Four For Friday

Q1 - Artistic License: If you could quit your day job to pursue a full-time career in art, and you were guaranteed at least the same income you make now, what would you create/sell?

Q2 - Holding: How long will you wait on hold (in a call-waiting situation--not in a customer service situation) before hanging up? For example, if you are on the phone with your Mom and she puts you on hold to take another call, will you stay on the line until she comes back or do you have a particular threshold for such things (i.e., it's different depending upon who it is that put you on hold)?

Q3 - Trash: With the nation's landfills reaching capacity, state and local governments are adopting new strategies to deal with solid and hazardous waste, from stepped-up recycling programs to exporting trash to foreign countries. Are you more concerned, less concerned, or not concerned at all about the amount of trash you personally create?

Q4 - Election: General speaking, are you looking forward to this summer's political conventions and the ensuing Presidential election?

Q1: I would love to be able to do this! I would like to get involved in scrapbooking again. Preserving people's memories seems like a good thing. Or recently I've been experimenting with framing pictures with wood and using rub-on lettering. That has been pretty fun.

Q2: That's easy. I have the 60-second rule. If you put me on hold you have 60 seconds to come back to me or I just hang up. And then it is YOUR responsibility to call me back. There are few people who get a pass on this rule.

Q3: I wouldn't say I was more or less concerned. I'm the same concerned. I think recycling needs to be stepped up in Utah Valley.

Q4: I'm not looking forward to it in the same way I look forward to vacations or movie premieres. Ha. But I think it will be interesting to see how thing unfold.

1) Oh! There are too many choices! Is designing and selling flower bouquets considered an art? How about making pastries?
2) If I am feeling patient, maybe 2 minutes. I would rather have someone call me back then wait on hold.
3) I have always been concerned about the amount of trash I create. I seem to take note every time I have to take my trash out. But I can't say that I take extra steps to create less trash. I guess that makes me a hypocrite...
4) I can't say that I am looking forward to the summer's political conventions. But it will be a good day when we can elect a new president.

1- I would be a musician, hands down. It would be a hard call between guitar or piano, but probably with a feel like James Taylor/Jack Johnson/Later Eric Clapton either way.

2- You've got about a minute tops, except my wife, who I just politely request to call me back later.

3- I have some mild concerns, but generally I think we should invest more in microwave decomposition or plastic eating microbe research.

4- Conventions are a waist of time and money where people who already think to much of themselves give each other pats on the back. I am interested in debates between the candidates.

1) Knowing me that's easy... music music music

2) If I need to talk to someon, I will wait, I have speaker phone I just click speaker and put my phone down and go back to what I was doing. If it is anyone by the name of Farrel Sharp who puts me on hold however, I will hang up immediately.

3) Very concerned. Fortunately Portland by law is required to provide recycling to every household, so its much easier to do here. Where my parents live, it's an arduous task for folks to recycle even if they want to. I watch very much the kinds of packaging I buy as well as what things are made of.

4) It will fascinating, and very tiresome and I think it's going to get very ugly.

1. I'd do it in a heartbeat, My art would need to involve wet clay and nudity. Found objects and animals, and funyons, lots of funyons.

2. I'll stay on for a while. If I've got a lot of time I'll simply turn the speakerphone on and go do something else, cause I know that whoever is holding me probably has one of those beeper phones that will notify you if they've been on too long, all that time they will have beeping and beeping in their ear and I'll just be sittin there watching the jeffersons or something. Or if not, they will eventually have to get rid of me to open that line. And that's when I'll be: "Yo WTF did you need me to hold for so long!". If I have no time, I will do like meagen and stay on for a minute, then slam that sucker down and let em think about their slow response time.

3. Yass..we need less stuff that is made to throw away. Those single serving things are hugely wasteful. Especially in plastic, we are addicted to plastics. If we just had big vat dispensers, like bulk maple syrup, I would go and use my old bottle and get em reloaded.

4. I'm not hot and bothered about political speeches, but I'm curious to see how they stack up at the end.

Q1 - I guess I kind of do create art already. I think I'd like to be a film editor or director though.

