Four For Friday

Q1 - Prayer: With the many challenges people experience during the holiday season, The Salvation Army in Spokane, Washington, has decided to give the red kettles an additional role: collecting prayer requests from people in the community. Would you place a prayer request into a Salvation Army kettle, and if so, would you feel compelled to make a donation while doing so?

Q2 - News: Katie Couric anchors the CBS Evening News; Brian Williams anchors the NBC Nightly News; and now, Diane Sawyer will be anchoring ABC's World News Tonight. What role does a national or local news anchor's personality play in your decision to watch a particular news channel or show?

Q3 - Taking a Break: Tiger Woods says he's taking "an indefinite break" from professional golf because of, well, you know. If you could choose three other athletes, politicians, or public figures to take a similar indefinite break, who would you like to see on that list?

Q4 - Gift Card: According to a leading research and advisory firm, spending on restaurant, retailer, and other gift cards will fall slightly in 2009, from $91 billion to $87 billion, of which nearly 6% (some $5.75 billion) will go unused by card recipients. When you receive a gift card, do you tend to use it once for a purchase in an amount less than the card's total value and never use the card again, or do you use the card to the fullest extent possible?

Comments:

1. Not being a believer in the power of prayer, I'd have to say "no."

2. Little to none.

3. Dick Cheney, Michelle Bachman, the entire Kardashian/Jenner family

4. I generally try to use it up in one visit so I don't forget about using it all up.

1. Not likely, I'd be more likely to just ask friends and family to pray.

2. I generally am not a fan of any of the national personalities, but I really do like Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart.

3. Kanye West, CNN, Fox News.

4. I try to spend it in one shot.

Q1 - Prayer: If someone I know is asking for extra prayers, I'd definitely consider it. And yes, I'd probably be sure to carry cash on me that day so I could make a donation.

Q2 - News: I've always liked Brian Williams, even more after seeing him on The Tonight Show back in 1996 when he appeared after Cher, and Cher kept giving him looks like she wanted to tear his face off. But truth be told, I rarely watch the news, and when I do it's typically local only.

Q3 - Taking a Break: Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, and all of the U.S. Congress.

Q4 - Gift Card: I have never failed yet to use up the entirety of any gift card. Depending on the amount deposited on the card, I'll use it all in one jolt (up to about $25 I do pretty well with), while larger amounts I may make several visits. It once took me nearly two years to spend everything on a gift card, but I did it!

Q1 - I don't pray in the traditional sense, I do hold good thoughts when requested.

Q2 - We watch NBC mostly out of habit. We like the Tampa NBC news station and we stay with it for national news.

Q3 - Congress, Rosie O'Donnell, Ellen DeGenerius (sp?), Jessie Jackson, Congress, and Congress.

Q4 - I always spend up the value of a gift card and usually add a bit more for something that I would not pay full price for.

1. I think it's a good idea, but I would not put a prayer in the kettle. However, I always try to donate something when I walk by a Salvation Army kettle.

2. Depend what I am looking for. If I am looking for political news, I turn to NPR. If I am looking for "news" for my amusement, I will tune into NBC Nightly News.

3. Lieberman, Sarah Palin, and Speidi. Wait, I guess that's 4.

4. I try to use gift cards right away so I don't pop up in the "unused" stat;)
