Number of U.S. public school districts that have adopted a class in which the Bible is mandated a primary textbook.
Posted by Mikal at June 28, 2004 3:39 PMOne of the best classes I took in college was "The Bible as Literature." The teacher was marvelous: He made it very clear from day 1 that we would not touch on religious implications... only literary, narrative, and structural qualities.
And despite some of the best efforts of students, he stuck to his guns. There were a few frustrated folks in the class... but most of us genuinely enjoyed the class.
I wish I had the confidence the same treatment is being used in our public schools. Unfortunately, I'm almost certain it's not.
Posted by: Senor Pez at October 4, 2005 8:32 AMI notice YOU signed up for the college class. To bad that same freedom is being denied the students in this discussion.
I was raised a Christian. But I think it is disgusting that religion is taught in public schools. Perhaps the parents should arrange to be the teachers in after hour voluntary classes.
Celebration is another thing...we can all participate at schools, public offices, weddings, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation.
Posted by: Jack at December 13, 2005 2:46 PMI just don't understand USA ( I'm French-Canadian ) don't you ever think to really make a seperation between religion and state ( consequently education ) ?
I mean, do you know what 'laic' really means ? By you, I mean the politics.
I don't understand that people can stand that. Don't people realize their freedom of choice is not anymore when such decision are taken ??
But most of all, why do religion take such a place in politics in your country ? Don't you realise you are one of the nation with more problems than the rest of the world and that religion is one of the most powerfull lobby ?? Do you think it's normal ?? For a country that declare to be laic ??????