Q2 - Depends on if I'm playing xbox or not. Plus, my crummy cell phone is to small to hold between my head an shoulder. I usually don't wait too long.

Q3 - Totally. Recycle everything I can. (which doesn't include glass because apparently that's impossible to do in utah. Anyone know of a place? I want to water my lawn with 'grey water' (which is the water that goes down the drain from your sink and shower) when I have a house.

Q4 - I'm looking forward to it as long as it goes 'my' way. is that selfish?

Hello FBs - especially Lee McD - you are a RIOT!!

My answers to the questions...

Q1. I am not much for art. If I could do anything, it would involve chocolate as a food art form.

Q2. For family, I will wait the longest on call waiting: 1-2 minutes. All others (with the exception of 2-3 very close friends), the obligatory, polite 30 seconds or so.

Q3. HUGE fan of recycling. I have been recycling trash at least 20 years or so. Don't have a sprinkler system and my husband and I shower together to the tunes of Trace Adkins as much as possible. We donate most if not all of our unused clothing, electronics, etc.. I refuse to throw anything in the trash if it has ANY use/value.

Q4. The election? There is no doubt that I am looking forward to this election season. I am not sure what 'Josh's way' might be, but I for one am looking forward to some fair and balanced news coverage while hoping that Obama's inexperience will be exposed. Since losing a family member in the 9/11 attacks, I refuse to settle for a President who is unable to display tenacity and quick decision making abilities in a time of crisis.

I am a firm believer that the role of national democratic leadership is to execute decisions of the majority - decisions that no small number of its populace can handle on its own. This country has been well-endowed for several years: the result of many hard working generations before us. Now we sit, griping about the cost of fuel for the inefficient vehicles (those 'must-have' Rovers and H2s) we all HAD to buy, our over-weight population (the result of readily available food supplies of all costs), and let's not forget the mortgage crisis brought on by many who forgot about the concept of purchase price while getting snowed by the 'monthly payment' sales pitch.

This election will be interesting. I think McCain is exhibiting some very smart campaign strategies while Obama flits in and out of confusion on his religious beliefs, who in the middle east he would support or attack AND his relationship with Hillary. The man is young and is showing how he can be pushed around. NOT GOOD.

Right now, Obama is acting like the kid in high school who just became popular. He is excited, knows it is a great thing, but does not know how to wean off the Kool Aid that got him there.

All I can say is this, we should kiss our family, friends and everyone around us in thanks that the Hillary devil did not make it into office!

'Tis the season, FBs!!!

1) Glass - sculptures, as large as possible.
I just took my first glass blowing class and I'm absolutely hooked. It's magical. You sweat like a pig; move swiftly yet cautiously; completely focus on the molten glob of goo; add baby steps to your choreography of design skills; and live in suspense for 24 hours while your finished product cools to reveal your gift from nature. It's an exotic mental vacation from your daily woes.
Dale Chihuly is my favorite glass artist because he's so playful with his designs.
When can I expect the Art Fairy to wave her magic glass wand over me?!

2.) UGH! Rude! Hate it!
Thank goodness for Call Waiting - Caller ID...half-caf, Grande rice milk latte.
If I absolutely need to take the other call, I own it and ask the first person if I can call them back after I resolve the incoming call.
Who likes to wait?

3.) Americans are so wasteful. Maybe we're all running too fast, expecting too much and not making wise choices. I'm trying to "Edit" my life and simplify everything I can each day.
Maybe that's also why our piggy banks are getting lighter.

4.) Am I "looking forward to this summer's political conventions...?" Oh yeah, it's up there with the 2 dental implants I have scheduled for next month! At least they include "laughing gas" with the surgery.

Posted by: YoYo at June 27, 2008 8:54 PM

1) Painting or photography

2) Maybe a minute if it's family. If it's anyone else? 10-15 seconds.

3) More concerned than what? I don't generate a large amount of trash but because I don't like waste, I've always avoided disposable items, single serving containers and over packaged items. Heck, I don't think I've even had a roll of paper towels in the apartment for the better part of a year.

