Four For Friday

Q1 - Popcorn and Candy: According to the author of "Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies, And Other Pricing Puzzles" (University of California-Irvine Professor Richard McKenzie), buying your movie candy at a local drugstore or Costco can save you as much as 86% from what the theater charges on a price per ounce basis. When you go to the movies, what type of candy and refreshments do you usually buy, or do smuggle yours into the theatre?

Q2 - Then & Now: A recent special issue of People magazine focusing on child actors from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, profiled more than 100 former showbiz kids with an emphasis on where they are in their lives today. Are there any child actors you would like an update on? If so, which one(s)?

Q3 - Pollution: Recent reports indicate that as much as 46,000 pieces of floating plastic can be found per square mile of ocean. If you were enjoying time at the beach by wading in the water, and you noticed garbage floating nearby, would you collect it and throw it away once you were back on shore?

Q4 - Right Now: What is your most pressing concern right now?

Comments:

Q1 - I usually forgo the refreshments. I can go a couple hours without eating. Every once in a while, it's great though, to have some popcorn absolutely saturated in butter.

Q2 - Not any I can think of. Punky Brewster is hot.

Q3 - Most definitely. The garbage caught in the gyres is unbelievable.

Q4 - The house we put an offer on.

Q1- I usually smuggle my candy (hot tamales, sour patch kids, everlasting gobstoppers) and buy the popcorn and drink.

Q2- I can't really think of any one I'd like an update on right now.

Q3- If we are being 100% honest here, I would probably just let the garbage float on by. I know, I'm a terrible person.

Q4- My most pressing concern is figuring out some travel plans.

Posted by: Meagen Ridley at July 25, 2008 11:56 AM

1 - I can take being screwed by the US Government, SLC parking enforcement and even college football BCS (Go Utes!) but I draw the line at bending over for movie theaters.
2 - What ever happened to Vicky the robot in Small Wonder????
3 - Definitely depends on WHAT is floating. There are a lot of things made of plastic I wouldn't touch regardless of where it resides.
4 - Answering these questions of course.

Q 1: POPCORN: I rarely buy any refreshments at the movies. For the longest time, I used to go see a movie every Saturday morning at the 1st show of the day. I saw more movies, paid a cheaper price and didin't spend (waste) money on popcorn or soda.

Q 2: CHILD ACTOR: I always had a crush on Ricky Schroeder of Silver Spoons. He did a few TV specials & then a starring stint on NYPD Blue. I've seen most of these type of specials, so... I'm OK in this regard.

Q 3: BEACH GARBAGE: I was in Key West earlier this month & noticed garbaged - mostly plastic - that had washed ashore and piled up in trees & shrubs. I wanted to do something, but... it seemed a bigger task than I was up to.

Q 4: PRESSING CONCERN: I most am concerned about raising money for the down payment for a building for the gay lesbian center.

1. I allow my wife to smuggle via purse mule. And if she needs help snacking I won't let her down and assist.

2. All the ones that ever crossed my mind were covered by VH1 or something. Seems that Hollywood lifestyle is a good way of f'ing up kids - better than leaded paint.

3. Yeah probably, I hate seeing that and I know plastic kinda sucks. I'm no liberal wiener but not pissing where you sleep is a no brainer

4. Not procrastinating at work....woops

Posted by: Aaron at July 25, 2008 12:06 PM

1) Buying treats at a movie is for special occasions. But nothing beats sour patch kids and a coke. yummy!
2) I have no idea...
3) I want to say that I am a better person and I would be picking up any un-describable piece of garbage. But truthfully, I wouldn't touch any garbage that has been floating in the ocean for who knows how long.
4) My most pressing concern is that my jaw keeps locking and it hurts!

Posted by: Ashley at July 25, 2008 12:37 PM

1. Since I have gotten married we have started smuggling candy and drinks into the movies. We just cant justify paying 4.25 for a small bag of sour patch kids, M&M's, Mike and Ikes, etc.

2. Ummm.... I really never followed or cared to much about where actors are now. If there are any it would have been the kid from Even Stevens but he has been in every other movie.

3. Okay I am going ot be honest with you here; I would collect it if there was trash can near by but if I had to hike to throw the garbage away I would probably just keep on swimming and not worry about it. I will try to make an effort to clean up the trash floating by from now on.

4. Since I was recently laid off I am now focused on going to school full time and working full time with a separate company. The main problem is will I be able to carry a 3.5 or higher this semester by taking on a bigger work load?

Q1 - Popcorn and Candy: Usually I just try to avoid buying anything in the theater. But if I get to feeling crazy, I'll bend over and take it for a drink and nachos. I've smuggled a drink only once, and boy, did it ever make me feel ALIVE!

