Four For Friday - the May 7th Edition

Q1 - Apprehension: Earlier this week, during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, a towel-waving Philadelphia Phillies baseball fan gained access to the field where he eluded security while running in circles in the outfield. After just 30 seconds of being on the field, the fan was subdued by a Philadelphia police officer who used a Taser stun gun to bring him down. While many people question the use of a stun gun to bring down a prankster, Major League Baseball players have said it's an appropriate action, because they fear for their safety. What do you think... should stun guns be used to stop the occasional jokester, or should fans entering the field of play during games will be apprehended by team security as they always have (by tackle)?

Q2 - Loans: In Long Beach, California, the City Council unanimously voted to loan the local Cal Worthington Ford dealership $600,000 so it could keep its doors open and 120 local residents employed. According to news reports, the dealership generates $1.8 million in tax revenue each year and plans to use the loan to finance its expansion plans. Do you think cities or municipalities should lend money to local businesses as they've done in Long Beach, California?

Q3 - Summer 2010 Movies: Which of the following summer 2010 movies are you most interested in seeing (either in the theatre or on DVD)... Robin Hood (opens May 14); Shrek 4 Forever After (opens May 21); Prince of Persia The Sands of Time (opens May 28); Sex and the City 2 (opens May 28); Killers (opens June 4); Marmaduke (opens June 4); Splice (opens June 4); Get Him to the Greek (opens June 11); Karate Kid (opens June 11); The A Team (opens June 11); Jonah Hex (opens June 18); Toy Story 3 (opens June 18); Grown Up (opens June 25); Twilight 3 Eclipse (opens June 30); Knight and Day (opens July 2); Leaves of Grass (opens July 2); Despicable Me (opens July 9); Inception (opens July 16); The Sorcerer's Apprentice (opens July 16); Salt (opens July 23); Cats and Dogs 2 (open July 30); Get Low (opens July 30); I Love You Philip Morris (opens July 30); Little Fockers (opens July 30); The Other Guys (opens August 6); Eat Pray Love (opens August 13).

Q4 - Humor: On the heels of its decision to censor an episode of "South Park" that included a depiction of the prophet Muhammad, Comedy Central said this week it has a cartoon series about Jesus Christ in the works (apparently, "JC" depicts Christ as a regular guy who moves to New York City to escape his father's enormous shadow). Are you offended by the very notion of this new cartoon series (enough so that you wouldn't watch), or could you care less and/or are actually looking forward to watching "JC" when it airs later this year?

Comments:

1 - taze 'em up.
2 - if it helps he community then I'm all for creative solutions. It gets tricky involving government which I am not particularly fond of doing.
3 - I don't go to the movies often... so as soon as netflix has them they may find their way into my queue. Robin Hood is the only one that looks interesting to me, I don't know the majority of them.
4 - I think South Park is lame so I would not watch it either way. Their only doing the controversial episodes to bump ratings and profitability, there are better things to do or watch in my opinion.

Q1 - Apprehension: I figured a chubby and/or slow cop would've done that long ago. Plus some might argue tackling carries higher risk of injury to fan and officer. So I guess I'm saying "Tase 'em!"

Q2 - Loans: I can't really say. I will say as a Long Beach resident Cal Worthington Ford has been around for as long as I've been alive, it's an institution and I'd be sad to see them close.

Q3 - Summer 2010 Movies: In order; Little Fockers, Karate Kid. I also want to get around to seeing Kick-Ass and Avatar.

Q4 - Humor: I'm not offended by the notion of the show, and I'd probably be a huge fan. But the magnitude of the hypocrisy raises my ire, so I'll boycott the series, let my viewership habits cast my vote.

Q1 - Taser away. Kid shouldn't be on the field. It is safer for the security and it doesn't do damage to the kid.
Q2 - Gov shouldn't lend money to enterprise. It is slippery slope that knows no end. It could make sense in a case or two but it would be abused quickly. Gov must stay out of enterprise. let things fail. Guess what - another successful company will take over the dealership and increase the tax base. It will just take some time but the invisible hand will do its work.

Q3 - I ain't much for going to movies but I will see Robin Hood and Toy Story 3 this summer

Q4 - JC sounds offensive but free speech is alive and well in America. I won't be interested in watching (just like must stuff on TV), but that doesn't stop them producing it. Just rate it appropriately and put it in an adult hour of programming.

1. Anyone who runs on the field in a situation like this pretty much gets what s/he deserves either way, but I am pretty positive I'd rather deal with the aftereffects of tasing over the aftereffects of being tackled. Can someone please explain to me why this is such a big deal? Is it that it looks so much worse to see someone spasming than seeing them under a pile of 5 police officers? Really?

2. Wow, no. I thought the U.S. was all about free-market economy, but corporations are sure relying an awful lot on the government for handouts. Hmmm, was that a white Cadillac I just saw GM driving away in...?

