Four For Friday - With Video

Q1 - Punch Buggy: About 50 years ago, a single punch launched a game we all know and either love or hate: Punch Buggy (also called punch bug or slug bug). After an exhaustive search, the folks at Volkswagen claim to have found the game's inventor, Sluggy Patterson (see video below). Have you ever played Punch Buggy? Regardless of whether you have or not, do you enjoy car games like Punch Buggy, and if you do, what car game is your favorite?

Q2 - Hometown: On Facebook, all members are asked to list a Hometown. When you're asked online to fill in a location for Hometown, do you put the town where you grew up or where you live? Is your response different if someone asks you in person about your Hometown?

Q3 - State of the Union: According to Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, the President of the United States "...shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." Nearly every President since Dr. Thomas Woodrow Wilson has made the State of the Union report in the form of a speech delivered personally before a joint session of Congress. Did you watch President Barack Hussein Obama II's speech on Wednesday evening? If so, what did you think?

Q4 - iPad: Apple unveiled the iPad earlier this week, a 0.5 inches thick device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, looking at photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more. According to Apple co-founder & CEO Steve Jobs, the iPad is the company's "...most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price." Do you see a "need" for the iPad in your business or personal life? Do you want one?

Q1- Who doesn't love Punch Buggy? With two bratty brothers growing up, it was the best game a girl could hope for! Actually, we all had quite a bit of fun with it- and surprisingly, no one got hurt!

Q2- Hometown is Albuquerque, which is where I was born and reside now. Makes it simple, I suppose.

Q3- Yes, I watched it. Thought it would never end, and I was almost right (by the way, is it still going????)

Q4- That iPad looks AMAZING!!! I think I "need" a couple for work and home!

First to comment!

Q1 - Growing up with 7 older brothers, I wasn't a huge fan of the "slug-bug no slug backs." And it was never the arm, it was always mid thigh, which was the worst charlie-horse imaginable. When my brother and I drove to Alaska (2,600 miles in 45 hours), we got a little bored and ended up creating some games. My favorite was on a windy road and the goal was to be the first person to see the next mile-marker sign. You count up how many you saw first and you win. (It's more difficult if you're the driver.)

Q2 - I don't have a Facebook account, but ran into this situation a year ago on vacation. Someone asked where I was from and I quickly said Oklahoma, where I live now, then added, "But I'm originally from Idaho." Maybe you should state the place where you have lived the longest?

Q3 - I watched the end. Was not impressed. And that's all I have to say about that (please add your own Forest Gump twang).

Q4 - I was waiting all day to get the details of the new iPad. I think it's amazing and I definitely want one. But, do I really need one? I currently do not own a portable DVD player, a Kindle, a daily planner, an address book or a portable gaming system of any kind. So, when the day comes that I decided to buy any of those products, whether for me or my son (road trips in the car, plane rides, etc.), I will most definitely be getting the iPad.

I guess Rosanna beat me to the punch, no pun intended.

Q1 - Punch Buggy: Been a long time since I played that (How long? Who gives a $^!# how long ago! You asked me a question...) We always called it "Slug Bug" here in Utah.

Q2 - Hometown: Well, let's see, if somebody asks me my "hometown," I usually respond with where I grew up. If somebody asks where I'm from originally, I'll ask "You mean where I was born, or where I grew up?" Because I only spent a few months where I was born, I don't really consider myself as being from there. Besides, people kinda freak out when I say, "The center of the universe."

Q3 - State of the Union: I was flipping through channels and was like, "Oh, there's a State of the Union address going on? Maybe I'll watch some... nah, I'll watch this Nova episode instead." So when I clicked in to watch Nova, wouldn't you know it, they replaced it with the State of the Union address. I caught the President saying that America never gives up (Korea, Vietnam, and a few others aside), and that he'll never give up. Then it was over. Then I changed channels.

Q4 - iPad: It's kind of cool. But being that it's essentially a larger version of the iPod Touch, I'm not particularly impressed with the so-called magical technology. Don't see any "need" for it at all in my life. I kind of want one, but I imagine I would rarely use it, so not really. The politician in me wants to either praise it or trash it... depending on the audience I'm speaking to.

Q1: Ah yes, slug bug. A perfectly legitimate reason to punch my sister without recourse.

Q2: I usually mention where I grew up...cause I'm not all that fond of where I live now as a 'hometown'.

Q3: Didn't watch it.

Q4: I had to stop thinking about the iPad as soon as I started, because the only thing that came to mind was some kind of feminine hygiene product.

1. Yes I play slug bug, but only when I am with people who can't hit hard... like my wife.

2. I list where I live now.

3. I watched bits and pieces. I find it hard to trust anything Pres. Obama says. He's a salesman that is telling us what we want to hear but not really following through...not a fan.