4) I'm looking forward to it being over with because I have no doubt that it's going to get ugly fast.

Q1:I would definitely pursue photography, especially with the technological advances digital photography has made in recent years. My state (Iowa) has 5,000 miles of navigable streams that offer a variety of scenic views. However, it seems even Iowans have yet to tap the wonderful recreational opportunities they offer. I would create a book highlighting some of the more scenic wonders that exist in a state littered with farm fields.

Q2: I like that 60 second rule.

Q3: I'm more concerned. I wish we could go back to the days where you picked up a part or item you needed from the general store--it had no packaging. You just told the clerk what you wanted and s/he went to the store room and returned with the item or device. There is way too much wasted in packaging.

Q4: No! I'm burned out. I've decided the guy I'm voting for has recently been as calculated and wishy washy in competing in the general election as his rival was in competing in the primary. That's why I preferred him to her, but now he's sounding more like her. I'm so naive!

Posted by: jwenck at June 28, 2008 5:36 AM

1. Photography-that's what I did. People said I was good. I ended up being the person standing behind the photographer directing. If I was good I would love to sing & play guitar. I can only play "a horse w/ no name"

2. I will hold for about 1 minute. depends on whats going on.

3. Trash is trash. what else are you going to do with it?

4. No. Iam not interested in anyone running.

Posted by: anne-marie at June 28, 2008 6:33 AM

1. I would choose photography. Preserving a memory: family reunion, trip to the Grand Canyon, etc, has a very strong appeal to me, and it would be cool to help others preserve their memories.

2. I don't hang around long for anyone. Honestly, if they don't think our conversation is important enough to remain uninterrupted, they can call me back when it is more convenient for them.

3. I am not more or less concerned about my trash. It is always a thought in the back of my mind. I do my best to minimize the trashy output as much as possible.

4. I am not looking forward to it at all. The primaries were much more interesting. I don't care for either of the candidates so I will learn enough to choose the lesser of two evils.

Q1 - Artistic License: Hmm... I think I'd become a comic book artist/author. Probably just an author, since my drawing skills aren't so great.

Q2 - Holding: Depends on my current mood. Anywhere from 30 seconds to a good 10 minutes.

Q3 - Trash: I am only as concerned today with it as I was 25 years ago, which is to say I make some effort to restrict my trash contribution. My family of five, for about an entire year, only had to put our garbage can out every other week because we only filled it half full (even without recycling). But now that we have been doing a lot of work on our house, we have been filling it every week, but not nearly as much as neighbors whose trash cans seem to be overflowing every garbage day. Hopefully get back to normal soon.

Q4 - Election: Generally speaking, I pretty much hate politics. I'm looking forward to it being over.

Excellent questions Mr. Belicove.

1. I think I would get into nature photography. It would give me an excuse to get out a lot more, capture amazing photos, and share it with the masses.

2. My world "on-hold" record is with Mikal Belicove, who put me on hold for 13 minutes and 32 seconds while talking to a client. What a jerk!

3. I am very conscious about the amount of trash my wife and I produce. We recycle everything we can, have a worm composting bin to take care of our scraps, and are trying our best to do our part. I really like the pay for pollution approach and would like to see the cost rise for trash collection so people will be kicked in the ass to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost! As my worm guy says, "Promote Global Worming!"

4. I love politics and I have been tracking the election campaign since last summer. Yes we can!

Posted by: Ford Church at July 2, 2008 9:36 AM

1. Organic cotton silk-screened T-shirts. Or handmade jewelry.

2. If it is a family member or close friend I will wait a minute or two, otherwise I will hang up and let them call me back. I think it's rude to take another call when you are talking to someone else. To me it says, "You are not important, and I can't be in the present moment."

3. I am very conscious of the amount of trash I generate, and do my best to keep it to a minimum. I always use my canvas bags at the grocery store and recycle what I can. It's so sad to know that all the garbage we "throw out" gets buried in the ground, dumped in the oceans or sent to another country.

4. Overall, I am not a political junkie, but I do need to brush up on the candidates. It's going to be an interesting election come November.