3. Robin Hood, Shrek, and Toy Story are the only ones that look remotely like possibilities. Much as I like Julia Roberts, I'd rather eat the film reels that watch that movie.

4. No, I'm not offended, but I'm also extremely unlikely to watch it. I'm pretty sure Jesus--the real one--can stand up for himself and my time can be better spent serving Him in ways that don't make His followers look like idiots.

Q1 - The tackle is always funnier. It's great because baseball security is always the old fat guys on the force that get the 'perks' of doing that job and they can never catch the kid sprinting around. I say Taze away. that's funny too!

Q2 - I think it's a sticky situation to get in. This might cause favoritism for one company over another and makes 'who ya know' that much more important

Q3 - Wow. after reading that list... NONE of em! maybe Robin Hood, but I'm not expecting much. I'm excited for The Expendables and Machete!

Q4 - JC sounds good to me! Anyone read Lamb? Great book about Jesus' buddy growing up.

1. TAZER: This is an absurd use of police force. I posted this on facebook this week. i don't see why the cops could not, as a first response, simply run/guide the man off the field or arrest him using physical or verbal force. Some cops are tazer-happy and some are trigger-happy. Violence should not be a 1st-response in a criminal trespass situation at a ball park. PLEASE!

2. LOANS: Why could this dealership not get a private loan through standard commercial or bank channels? These means should be exhausted prior to any "bailout" being considered.

3. MOVIES: I haven't given much thought to them yet. Little Fockers seems to be a must-see for me, though.

4. SOUTH PARK & JC: I loved both Muhammed episodes and think Comedy Central management are cowards for giving in to such radical demands. I love the Jesus character on South Park. i probably will watch a few episodes of the JC show to see if it's worth watching.

A1 - Apprehension: "Don't tase me bro!" Did a quick google search and found this.

Between September 1999 and October 2004, there were 73 cases of deaths of people soon after having been shocked with Tasers.

About 45% of these were attributed to excited delirium (caused by a subject's interaction with high levels of drug-use), around 30% were as a result of pre-existing cardiovascular conditions or other pre-existing medical conditions, The remainder occurred as a result of head injuries sustained due to falling after being shocked.

So my answer is no more stun guns! Not saying that tackling is the way to go either but might be a little less drastic.

A2 - Loans: "Go see Cal go see Cal, Come see my dog spot... Open till' midnight!" Even though I would never buy a car from Cal I think a lot of people depend on his service. To be in business for as long as they have been I think it was a good idea for Long Beach to give them the loan.

A3 - Summer 2010 Movies: "Wax on, wax off. Squish just like grape" Karate Kid hands down. I grew up watching those movies.

A4 - Humor: "You killed Kenny" I could kind of care less about South Park. Sometimes they are funny and sometimes they are just mean. It's hard to justify watching the show sometimes.

Q1 - Apprehension: I'm of the mind that if you decide on an action, particularly one that is against the rules, you gotta deal with the consequences.

Q2 - Loans: Hmm... I think I like Blaine's answer on this.

Q3 - Summer 2010 Movies: I gotta get my excessive violence fix, so I'm all for The Expendables and A-Team.

Q4 - Humor: I'm afraid to watch JC for fear that I might actually find it funny! So no, I won't be watching it.

1. People shouldn't rush the field, but on the other hand I think that cops are developing a penchant for using tazers in too many situations. I get that it's easiest for them to jolt people into submission with electricity, but I get the feeling that it's becoming a more socially acceptable version of beating someone with a billy club.

2. The problem with something like this is that it's a breeding ground for corruption and sweetheart deals and opens up the local government to charges of favoritism and rewarding failing businesses at the expense of prospering ones. I'm guessing that the local Chevy and Chrysler dealerships will be up in arms if they aren't already.

3. Wow. Out of the 27 movies listed, there's only one that I'd even be interested in seeing on dvd. And jsut as an aside, there are FAR too many remakes of old movies and (even worse) crappy tv shoes being made. And Hollywood wonders why their revenues keep declining...

4. Indifferent. CC is known for short-lived shows of questionable taste--anyone remember the crapulence of "That's My Bush?"

1. Tase away. When people make stupid choices like that, they give up the right to choose what form the consequences take (within reason, of course).

2. Gotta go with Blaine on this one. Let it fail, and let someone else fill in the gap.

3. Toy Story 3 was the only one on that list that's a must-see, though I'm moderately intrigued by Robin Hood.

4. I'm not a fan of using the more sensitive parts of anyone's religious beliefs as fodder for disrespectful media. That's a pretty subjective statement, I know, but there's simply no getting around the fact that religious belief is, by nature, highly subjective. I wouldn't mock anyone's beliefs to their face, and I don't see how television makes things any different.

Movies - You missed a summer movie on your list. 8: The Mormon Proposition, opens today in limited cities across the country. I need someone to drive with me to LA to see it...