4. It's cool but not really that useful for my line of work. What apple really needs to make is a reading tablet that is better than the kindle. I'd buy that.

q1) yes I used to play a lot as a kid
q2) I mention where I grew up
q3) watched a portion of it. I'm glad he addressed the recent supreme court decision, which I find ridiculous.
q4) I was interested to find out about it. I would want one to play with, but I think after a couple of months I wouldn't find it very useful.

Posted by: Ryan R at January 29, 2010 9:56 AM

1. Yes, but I don't play it any more. The one habit (not really a game) that persisted for a long time with me is scratching the ceiling of the car as you go through a yellow light. I did that for years.

2. I lived in Utah from age 0-8 and 18-27 (and counting), but I claim Cleveland, OH as my hometown because I spent my most formative years there (12-18). It's the place that I self-identify with the most.

3. I heard about 30 minutes of it on the radio. I think that Obama talks extremely well, and I usually find myself nodding my head and really wanting to believe him on things like bi-partisan efforts in Congress, etc. It isn't until I hear different points of view afterward that I start to question some of the numbers and proposals he cites in the speech. The power of good speaking, I guess.

4. No. Call me up when a similar, Android-based tablet shows up in a few years. Then I'll be tempted.

1 - Slug bug got me and my brother through many family vacations as children. Love it.
2 - I was born and raised in American Fork and list that location. When I meet someone in person I simply say I'm from Utah and then try to explain to that persons amazement how I grew up in Utah as a non-Mormon. That conversation gets old really quick.
3 - Had to watch my Jazz destroy Portland so its on my DVR queued up for this weekend.
4 - Looks cool but I can't see a need that it would fulfill that my iPhone or Powerbook couldn't handle.

Posted by: Tyson at January 29, 2010 4:31 PM

Q1 - Yes, I played unwilling. I had a sister who was almost 10 years younger than I. She played it when she was about 5 or 6, but I would get into trouble if I hit her very hard. Then her daughter played it about 8 years ago. She also played PT Cruzer, gonna leave a bruzer. Going anyplace with her really sucked!!!

Q2 - I answer with the town I grew up in. There are a lot of people here in Sarasota from elsewhere.

Q3 - I did not watch; the State of the Union message has become a campaign speech for programs that the President wants to shove down our throats.

Q4 - It looks cool, but I am pretty happy with my netbook. Did anybody notice that Jack Bauer used one last Monday night; before it was unveiled.

Posted by: Mike Linn at January 29, 2010 5:40 PM

Q1- Yes I've played punch buggy. We also played the license plate game where you spotted out of state plates and punched the other person the value of either the last letter or number. My favorite game in Texas I believe made up by an ex-girlfriend of mine was the Windmill Game... Spot the windmill and get a point, 2 points for broken windmills. A fun game road-tripping between Houston and Austin.

Q2-On Facebook I list my current town of Laguna Beach (though I've only lived in OC for about 9 months now). Organically when I meet people I tell them I'm originally from Texas, but have lived many places since I've been in my 30's.

Q3- Watched the first 30 minutes or so. This guy is a smooth talker... What is it with his pauses right on cue? I don't trust him or any of the other options we've had. I feel extremely bad for the people who really stood behind him and supported him. I'd feel pretty let down. I loved the statement he made in the beginning about how bad everything was handed to him.
Where are the statistics on these 2 million new people employed?????

Q4- Something I could definitely live without... but, will own one for sure and probably be willing to wait in line for it. I can't wait! I gotta have it!

Posted by: Jason at January 29, 2010 7:44 PM

1. Yes, but not in a long time, we called it slug bug.

2. I list where I grew up, until age 8 so I don't know why I list it as that city, I guess it's where I lived the longest at one time.

3. I did not watch it at all and I have not read anything about it, I'm a rebel like that.

4. Meh, I let Stu drool over new technology and if he's impressed then I go check it out. I'm lazy like that.

Posted by: Meadow at January 29, 2010 10:41 PM

1. Slug bug had started to die out by the time I hit Jr high and high school cos they'd stopped making Bugs back in the 70's? I do remember playing it and Slam Van though.

2. I consider 'hometown' to be where a person did most of their growing up rather than where they were born or where they currently live.

3. I watched part of it. To be honest, most SOTU's over the past decade+ have been severely lacking in substance. This was better than most in no small part because Obama can actually speak well. I prefer to watch any SOTU more to see the reactions of the members of the opposing party. I heartily agreed with his position on the Supreme Court ruling and DADT.

4. It's interesting, but other than the 'gee whiz' factor there's no pressing need for it. Better to wait and let the prices come down/quality and features go up before buying.
