Four For Friday for April 30, 2010
Q1 - Cooking: Have you ever created a meal you thought would be great but upon tasting it realized otherwise? What did you make and what went wrong, and have you attempted to make the same meal since?
Q2 - Green: Being green's expensive! If money was not an issue, how far would you choose to go in making your life green?
Q3 - Drilling: Does the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico affect how you feel about offshore drilling?
Q4 - Censorship: About seven in ten Americans (70%) disagree with the recent Comedy Central decision to censor part of a South Park episode deemed offensive to some Muslims, a new Zogby survey finds. The decision followed a warning that the series' creators could be murdered because of their depiction of Muhammad. Generally speaking, do you agree or disagree with Comedy Central's decision to censor parts of a South Park episode deemed offensive to some Muslims?

Cooking: Yes, and unfortunately, this happens to me more often than not. I'll have this great idea of how to make something and it'll turn out flavorless. The latest was a marinated chicken breast. I soaked that thing for about 48 hours or so and it still tasted like chicken (no sign of the marinade whatsoever). When it comes to cooking, I'm a lost cause.
Green: If money were no object, my car would be electric and I would pay a premium price for products and services that took a reduced toll on the environment.
Drilling: I believe as others do that we need to break the monopoly on oil by diversifying the fuels used to power vehicles. Flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), would essentially boost the supply-to-demand ratio by giving consumers access to a greater supply of fuels (ethanol, methanol, gas, and electricity) while slashing oil consumption. The net effect would be a more reliable and affordable supply of fuels, and of course, less drilling here and elsewhere.
Censorship: Count me among the 70 percent, unless of course the show's creators communicated to Comedy Central that they indeed felt threatened, in which case I'm okay with it.
1. I don't cook a ton. But when I do, I like to mix it up a bit and try adding things to my Ramen Noodles. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not. I can tell you that chicken flavored Ramen with chili, mustard, and tapatio is a win-win.
2. If money wasn't an issue, I would do almost everything in my power to better treat the environment. Although, if money wouldn't be the issue, some people wouldn't become environmentally friendly because "everyone is doing it". People do things just to be part of a small number doing them. Hope that makes sense.
3. There was a recent oil spill?
4. Disagree, if they don't like or support what the show is overall, then why have it on your network at all.
Q1 - Cooking: I have got to be one of the worst cooks ever! I once tried to make instant oatmeal, but accidentally boiled off all the water.
Q2 - Green: Well, I would not only build myself a super advanced green house, I would create an organization to implement affordable green housing all over the world, heavily research and implement green power alternatives, and design some sort of awesome sci-fi energy-collection flier that would hang out in the atmosphere and collect energy from natural phenomena such as the Northern Lights, solar winds, and peoples' lost chi. I would still drive a Corvette though!
Q3 - Drilling: I've recently though about going to Mexico to have several of my cavities filled. So... no?
Q4 - Censorship: Having watched the "Super Best Friends" episode, I can't say that I understand their decision. I say let 'em make fun of the man!
1- My friend and I tried to make these amazing lemon-chicken fajitas on a double date once. Problem was we didn't have a recipe and totally overpowered the dinner with lemon. It was terrible, the last of about 6 dates with that girl. Now I make fajitas all the time, but usually stick to the basic recipe on the pouch.
2- I think I'd go pretty far—hybrid vehicle, all organic foods, solar panels on the house, etc. etc. I try to do what the budget allows now, but that is pretty limited.
3- As disastrous as this event is, even Obama said domestic oil production continues to be "an important part of our overall strategy" but said "it must be done responsibly for the safety of our workers and our environment."
4- I disagree with the network decision, I say air the show. I also feel that the S.P. creators are pretty juvenile and arrogant. If S.P. continues to push the envelope like they have done and continue to do, don't be surprised to face either censorship from a network or threats from groups you are making jokes about.
1.I dont cook often enough to think of something off the top of my head. But I have ordered meals that have disappointed me for sure. About a month ago I ordered this amazing chicken noodley plate. When I got it tasted like propane. NO LIE, I had everyone else try it and everyone concurred. (I really thought it was how they cooked the chicken on a propane grill or something. I had the waiter take it back. He smelt it and agreed. He brought it to the manager and the manager said it was just the oil or sauce, and that it it just an acquired taste... well, they can keep it. I dont want it.
