Guess that explains the 9 miles per year / 130 feet per day of hair I've been tripping over.

It is a useful ability to be able to make plausible estimates with little exact data but common knowledge. The writer of this drivel would be well to practice this. For example hair grows around 1 mm/day (to within an order of magnitude or less). About 30 meters is rather less than 690 miles.