Q2 - Then & Now: Never been very interested in the lives of celebrities. But sometimes I wonder what the robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still is up to. Maybe they brought him back for the remake? Either that or he's been recycled into a few dozen soda cans :(

Q3 - Pollution: Depends on my mood at the time. Once when I was young, I fished this nasty dirty plastic bag out of Utah lake using a huge stick.

Q4 - Right Now: I went golfing yesterday during my lunch break and my right arm and shoulder has been having its weird nerve pains ever since. I'm hoping it doesn't affect my poker game tonight.

1) I almost always sneak in my treats to the movie. My wife once brought 2 gotta have it cold stone ice creams into a movie. Amazing.

2) Winnie Cooper.

3) I would remove the plastic as long as it wasn't too nasty.

4) Deciding what I am going to eat for dinner tonight.

Posted by: Zirker at July 25, 2008 3:11 PM

1. Due to such rediculous prices at the theater, I will smuggle in my own snack. Usually, though, I don't really eat at the movies, unless someone else buys popcorn, then I'll have a handful or two.

2. Hmm...whatever happened to...I can't think of anyone at the moment. But it's always interesting to find out what those former child stars are doing now. I wonder what someone who was famous as a child and no longer acts for a living ends up doing for a living.

3. It depends on what type of trash floats by. If it's a plastic bag or bottle I'd pick it up, but anything nasty I won't touch. The beach I go to is pretty clean. It's such a shame that so much waste gets thrown into the oceans.

4. Employment. Major life goals.

Posted by: Vera at July 25, 2008 3:12 PM

OK, my answers are posted on my blog.

Posted by: Cat. at July 25, 2008 3:47 PM

1. Usually neither. I'm not a bit snacky person, as anyone who's visited my place would be able to tell you.

2. Not particularly.

3. The trunks I wear have pockets, so as long as it wasn't too big, I probably would.

4. Whether my job, which I love, is safe.

Hey FBs - Happy Saturday!

How goes it, Mike? When do you respond to your loyal followers on all of their insightful responses? R U just gathering data for your next book? Don't be Oz behind the big curtain!!!

Q1. In response to this question, I will quote Jimmy Buffet from his Fruitcakes CD..."I want my Junior Mints... I don't want a 12lb. Nestles Crunch for 25 dollars! I want Junior Mints!!!".

Q2. Don't care about child actors/actresses.

Q3. On the topic of garbage on ocean shore lines... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LAZY PEOPLE WHO WON'T PICK UP GARBAGE??? This is a sensitive topic for a conservative blogger who loves the environment.

First of all, whenever I am on the water - yes, on a boat and living on the water... My husband and I stop and pick of garbage floating by. We have wildlife in our home area who we would hate to envision a death associated with our laziness/over-indulgence.

Second of all, my husband and I were blessed to visit the Arctic region not too long ago. Would you believe that in an area that is inhabited by mostly polar bear, reindeer and walrus, our traveling tour picked up PEPSI bottles, MOUNTAIN DEW bottles, six pack plastics rings, rubber gloves and several other things that hit home about how strong our global tidal currents are. Our travel group collected 5-10 LARGE garbage bags of trash that had NOTHING to do with Arctic life.

Sad. Pick up the trash people. By the way, we were in the Keys not long ago, too. We stopped our kyaak's to pick up trash. Why shouldn't these people on your site?

Q4. I worry about the state of the US - more so these days. I feel that we are headed on a path of losing our freedom. People are getting brain-washed by Obama saying pretty things without any history of action. Meanwhile, the government is standing poised and and ready to bail out all of those out there who do not know how to save money, spend what they have in their bank accounts and live according to their means.

We are turning into a nation of people who will not take responsibility for our own actions and that scares the life of out of me.

Recently, I had a conversation with a girl 4-5 years older than me, whose family escaped communist Vietnam at a time when I was able to live my ypung life in love and security. She and her family of 9 escaped a Communist regime who took her father's successful business away from him based on false accusations of drug dealing and public wrong-doing. He was in prison for 5 years and sacrificed everything to get his family to America after he had any chance of escape.

Now, she is so happy to be here with her own family safe from prosecution. We agreed how lucky we were to be living in America.

How many of your bloggers truly appreciate their life in America?

Q1 -- Popcorn! Have to have popcorn. Sometimes it's the only reason I even go to the movies.

Q2 -- Maybe Eve Plumb, poor Jan Brady who suffered under the shadow of Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!

Q3 -- I'd like to think I would. I believe I've done it before. But that could just be wishful thinking.

Q4 -- My son getting ready to ship off to Afghanistan in August. He seems to be looking forward to it, but it's a concern to me.
