Four For Friday for April 23

Q1 - Parents: What's the most important thing you learned from your parents that you hope to pass along to your children or young people you mentor?

Q2 - Traffic: Have you ever diverted your route because of something you heard on a radio or television traffic report?

Q3 - Groceries: Do you make a grocery shopping list as you run out of items or notice you're running low, or do you make a list right before leaving to go to the grocery store?

Q4 - Dinner: What did you have for dinner last night and was it fulfilling? If not fulfilling did it at least hold some nutritional value?

Q1 - Parents: That it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks about you. The only person you have to be true to is yourself, and you more than anyone else know the difference between right and wrong.

Q2: Traffic: Never; I have never changed or altered my route because of a traffic report. I hear them all the time and it often strikes me as odd that I'd change my route before leaving the house because of something I wouldn't encounter because of the time difference between when its reported and when I'd arrive at that point. When I'm in my car, if I hear about an incident that's up ahead, there's never anything I can do about it because I'm either already impacted by it or because I do not know the roads well enough to make spur of the moment Svengali-like changes to my route.

Q3 - Groceries: I make my grocery list the day of or right before I head to the store.

Q4 - Dinner: I had duck, beef, salmon, soup, and other stuff at an Earth Day dinner that was very yummy and nutritious.

Q1 - Don't procrastinate, get things done. And make sure you are happy and doing things that make you happy. Also, don't pick your nose and definitely don't eat it if you do pick your nose. Gross.

Q2 - Nope, I don't listen to the radio or any traffic report. I may take a different road because of past experience of traffic (State street sucks, Orem Blvd and Geneva Road baby!), but not because of a traffic report.

Q3 - Make a quick list right before getting in the car to go to the store. We do have a notepad on the fridge to make a list, but let's be honest who has the time to write anything down when you're eating the last piece of string cheese?

Q4 - I had two 5-layer burritos from Taco Bell while watching the beginning of the NFL draft with my brother. It was his treat. Yes it was filling, and yes the all-natural-never-processed nacho cheese, sour cream, beef and tortillas help plenty of nutritional value ;).

Q1 - It's hard to narrow it down to just one, but I feel like that golden rule thing was pretty well bashed into my brain from a young age.

Q2 - Yes, all the time. Both in Chicago and here in SLC. SLC is so easy to navigate because of the grid system that it's usually not a big deal to hop off the freeway and find an alternate route.

Q3 - Right before. But I have to confess that I don't do much of the grocery shopping anymore. (I do try to sneak 'beer' onto the list though)

Q4 - BBQ chicken breast and potato salad. Fulfilling, probably not nutritious. Those terms seem to be polar opposites don't they?

Q1 - Parents: Discipline. With it, you can accomplish virtually anything. My father made E6 in the Navy in 4 years which is, according to Navy policy, impossible. I talked back to my drill instructor and lived to tell the tale. Also considered impossible in some circles.

Q2 - Traffic: Extremely rarely. Twice in fact I think. Once because I had heard that the freeway had been shut down so I, along with the rest of the world, was forced onto the back roads. My normally 40-minute drive took over 3 hours. I was stuck right next to a Burger King for at least 20 minutes. I was tempted to just park my car in the road right there and run in to grab a meal while I waited for traffic to move. Another time I heard about a dead horse that was holding up traffic. I might have changed routes, except I really wanted to see the dead horse.

Q3 - Groceries: The closest thing to a grocery list I've ever made was for a fast-food run for the family. 2 cheeseburger combos, 1 crispy chicken sandwich, etc.

Q4 - Dinner: In-N-Out cheeseburger, fries well done, Dr. Pepper. It might have been the healthiest meal I had all week.

q1) Have faith, be honest, love others, do what you know is right.
q2) Probably a few times, none recent enough that I remember them. I don't travel during rush hour much.
q3) Right before going.
q4) Little Caesars pizza. Not really fulfilling. I was noticing that they are starting to skimp on the cheese lately. The only way to increase profit on $5 pizza is to reduce costs. Less cheese equals more profit (in the short-term anyway).

Q1 - Parents: Growing up on a small farm, my dad always made us work our butts off. At the time I absolutely hated it, but now greatly value the work ethic he instilled in us. Now as a parent, I hope to get a few acres of land and do the same thing.

Q2 - Traffic: No, but my brother-in-law calls me all the time when he hits traffic on the freeway and tells me to check the news for any accidents to see if he should take a different route. Get an iPhone already!

Q3 - Groceries: I make it as I run out or else I will forget. Things like dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, or ketchup are impossible to remember when you walk into the store.

Q4 - Dinner: Funny story. I get flyers put on my door almost daily for local carry-out restaurants. I usually throw them away without looking at them, but last night I took a look cause the flyer was real nice, professional. Anyway, we ordered a thin crust pepperoni pizza and it was great. I'll definitely eat there again. As for nutritional value, not so much.

Q1 - Continuous personal development and progression. There is no plateau where you are allowed to say your done.

Q2 - I used to all the time. When I traveled 800-900 miles a week, efficiency was a major priority and sitting in traffic jams was not on the top of my list.

Q3 - My grocery list consists of whatever I feel like purchasing at the store at the time.

Q4 - Dinner consisted of watching the NFL Draft, and 3 playoff basketball games. No time to eat!

Q1 - Parents: Dad taught me to put myself first. "If you don't prioritize yourself who will?" and "you gotta take care of 1 before you can take care of 2." I hope I can teach my children how to prioritize themselves without crossing into self-centered territory.

Q2 - Traffic: All the time. I look at sigalert.com before I take the freeways and always have a plan B.

Q3 - Groceries: Little bit of both.

Q4 - Dinner: Dinner was not filling, and salad notwithstanding, had very little nutritional value. But I'd sooner go to bed hungry rather than scarf frozen taquitos.

1 - "What goes around, comes around."
2 - Almost daily. The iPhone Map's traffic overlay provides the most accurate info.
3 - A blend of both.
4 - Now that I think about it, I didn't get around to dinner last night. Does two Heineken's and a dip in the hot tub count?

Q1 - Life isn't fair. Most things are out of our control. Get over it and move on.

Q2 - All the time. I live in the exurbs of a Really Big Midwestern City, so we listen to traffic reports somewhat obsessively when we are driving anywhere.

Q3 - Both. I write down the 'weird stuff' as we get low, but I make a full list just before leaving the house.

Q4 - I had a corned beef panini and chicken/rice soup, I think. I ate with Beast at Six Balls. It was the usual level of yum. Not overly nutritious, but...oh well.

Parents: Save for a rainy day and don't blow your money on things that don't matter.

Traffic: I do occasionally but I have to know the alternate route as I don't have a GPS and hate getting lost.

Groceries: I make a list for things like cleaning supplies, but not so much for groceries unless it's recipe specific.

Dinner: Burgers and cookout food at a co-worker's retirement shindig. Fulfilling and a pretty good time as well.

1. In order to gain respect, you must give respect.
2. When I lived in the "real" world, I always followed traffic reports. Where I am now, there is no traffic, so there are no traffic reports.
3. I make a list as I run out of things.
4. Pizza. Not much nutrition, but it tasted good.