2. I would for sure have solar panels on the top of my house. I would get a fuel hybrid SUV :) I just hate the term "going green".. it is so trendy, almost like people recycle because it is the cool thing to do, instead of to actually make a difference. whatevs..
3. Well, I know that there are much less expensive ways to power things nowadays besides oil. It is the money the government is making off the oil that is keeping it around. I dont have a problem with drilling if it is the only solution. Everyone understands things like this are going to happen. But you cant get mad at the drilling companies. You got to find a better solution, and bring it to our government. But, you got to sell it to them ;)
4. I think it is ridiculous that a cartoon can upset someone that much. South Park was able to make fun of every religion out there and everything else, and everyone else could take it. (except Tom Cruise, he acted like a real bitch saying he wouldnt promote MI3 if Comedy Central played the Tom Cruise comes out of the closet episode.) If he would have just left it a lone I dont think it would have been as big of a deal, but it made everyone want to see it. However, if their are some Muslims out there that were really threatening the writers, I dont think cartoon writing should be a life threatening job, so why risk it.
Q1 - One story of epic cooking disaster my friends still make fun of me about, is the Beer Can Chicken. It's where you actually put a can of beer inside the chicken and the glorious beverage permeates through the meat. Well, turns out my grill was too small and the outside of the bird started to burn and the inside remained raw after a solid 3 hours of cooking. Later I figured out how to do it correctly by propping up the grill hood to allow some air circulation. I had some hungry friends that night, We ended up ordering pizza.
Q2 - I'd go pretty far. I feel a twinge of guilt every day during my commute to and from work. It just seems so wasteful. I'd love to live a completely independent and eco-friendly lifestyle.
Hey, Doba folks, Do me a favor and Wash your plastic-ware and toss it back in the drawer. That stuff just sits in a landfill after you used it for 6 seconds to put cream cheese on your bagel. Wash it. Put it back.
Q3 - I feel it's just another example of us needing to find alternatives to oil and coal. 28 coal miners died the previous week, and now 11 (or 12?) oil workers died and we have a massive eco-disaster on our hands. A company recently got a permit to do coal strip mining near bryce canyon national park... Why can't we just leave things be?
Q4 - Seems like Trey and Matt have offended just about everyone. It says something about our view of the muslim religion that we take their threats more seriously then all the other threats that have been made to them. Comedy Central wouldn't make much money if the shows creators were dead, so it was probably just a monetary decision.
q1: everything i think of cooking turns out absolutely amazing!
q2: i'd bike everywhere.
q3: yes.
q4: i'm guessing this decision has more to do with the network's concern for itself than the creators.
1. I made a savory pie that turned out to be more like a soup with a REALLY soggy crust. I've never tried that particular hot mess again.
2. Solar panels on the roof for energy generation, pay for green energy, etc. I'm not so big on the electric car thing. They aren't so much about zero emissions as exporting the emissions from the tailpipe to a power plant smokestack somewhere.
3. It's proof that we need more emphasis on alternative fuels. Also, I think that it's telling that all the "Drill baby, Drill," advocates have been conspicuously silent over the past week.
4. I tend to agree with Ryan that it was the network's concern for themselves more than for Parker and Stone. On the other hand, I think that the extreme lengths they went to to NOT portray Muhammed ridiculed him even more.
Q1 - Cooking: Thankfully, all of my food experiments have turned out quite delish.
Q2 - Green: I would eat organic only (especially meats and produce), and of course use the best (environmentally) building materials for my home money could buy. Last, I'd invest any amount to go off the grid.
Q3 - Drilling: Doesn't change a thing. I'm extreme, incidents like these kinda make me hate humans just a little and hope an "I Am Legend" like tragedy befalls us...we deserve earth's vengeance.
Q4 - Censorship: Count me among the 70. I don't think our culture should be held captive by the beliefs of others, especially if those beliefs discourage civil discourse and/or freedom of speech. Plus, Viacom is entertaining a serious double-standard. By their actions they're saying it's OK to make fun of Christians and Jews, but it's not OK to poke fun at Scientologists and Muslims (they relented on the Scientology episode).
