helpful in real life decisions. I do however think the reviewee should be allowed a clear way to respond to reviews.
4) I like history, current events, graphic design, self-help, business. I avoid cooking, crafts, and bomb-making.
1) Back in high school I ran out of gas frequently; but I was also driving a '76 AMC Gremlin that got 8 mpg and had no functioning gas gauge, so we had to guesstimate how much fuel was in the tank. Once I got the Queen Elizabeth (a 67 Buick Skylark that ironically got better mielage) I never ran out of gas again.
2) Good Lord. There's not many of those that I want to see, and not a one I HAVE to see on the big screen.
3)It depends. I read reviews, but take them with a grain of salt, especially those to do with books/movies/television because people tend to be more involved with those than, say, a chef's knife. That being said, I'm much more likely to post a review of that chef's knife than I am a book or movie.
4) I like to look at employee recommendations so long as they seem to be genuine and not a folksy spin on pushing whatever crap they got a deal on from the publisher. Otherwise, I check out crafts (for knitting books), fiction and sci-fi, biographies, cooking and the bargain section.
Q1 - Help, I'm Stuck: I can't recall ever running out of gas, but I was running low in East St. Louis. This is not a place where you'd want to run out of gas.
Q2 - Summer 2008 Movies: Iron Man was the movie I was most looking forward to. I was a little disappointed that they didn't play the Black Sabbath song more during the movie. I thought they should've cranked up Ozzie right as Iron Man was about to emerge from the cave. Other than that, I loved it. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are two of my favorite actors.
Q3 - Reviews: I'll take the time to review products I really love or really hate, especially products I hate. I do rely on reviews to purchase products. Recently, I was in the market for an affordable analog-to-digital video convertor and relied heavily on what others said about the various products. After using the convertor I purchased, I am very satisfied.
Q4 - Bookstore: I head to the sections on philosophy and to the novels. I also like books about clever inventions and innovations, but I'm not sure which section those are in. I buy most of my books online these days.
